WEEK 4: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Reaching Out, Building Relationships, and Making Connections
What does it mean to engage someone? It means reaching out and connecting with them. When you are
human and real to someone, when you are actively present and listening, you demonstrate respect. This is
the most effective way to receive respect in return. It’s also the first step toward building lasting relationships
that produce collaborative results in the business world. None of your colleagues will want to work with you
in the future if you do not engage them sincerely and openly.
As a leader, you own one hundred percent of your relationships. You don’t have the luxury of waiting for
other people to give you fifty percent of the relationship, to meet you halfway. If you want engaged
colleagues and collaborators, you must take responsibility for the relationship, giving it one hundred percent
and owning the accountability for it. If that relationship isn’t what you need it to be, if you’re not fully engaged
with that person, it’s not their responsibility. It is yours as a business leader.
Now, this does not mean that you are doing all the work. It doesn’t mean carrying around your less-than-
engaged coworkers, in the hope that they will eventually see the light, if you let them use and abuse you. It
does mean, however, that you must be fully committed to growing the relationship. If the other person won’t
make the effort, it doesn’t matter. You must take the steps needed to inspire them, to motivate them, and to
build a strong interaction with them.
Why is this important? As a leader, your success soars or fails based on the strength of your relationships
with your colleagues. These are your collaborators, the people best positioned to support your goals and
make them happen. People will engage with you, follow you, and be inspired by you, based on who you are,
not just what you do. Who they are and what they do isn’t your responsibility; you can only lead by example,
openly and generously. One way to do this is to develop and maintain empathy in all of your business
relationships.
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to see and feel what another person is experiencing from their perspective. Empathy,
in the business world, could be referred to as a soft skill. Cultivating empathy, however, is often one of the
most difficult tasks a leader faces, far more important to leadership than the technical skills that leader
already knows.

Communication is one of the key areas that drive the operations of an organization. My past employer engaged in unending communication with various audiences both within and outside the organization. The internal stakeholders with which the organization communicated included employees, managers, investors, the board of directors, and the owners. The external stakeholders, on the other hand, were the customers, suppliers, the government, and the community. All these groups needed constant and more frequent communication. However, the nature of communication directed towards the internal stakeholders came out as informative and motivational, while that with the external stakeholders was considerably persuasive.
The communication needs of the audiences with which my past employer communicated differed. For instance, communication was significantly persuasive and followed the launch of a new product or service when the audience was customers. In most cases, it was always necessary to include a convincing tenet in the communication needs of groups of external stakeholders. The communication needs of the internal stakeholders were to inform. As a result, such communication processes were often laced with facts intended to motivate these audiences, such as investors and the board of directors, for approval processes. It is important to note that these communication processes used to occur after the organization identified a communication opportunity and determined its purpose (Quintanilla & Wahl, 2020).

But how? The mystery of what leaders can and
ought to do in order to spark the best performance
from their people is age-old. In recent years, that
mystery has spawned an entire cottage industry:
literally thousands of "leadership experts" have
made careers of testing and coaching executives, all
in pursuit of creating businesspeople who can turn
bold objectives-be they strategic, financial, organi
zational, or all th re e -in to reality.
Still, effective leadership eludes many people and
organizations. One reason is that until recently, vir
tually no quantitative research has demonstrated

fer advice based on inference, experience,

But new research by the consulting firm Hay/

These changes often result in several complex health conditions dubbed geriatric syndromes. Most cells have a short life span and are easily regenerated and replaced by new cells in the human body. On the other hand, nerve cells are generated in vivo, have a longer life span, and are usually not replaced when they die or are destroyed.
Several changes occur in the central nervous system. Firstly, nerve cells and supporting neuroglia are gradually lost with age. On the other hand, the remaining cells function less efficiently, and there is an increased concentration of harmful materials such as free radicals and iron in the remaining brain tissue (Knight & Nigam, 2017). Secondly, there is a decrease in brain mass leading to decreased function of affected areas such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and motor cortex, manifesting as impairments in higher functions, memory loss, and gait. Thirdly, the ventricles increase in size and due to the loss of cells lining the ventricles. Fourthly, there is a decrease in cerebral blood flow and diminished integrity of the blood-brain barrier over time. There is also a decline in the production of neurotransmitters. Lastly, age-related changes to the vertebrae and intervertebral discs may increase pressure on the spinal cord and its branching nerve roots. This can slow down nerve impulses' conduction along motor neurons, contributing to reduced muscular strength (Manini et al., 2013).
There is a slowed nerve conduction in the peripheral nervous system attributed to decreased axonal length, loss of mitochondria, and degeneration of peripheral neurons' myelin sheath. This may result in decreased sensation, slower reflexes, and clumsiness. On top of that, damaged neurons are not repaired efficiently in older adults, and some are not repaired at all.
The decrease in brain function with aging may impair mental function seen in neurodegenerative conditions such as delirium and dementia. Delirium is defined as an acute confusional state characterized by an acute decline in attention-focus, perception, cognition, and consciousness. In contrast, dementia is an acquired global impairment of intellect, memory, and personality but without impaired consciousness.
The two conditions are similar in that they exhibit similarities in their presentation: impaired memory and judgment, confusion, disorientation, and varia.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
