5. The name was derived from Christ, who in the reign of Tiberius suffered under
Pontius Pilate, the procurator of Judea. By that event the sect of which he was the
founder received a blow which for a time checked the growth of a dangerous
superstition; but it revived soon after, and spread with recruited vigor not only in
Judea, the soil which gave it birth, but even in the city of Rome, the common sink
into which everything infamous and abominable flows like a torrent from all

*Tacitus- Roman Senator 56-120 AD
Wrote of Roman History during the reign of Tiberius,
Claudius and Nero and during the 69 AD reign of four
emperors. His writings cover from the death of Augustus
in 14 AD to the War with the Jews in 70 AD.

intercourse with all Greece and the shores of the
Mediterranean, many Greeks and inhabitants of Asia and
Syria, who had become obedient to the gospel under the
preaching of Paul, or those who worked with him, seem to
have made a concerted movement to go to Rome and preach
the gospel to this capital city of the world.

deaths in Rome under the reign of Nero
• At the conclusion of 3rd missionary journey, Paul is
arrested in Jerusalem and appeals to Caesar thus is
taken to Rome.

teachings of Jesus
• But the scriptures teach gospel is very specific to
the testimony of the apostles.
