THE WEST AFRICAN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY
PROGRAMME ON ADOPTED COMMUNITIES AND
COLLEGES

1.2 OBJECTIVES
1.3 METHODOLOGY/IMPLEMENTATION
1.4 RESULTS/DISCUSSION
1.5 CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATIONS
1.6 BUDGET HIGHLIGHT
INTRODUCTION
Promotion of NIOMR’s innovations, with particular
reference to fish culture using plastic tanks, have
been carried out over the years through the
Research-Extension-Farmer-Input-System (REFILS)
as well as using the mass media and publications like
Extension Guides, Newsletters, Journals,
Conferences proceedings, Magazines, Bulletins,
Flyers and so on. However, the expected impacts of
technologies up-takes by target audiences have been
minimal.
Intro cont.
This phenomenon geared the
Agricultural Research Council of
Nigeria (ARCN) towards promotion of
technologies utilization through the use
of the ‘Adopted Communities and
Colleges Concept’ where technologies
are demonstrated and mini-kits
installed for practicals.
Intro cont.
The results were encouraging and
the project got the approval of the
World Bank as it is currently
implemented through the West
African Agricultural Productivity
Programme (WAAPP) for the
widespread of technology adoption
OBJECTIVES
The project is aimed at:
encouraging large scale adoption of improved technologies by
farmers up to 50% at the end of one year
Economic empowerment of resource poor farmers
 encouraging up to 50% of secondary school students offering
Agricultural Sciences in the Senior Secondary School
Examination
 improving students’ performances at the SSCE examination
and ultimately offer Agriculture related courses at the
University and become self-employed
 reducing unemployment in the country and provide food
security and improved standard of living of young graduates
and community youths.
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY
 Sensitization of the College staff and students on felt and latent needs
in their agricultural businesses and schools’ curriculum
 Participatory appraisal of technologies to be introduced to the college
 Group participation in the implementation of the programme
 provision of adequate sites for implementation of the programme by
the College
 Capacity building of community youths, Agric teachers and Students on
basic fish farming technologies
 Excursion to NIOMR and established demonstration Centre at
Magbon-Alade Community in Lagos state to experience the
functionality of the project.
 WAAPP/NIOMR provision of input like fish house, plastic tanks,
fingerlings and floating fish feeds
RESULTS/ACHIEVEMENTS
 Sensitization of the
Principal, Agricultural
Science Teachers and
students as well as
participatory appraisal of
the technologies
 Excursion to NIOMR’s
facility and Magbon-
Alade demonstration
Centre
CAPACITY BUILDING OF THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS OF BADORE
COLLEGE.
Theory on breeding in
progress
Identification of fry feeds
Group participation in implementation and building of the
fish house
Excavation of plot for fish
house
Agric teachers and
students watch as the
building commences
BULDING CONTINUES
Uncompleted block work  Partially installed plastic tanks
MISSING GAP
It is necessary to state here
that the fingerlings for
stocking at the College
plastic tanks could not be
stocked there due to
security and poaching
issues. The fish house and
store compartment have
not been completed. The
fingerlings are therefore
stocked at the Institute’s
demonstration ponds near
the college.
Stocked fish at NIOMR
demonstration centre at
Badore .
OTHER FARMS INTEGRATIONS
Some students have been
allotted some plots for
Yam farming as well as
maize
THE PROJECT IS IN SLOW
PROGRESS AS ACCESSING FUNDS
AND PROCEDURES ARE VERY
STRINGENT.
CHALLENGES
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The beneficiaries of the project are
eager for continuity and completion of
the fish house and subsequent stocking
of the tanks. It is recommended that
the other aspects of integrated fish
farming as practiced in Songhai and
elsewhere in Nigeria be effected
immediately.

INTRODUCTION Promotion of NIOMR’s innovations, with particular reference to fish culture using plastic tanks, have been carried out over the years through the Research-Extension-Farmer-Input-System (REFILS) as well as using the mass media and publications like Extension Guides, Newsletters, Journals, Conferences proceedings, Magazines, Bulletins, Flyers and so on. However, the expected impacts of technologies up-takes by target audiences have been minimal.
  • 4. Intro cont. This phenomenon geared the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) towards promotion of technologies utilization through the use of the ‘Adopted Communities and Colleges Concept’ where technologies are demonstrated and mini-kits installed for practicals.
  • 5. Intro cont. The results were encouraging and the project got the approval of the World Bank as it is currently implemented through the West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) for the widespread of technology adoption
  • 6. OBJECTIVES The project is aimed at: encouraging large scale adoption of improved technologies by farmers up to 50% at the end of one year Economic empowerment of resource poor farmers  encouraging up to 50% of secondary school students offering Agricultural Sciences in the Senior Secondary School Examination  improving students’ performances at the SSCE examination and ultimately offer Agriculture related courses at the University and become self-employed  reducing unemployment in the country and provide food security and improved standard of living of young graduates and community youths.
  • 7. IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY  Sensitization of the College staff and students on felt and latent needs in their agricultural businesses and schools’ curriculum  Participatory appraisal of technologies to be introduced to the college  Group participation in the implementation of the programme  provision of adequate sites for implementation of the programme by the College  Capacity building of community youths, Agric teachers and Students on basic fish farming technologies  Excursion to NIOMR and established demonstration Centre at Magbon-Alade Community in Lagos state to experience the functionality of the project.  WAAPP/NIOMR provision of input like fish house, plastic tanks, fingerlings and floating fish feeds
  • 8. RESULTS/ACHIEVEMENTS  Sensitization of the Principal, Agricultural Science Teachers and students as well as participatory appraisal of the technologies  Excursion to NIOMR’s facility and Magbon- Alade demonstration Centre
  • 9. CAPACITY BUILDING OF THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS OF BADORE COLLEGE. Theory on breeding in progress Identification of fry feeds

  • 11. BULDING CONTINUES Uncompleted block work  Partially installed plastic tanks
  • 12. MISSING GAP It is necessary to state here that the fingerlings for stocking at the College plastic tanks could not be stocked there due to security and poaching issues. The fish house and store compartment have not been completed. The fingerlings are therefore stocked at the Institute’s demonstration ponds near the college. Stocked fish at NIOMR demonstration centre at Badore .
  • 13. OTHER FARMS INTEGRATIONS Some students have been allotted some plots for Yam farming as well as maize
  • 14. THE PROJECT IS IN SLOW PROGRESS AS ACCESSING FUNDS AND PROCEDURES ARE VERY STRINGENT. CHALLENGES
  • 15. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS The beneficiaries of the project are eager for continuity and completion of the fish house and subsequent stocking of the tanks. It is recommended that the other aspects of integrated fish farming as practiced in Songhai and elsewhere in Nigeria be effected immediately.
