SEASON'S RECORD TEMPERATURE.
MENINDIE, 118.
The complete returns received yesterday by
the officials of the Weather Bureau show that
many extraordinary temperatures were
registered
in the inland districts on Thursday. At
Menindie the maximum shade reading was 118
agrees the highest temperature recorded during
the present summer in any portion of the
State. The heat just experienced, however,
was by no means unprecedented, for in January,
1877, Bourke reported a reading of 127
degrees-the highest temperature ever
registered
in the history of New South Wales.

Yesterday there was a general drop in
temperatures,
although great heat still
prevailed
in portions of the interior. In the city the
maximum shade reading was only 76.9, as compared
with 90.1 on Wednesday. Among the
inland registrations yesterday were

Light rain was falling last night at Barrenjoey,
Wollongong, and Ulladulla, and hazy conditions
ruled on the coast north of Sydney. A
few scattered showers are expected on the sea-
board to-day, with thunder in the north.
HOWRAV1LI.1'.-In some places the thermometer on
Thursday reached 110 degrees in the shade.
GRAFTON.-The temperature on Friday was
degrees in the shade.
MANILLA. 107 degrees were registered on Thursday,
and 100 degrees on Friday.
WOLLONGONG At 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon
steady, shaking rain set in from the south, and continued
all the afternoon, with every appearance of a
heavy downfall. If the rain continues it will be a
valuable new year's gift to the farmers on the coast,
who are almost on the verge of ruination.
HltlSBANH.-Tlio temperature at Brisbane
Friday. reached 90 degrees. At Warwick it went
up
to 107 degrees, which is a record.

PERTH (W.A.) The thermometer dropped to 82
degrees on Friday.
