WORK EXPERIENCE AND CAREER HISTORY
Job Title Employer Dates
Structural Engineering WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff 2016
I have completed a month placement in the Newcastle office as part of my degree. Whilst here I
used programmes such as Tedds and Tekla Structural Designer to help design Milburngate house
which WSP are currently working on. I also went to the site itself in Durham to visibly see what had
to be created in a structural sense, whilst also seeing their newly completed project, Freemans
Reach.
Civil Engineering Wates 2014
Work experience on their Haribo site in Wakefield. Whilst working here; I shadowed the site
manager, civil engineer, quantity surveyors and the project manager to get a feel of what different
roles people had on a large scale project such as this. I helped with drawing and checking the
engineering drawings as well as taking part in design briefs where I was encouraged to input if I had
any suggestions for the project. From this experience I learned that there is a lot more going on than
your specific role. It is important you think on a bigger scale in order to help your colleagues, as well
completing your responsibilities, to get the best possible end result.
2. Civil and Structural Engineering Laing O’Rourke 2012
During this experience I was working at the Trinity Shopping Centre project, Leeds. Here I gained an
understanding of the roles of civil and structural engineers. I noticed the importance and pressure of
a major employer and the professionalism which is needed. Whilst working here I shadowed the
project manager, the large steel roofing structure was being fitted whilst I was there. This had to be
designed perfectly for it to work due to the shape and size. I assisted in safety factor calculations for
this.
Civil Engineering Capital Construction 2011
Working with civil engineers involved in the construction of a new alcohol plant at Selby situated on
the former Tate and Lyle factory. I assisted in measuring sub structures and concrete form work for
the new processing unit as well as using the Leica total stations to map out new roads.
International Real Estate King Sturge (Now JLL) 2011
I have gained wider European work experience with a firm of international chartered surveyors in
their European offices. Although it was not specifically why I was there, it was interesting to see how
the design and construction needs to be altered to take into account tenant demand, climate and
local issues such as having to allow for earth quakes. This interested me hugely which is why I have
chosen ‘Seismic Resistant Design’ as my optional structures module during my masters year.

INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Volunteer work at Glastonbury Festival – I enjoy all types of music; this was a very enjoyable
experience for me. Volunteering enables you to help out as well as being able to listen to the music. I
have done this for the past 3 years.
Duke of Edinburgh – The main skills I gained during this were teamwork, time management,
leadership and organisational skills.
Skiing – I have been skiing since a very young age. On school ski trips, being one of the only ones
that could competently ski, I was able to assist in teaching people.
Other hobbies include playing golf and fitness.
