Kutumbsakhi is a non-profit organization established in 1977 to provide economic opportunities for women in India who were dependent on their husbands or faced exploitation. It was founded by Dr. Chandrakala to empower women through vocational training and jobs producing and delivering homemade food. Over two decades later, Kutumbsakhi continues operating food centers that provide stable incomes, benefits, and independence to women who now manage the organization themselves.

2. Introduction
 Kutumbsakhi organization started in the year
1977.
 This org. was established because it is seen
that women in villages and in some urban
areas are not allowed to work due to which
they are dependent on their husbands to run
the family.
 Women’s access to the labour market is more
difficult than men’s.
 In some cases women are exploited in their
workplaces.
 K.S is one such org. which is operating for the
past two decades. It provides food for BMC
schools.
 The name “Kutumbsakhi” was inspired by the
women’s working over there who at first were
dependent on their husbands and had ask for
money like beggars from them. But now they
are independent and comfortable working at
the org.
 Dr. Chandrakala was a sociologist professor in
S.N.D.T College who came up with the idea of
opening this org.

3. Historical Perspective
• On 8th Dec 1977, K.S came into
existence as a co-operative
industrial production centre
limited.
• Dr. Chandrakala had pioneered
this project.
• The results from the survey of 500
lower middle class people revealed
that the family starved from
poverty. The women were either
subjected to abuse by their drunk
husbands, some of them were
widows & some were abandoned
by family.
• Majority of the households had
single source of income.
• The women were unable to handle
needle work. So, they started
cooking & supplying food to
various places.

their products is more during
festivals as the food is
homemade food, cooked in
hygienic conditions, packed
properly & delivered to the door
steps of the people.There is

each centre.
