Mechanical services estimator (September 1988 – June 2007)
Franklin M & E Services, Chelmsford, Essex
The majority of my time with Franklin’s was spent as an estimator, pricing complex, high-tech projects
with values up to around £2,000,000.00. This involved the painstaking study of drawings and specifications
and the coordination of this information with various specialist sub-contractors, to build a competitive
tender and meet a tight deadline, whilst spotting and avoiding costly pitfalls. After this there was often a
negotiation phase with our clients and their representatives, where it was my role to make our offer look
attractive and convince them of our ability to produce a quality job on time. Once the contract was
secured I would pass the job on to a contracts manager, giving him all the information he would need to
begin the project, followed by all additional liaison required during the contract period. I also carried out
some hand draughting and CAD work over the years, and ran some smaller contracts with a good degree
of success. This involved the coordination of work with the main contractor, our sub-contractors and
other trades, negotiating prices and buying the correct materials and equipment at the best possible prices
with delivery at the correct time to suit the contract programme, as well as the organisation of our labour
on site to carry out the works in a timely manner.
Mechanical services estimator (June 2007 – November 2009)
ABS London, Paul Street, London
My time at ABS was spent working as a mechanical services estimator. The company mainly specialised in
office fit out work, mostly within the London area. I worked on the larger tenders, up to the value of
around £5,000,000.00, with the smaller works being priced by another. Towards the end of my time with
ABS they diversified, and the work that I priced became much more varied as a result. The negotiation
phase was usually carried out by a company director, which freed my time to concentrate on estimating. I
was made redundant from this post along with the rest of the estimating team when the company fell on
hard times, as part of an exercise to keep operating costs to a minimum.

Mechanical services estimator (January 2010 – January 2013)
Gratte Brothers, Regents Wharf, All Saints Street, London
Gratte Brothers are a large, very well established, well respected and very professional building services
provider, again operating mostly within the London area, although they do operate throughout this
country and abroad. I worked on tenders for diverse prestigious and ever more innovative and
environmentally conscious projects up to and potentially exceeding the value of £10,000,000.00, in the
commercial sector. When needed I played a part in the negotiation process, although this was mostly
taken care of by those at a managerial level, so as not to distract me from my everyday estimating duties.
Mechanical services estimator (January 2013 – present day)
Munro Building Services (South), Regina Road, Chelmsford, Essex
Munro Building Services are a long established building services provider operating from their historical
base in Cambridge. I work in their Chelmsford satellite office, which was set up a few years ago as part of
an expansion effort. The Chelmsford branch specialises in commercial and local authority projects, mainly
