Nontraditional adult learners have various motivations for pursuing higher education such as career advancement, financial security, and personal goals. Their needs include programs with flexibility, online accessibility, and support from faculty and tutoring. Developing programs that meet the motivations and needs of adult learners is important for their success in completing degree programs. Such programs allow completion of online degrees and provide online access to libraries, tutoring, and faculty support seven days a week. Understanding adult learners' motivations and catering programs to their needs helps them attain college degrees.

Barbour, M. K., & Siko, J. (2012, April). A case study examining the perspectives of an at-risk, rural student enrolled in virtual schooling. A paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, Vancouver, BC. A large population of virtual schooling students are defined as “at-risk.” However, there is little research that focuses on the experiences of these students. This case study, based on interviews and video observations of an at-risk, rural student enrolled in an online course, brings light to some of these experiences. The student was good at prioritizing, often took the path of least resistance to achieve the minimum level of expectations, and demonstrated waning productivity during class. The student was also able to clearly express his thoughts on what was needed to succeed in an online course. As more rural students have to learn online, it is important to better understand how to design, deliver and support virtual schooling.

This presentation investigates the characteristics of an online graduate degree program in library and information studies (LIS), and its unusual success in retaining students to degree conferral. It has been reported for more than a dozen years that attrition rates for distance education programs are higher than for those programs in which instruction is delivered face to face. In the present study an online master's degree program in LIS that has maintained an overall retention rate higher than 90 percent over five successive entering classes is examined for explanatory characteristics. These characteristics are described and compared with attributes that the literature relates to retention success. Mapping the characteristics of our LIS program to the factors for retention requires description of specific implementations of the program design. We detail the factors and activities recommended for student retention and provide a summary of the activities inherent in the implementation our successful LIS program. Additional question for investigation are identified.

A study of virtual school students in Newfoundland and Labrador found that during synchronous sessions students tended to stay on task, relying more on each other than teachers for help. During asynchronous time, students only worked effectively about half the time and often collaborated. Students primarily sought help from peers and teachers, regardless of other available resources.

NONTRADITIONAL ADULT LEARNERS • Motivations • Adult learners have a variety of motivations when attending a college that aid in their success in learning because they have freedom in choosing higher education goals (Neagu, 2016). • Security such as money, balance, and house are the most common motivations for women while career and social status are the most common motivations for men (Neagu, 2016). • Needs • A college that can develop programs to meet the needs of nontraditional adult learners is a major factor in ensuring that these students are successful in completing their programs of study (Stevens, 2014). • Programs

PROGRAMS - 4 • Online degree programs • Online library and tutoring • Support from faculty • Flexibility in completing assignments In order to meet the needs of adult learners, programs must be created and implemented with online accessibility seven days a week and twenty-four hours a day to coursework, library, tutoring, and faculty. Degree programs must be able to be completed online.
