The 2006 Shell Creek Watershed Study tested water quality at 5 sites along Shell Creek and its tributaries in May, June, July, and August. Water quality was assessed using tests for dissolved oxygen, E. coli, pH, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature, phosphates, nitrates, turbidity, and total solids. The National Sanitation Foundation's Water Quality Index was then calculated for each site and indicated water quality ranging from medium to very bad depending on the site and sampling date. Overall, the study provided a comprehensive water quality analysis of the Shell Creek watershed over multiple seasons.
