A Community Project For Aquaculture in Kenya

Moi University in Kenya has successfully used a participatory approach to promote sustainable aquaculture in the local community. Through collaborative projects, the university has provided training to farmers and government officials, conducted research on improving production methods using local resources, and established an experimental fish farm. By involving stakeholders and allowing farmers to test technologies on their own farms, the program has helped transform subsistence fish farming into profitable small businesses, improving food security, income, and adoption of best practices.

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish, and plants. Major types include marine/brackishwater aquaculture of ocean species and freshwater aquaculture of native river/lake species. India is one of the top producers and exporters of aquaculture globally, dominated by species like carp, shrimp, and shellfish. The country faces challenges to its exports like market access issues, food safety concerns, and environmental impacts. It is addressing these through regulation, certification, traceability programs, and promoting sustainability and value-addition. Future prospects include growing demand, recognition of aquaculture as an economic sector, and greater awareness of sustainability needs.

Results saw adoption of technologies, increased agricultural interest, and sales of fish and poultry. Gaps around water, power, and transportation were identified. Recommendations included expanding to junior high schools, timely funding, and improved monitoring and evaluation.

Five units were established focused on fish farming, poultry, cassava/maize, post-harvest, and communication. Activities included training workshops, constructing fish ponds, poultry and crop production, and working with adopted schools and villages. Results were increased adoption of technologies, vocational training opportunities, and sales of fish and poultry. Recommendations included starting activities earlier in secondary school, timely funding, and improved monitoring and evaluation to better achieve WAAPP's goals.
