Researchers collected water quality and biological data from 4 sites along Shell Creek to report to local watershed groups. Over multiple dates, they tested parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrates and macroinvertebrates. Results found low dissolved oxygen and macroinvertebrate diversity at some sites. High turbidity and sediment were also issues. The group aims to continue monitoring and expand tests to further assess water quality in the creek.

The final report from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection that finds, after several years of testing, no elevated levels of radiation from acid mine drainage coming from the Clyde Mine, flowing into Ten Mile Creek. Radical anti-drillers tried to smear the Marcellus industry with false claims of illegal wastewater dumping into the mine, with further claims of elevated radiation levels in the creek. After years of testing, the DEP found those allegations to be false.

Silage leachate is a high strength waste which contributes to surface and groundwater contamination of various pollutants from runoff, direct leaching through concrete storage structures, and infiltration of runoff. Feed storage is required for the majority of dairy operations in the country (which are expanding in size and fed storage requirements) leading to widespread potential contamination. Limited data on silage leachate quality and treatment has made management and regulation based solely on observation. This project investigated three bunker silage storage sites to assess the water quality characteristics of silage leachate and runoff from various feed sources and surrounding environmental factors. Surface samples were collected from feed storage structures and analyzed for numerous water quality parameters. Using collected hydrologic data, contaminant loading was analyzed for various storm events and assessed for first flush effects and potential to impact handling and treatment designs. Determination of first flush provides essential data for separation of waste streams (high and low strength) to ease management in terms of operation and cost, reduce loading to treatment systems, and reducing the overall environmental impact.
Hydrogen Peroxide- Review of its Role as Part of a Mine Drainage Treatment St...Michael Hewitt, GISP
Jon Smoyer P.G., PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), “Hydrogen Peroxide- Review of its Role as Part of a Mine Drainage Treatment Strategy”
Hydrogen Peroxide has been used to oxidize and remove ferrous iron from mine drainage for decades. It is a relatively inexpensive and effective oxidant that can be used to achieve rapid ferrous iron oxidation in many active and semi-passive mine drainage treatment systems. This presentation outlines the physical properties, concentrations, and available delivery options for hydrogen peroxide.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Stone, Courtney Bennett, Mike Voelker,
Aaron Hallgren, Instructor: Mark Seier
2. Mission
Collect data to report to the Shell Creek
Watershed Improvement Group and Nebraska
Wildlife Federation
Learn about the geography and location of the
Shell Creek and the area it involves
Become knowledgeable about water chemistry
parameters and their significance to the stream’s
inhabitants
Learn about biological stream factors and how
they indicate water quality
3. Procedures
A total of four sites were selected and latitude and
longitude were determined by using Global Positioning
System (GPS).
Sampling was done in two day sets. First day was chemical
testing
and the second was macroinvertebrate sampling.
Chemical tests run include: pH, water temperature,
turbidity, conductivity, velocity, nitrates, dissolved oxygen,
and oxygen saturation
Macroinvertebrate sampling was done using a D-net and
included 20, 1-foot square samples at each site.We also used
Hester-Dendy samplers. Fish were sampled using a seine.

•Low dissolved oxygen and % saturation rates
•High levels of turbidity
•High amounts of silt and sediment
•Low macroinvertebrate diversity
•Scoured banks at site 4
25. Suggestions for future studies:
• We would like to add the tests: fecal coliform,
biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphates, and
total solids; to calculate the overall water quality
index number.
• Continue to monitor same sites and add one or two
new locations
26. We would like to thank the Shell Creek
Watershed Improvement Group and the
Natural Resource District for providing us with
the testing materials.
We would also like to thank the landowners
who owned the area around the sites we tested
for their cooperation in this study: Paul
Cederlind, Fred Fehringer, and Katie Hallgren.
