Sulfur can exist in various oxidation states in organic compounds and inorganic molecules. Common oxidation states of sulfur include -2 in sulfide, +2 in thiosulfate, +4 in sulfite, and +6 in sulfate. Fungi are mostly able to utilize sulfur compounds in their reduced states for metabolism.
