Guinea worm disease, also called dracunculiasis or dracontiasis, infection in humans caused by a parasite known as the guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis).
This disease needs early diagnosis, treatment and proper prevention.
preventative activity helps to control the disease.
2. Introduction
Started in 1984
It was run with the technical assistance of WHO
Now it is eradicated from 1996
In 2000 declared as
Dranculiasis eradicated India.
3. Dranculosis or Guinea worm disease caused by
nematode (one type of roundworm) parasite
dranculus medinesis.
It is the adult guinea worm length was 60-100cm.
4. Infection spread through skin and lower limbs
Causing swelling, ulceration and discomfort.
6. 1. Case detection and close surveillance
2. Vector control
3. GW case Management
4. Health education
5. Trained manpower development
6. Provision of safe drinking water
7. PREVENTION
Preventing transmission
from each worm by treatment
e.g. Antibiotic(Penicillin) etc..
Regular cleaning
Bandaging of affected areas
of skin until the worm is
completely expelled from the
body
8. PREVENTION
Surveillance to detect every human case and infected animal
within 24 hours of worm emergence,
Preventing contamination of drinking-water by preventing
infected people and infected animals (dogs and cats) with
emerging worms from wading into water;
9. Ensuring wider access to improved drinking-water
supplies to prevent infection
Filtering water from
open water bodies before drinking;
Implementing vector control by using the larvicide
Promoting health education and behavioral change.
