Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.

Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
1. Once upon a time, there
were eight extraordinary
lives in the kingdom of
Northumbria.
2. They lived an ordinary
life until they were
called by the High
King.
3. The first one is Feliza, a dance goddess. She has
always been brave and loveable so the High King
gave her a pearl red ballet shoes and a dove as
her emblem. She was assigned as the Royal
Entertainer.
4. The second is the royal daughter of the Duke.
She is Jahaziel. The High King gave her a phlox-
colored pendant and a flamingo as her emblem.
Elegance and sophistication were her assets.
5. The third lass is a pen master. Her name is
Adrienne. She can move emotions through her
writings. After hearing her specialty, the High
King made her the Royal Chancellor. As a reward,
she was given a purple pen and a cat.
6. The fourth is a lass living on the hilltop.
She is Raquel. Her love for music
attracted the King that he made Raquel the
Royal Musician. A black harp and a penguin
were her treasures.
7. The only rose among the thorns was Robert. He is a
vagabond from a faraway kingdom. He worked as a
travelling healer and after he has gained the King’s
loyalty, he was invited to be the Royal Doctor. He

for his emblem.
8. Jnysz is a simple, caring, and happy damsel who in spite
of the world’s unkindness still sees the beauty of life.
She speaks with wisdom and precision. She is often seen
in the town library searching for the Lesson. The King,
having heard of her intelligence, made her the Royal

amber boat paddle and a dolphin.
9. The seventh is Pauline. The High King had chosen
her so that she might change the way she sees
herself. Pauline is beautiful, and charming but
reserved because she never saw how wonderful a swan
she is. The King gave her a horse and a sapphire ring
to convince her of being the Royal Peacemaker.

eagle to send her messages to people and an amethyst key
to a secret paradise.
