This allows ships to turn off their diesel generators and instead use shoreside power, reducing emissions. NIDEC ASI's automation systems control the switching between the ship's power system and shoreside power supply. Large ships require 1-5 MW of electric power for onboard systems while in port.

2. Shore Connection Technologies
The NIDEC ASI dream is to develop new technologies to reinforce freight links and ease
cargo flow between land and sea. The main shore connection’s concept is to transfer the
ship load to the shore plant and back without any blackout.
The automation system is fundamental to the whole process of allowing the ship’s power
requirement, supplied from its main diesel generators, to be switched
to the shore supply and back again.
Large container vessels, LNG tankers, ferries and cruise ships require vast quantities of
electric power (typically 1 to 5 MW and currents of over 300A) to support heating, air
conditioning and necessary auxiliary ship's systems.
