Introduction:
 Over the past three years there has been a
decline in enrollment in Liberal Arts courses
at IUPUI both in credit hours and head count.
IUPUI
Purpose
Research has shown that High Impact
Teaching Practices (HIPs) when done
well contribute to student success and
learning (Kuh2008). In an effort to
increase recruitment and retention in
the School of Liberal Arts; where there
was a steady decline in enrollment, I
created the first Residential Based
Learning Community (RBLC) in 2017.

Methodology
• The primary methodology
for this project consists of
Student Information System,
Institutional Research and
Decision Support, end-of-
year surveys, and scholarly
articles done by experts in
the field.
• Quantitative and qualitative
data was extensively used as
well. It will include sources
such as GroupMe
testimonials and attendance

A Sense of Belonging on Campus
• According to 2018 End of First Semester
Survey Report; 86% of respondents agreed
that the IUPUI campus community has made
them feel welcome.
• 83% of respondents agreed that they feel a
sense of belonging to IUPUI.
• 67% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported
feeling more part of the IUPUI community
and the School of Liberal Arts (End-of-year
survey)
• 73% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported
feeling a sense of belonging on campus.

Staff, Alumni and Employers
• 80% of Liberal Arts RBLC students said they
were able to make friends and connect with other
students pursuing similar majors (End-of-year
survey)
• 73% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported they
were able to connect with faculty in Liberal Arts
• 67% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported that
they were able to connect with staff members in
the School of Liberal Arts
• 47% Liberal Art RBLC students reported that they
were able to network and meet alumni/employers
in the Indianapolis community as a result of living

• 47% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported attending 1-3
RBLC and 27% reported attending 4-6 RBLC events.
• 73% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported they were
able to learn about and get engaged in Liberal Arts
student organizations.
• 67% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported they were to
learn about and get engaged in organizations on
campus outside of the School of Liberal Arts.
• 60% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported feeling
more deeply connected to the Indianapolis community
as actively engaged citizens.
• 27% reported volunteering with one or more community
service events, participating in an Alternative Break trip,
and/or volunteering at a non-profit agency since being in
the RBLC.

1. Conduct focus groups with Liberal Arts RBLC students
2. Partner with the Mentor Collective program to provide a robust
mentorship program involving alumni
3. Explore opportunities for more faculty to get involved in the RBLC
4. Explore more ways to connect our Liberal Arts student ambassadors;
Student Council, and the RBLC students
5. Opportunity for a Connected course (TLC) and or require all students
to participate in the “Multicultural Leadership Empowerment Program”

  • 3. IUPUI Introduction:  Over the past three years there has been a decline in enrollment in Liberal Arts courses at IUPUI both in credit hours and head count.
  • 4. IUPUI Purpose Research has shown that High Impact Teaching Practices (HIPs) when done well contribute to student success and learning (Kuh2008). In an effort to increase recruitment and retention in the School of Liberal Arts; where there was a steady decline in enrollment, I created the first Residential Based Learning Community (RBLC) in 2017. IUPUI Methodology • The primary methodology for this project consists of Student Information System, Institutional Research and Decision Support, end-of- year surveys, and scholarly articles done by experts in the field. • Quantitative and qualitative data was extensively used as well. IUPUI A Sense of Belonging on Campus • According to 2018 End of First Semester Survey Report; 86% of respondents agreed that the IUPUI campus community has made them feel welcome. • 83% of respondents agreed that they feel a sense of belonging to IUPUI. • 67% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported feeling more part of the IUPUI community and the School of Liberal Arts (End-of-year survey) • 73% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported feeling a sense of belonging on campus. IUPUI Connectedness with Friends, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Employers • 80% of Liberal Arts RBLC students said they were able to make friends and connect with other students pursuing similar majors (End-of-year survey) • 73% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported they were able to connect with faculty in Liberal Arts • 67% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported that they were able to connect with staff members in the School of Liberal Arts • 47% Liberal Art RBLC students reported that they were able to network and meet alumni/employers in the Indianapolis community as a result of living in the Liberal Arts RBLC. IUPUI Engagement • 47% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported attending 1-3 RBLC and 27% reported attending 4-6 RBLC events. • 73% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported they were able to learn about and get engaged in Liberal Arts student organizations. • 67% of Liberal Art RBLC students reported they were to learn about and get engaged in organizations on campus outside of the School of Liberal Arts. • 60% of Liberal Arts RBLC students reported feeling more deeply connected to the Indianapolis community as actively engaged citizens. • 27% reported volunteering with one or more community service events, participating in an Alternative Break trip, and/or volunteering at a non-profit agency since being in the RBLC.   • 16. IUPUI Next Steps 1. Conduct focus groups with Liberal Arts RBLC students 2. Partner with the Mentor Collective program to provide a robust mentorship program involving alumni 3. Explore opportunities for more faculty to get involved in the RBLC 4. Explore more ways to connect our Liberal Arts student ambassadors; Student Council, and the RBLC students 5. Opportunity for a Connected course (TLC) and or require all students to participate in the “Multicultural Leadership Empowerment Program”
