This document summarizes a study on the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with peptic ulcer disease in Manipur, India. The study found a prevalence of H. pylori infection of 20% among 60 peptic ulcer patients, which is significantly lower than other studies in India. Positive H. pylori status was significantly associated with non-vegetarian diet and not taking anti-ulcer drugs in the past week. The study concludes that a rapid antibody test kit is a suitable, cheap, and reliable screening technique for H. pylori infection in peptic ulcer patients.
NON-STEROIDAL ANTI INFLAMMATORY DRUGS AND GASTROINTESTINAL TOXICITYApollo Hospitals
Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because of their high efficacy as both anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents, are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs world-wide. They are used in treatment of many commonly occurring disorders such as chronic arthropathies, headache and low back pain. Their widespread and uncontrolled use is promoted by their over the counter availability. This acts as a double edge sword. One of the most common adverse effects that add largely to its morbidity and mortality

Malnutrition and Tuberculosis chronic infectious disease are both problems of considerable magnitude in the most underdeveloped regions of the world. Malnutrition can leads to secondary immunodeficiency that increase the host susceptibility to infection. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching program on the knowledge and practice regarding dietary pattern among mothers of children with tuberculosis admitted in pediatric ward. Quasi experimental with two groups pre test post test design was used for 60 mothers at IPD and OPD of pediatric department and purposive sampling technique was used. Self structured questionnaire was used to assess knowledge and checklist for practice. In post test experimental group mothers have 63.3 average knowledge, 26.6 poor knowledge and 10 good knowledge while in the control group, 53.3 poor knowledge, 46.6 average knowledge and non hove good knowledge. In experimental group mean score was 17.9 1.96 while in control group mean score was 11.8 2.99. At the “p” value 0.05, the calculated t value 3.21 was compared with the tabulated value 2.01 . In post test experimental group, mothers have 53.3 good practice, 46.6 average practice and none have poor practice while in the control group, 63.33 average practice, 23.3 poor practice and 13.3 good practice. In experimental group mean score was 19.13 1.99 while in the control group, mean score was 14.06 2.85.At the “p” value 0.05, the calculated t value 3.28 was compared with the tabulated value 2.01 . These finding reveals that the planned teaching program on dietary pattern was effective. Background: The incidence of abdominal tuberculosis is increasing. Preoperative diagnosis continues to
be the biggest challenge. Diagnosis is established only after histopathological examination. The modes of presentation
and therapeutic options need to be assessed. Objectives: To study the patterns of presentations, the extent of organ
involvement and therapeutic options. Materials and methods: Fifty histopathologically proven cases of abdominal
tuberculosis were studied. In addition, epidemiologic data, clinical patterns of presentation, diagnostic and various
surgical options, including outcomes, were studied. Results: The mortality in the study was 8%. The disease was
commonly seen in 21 to 40 years old and commonly seen in females. HIV positivity, anaemia and hypoproteinaemia
were associated with poor outcomes. Four types of presentations were observed. Diagnostic laparoscopy enabled early
histopathological diagnosis of biopsy specimens. Chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment Surgery is a significant
adjunct in diagnosing and managing complications. Patients presenting with perforative peritonitis had a poor prognosis
Conclusion: Critical evaluation of chronic abdominal pain is essential. Supportive evidence such as the history of TB or
contact with a patient suffering from TB is highly suggestive of abdominal tuberculosis. Radiological tests are highly
suggestive but not diagnostic. Diagnostic laparoscopy enables tissue diagnosis. Chemotherapy accompanied by surgical
intervention for complications is the mainstay of treatment.

— Female genital tuberculosis is one of the major etiological factors of female infertility. Diagnosis of genital tuberculosis is very important in such cases. So this comparative observational type of study was carried out on infertile women to compare the diagnostic effectively of ultrasonograpgy (USG), genital tuberculosis, Tuberculin test, Nucleic acid amplification test (PCR), histopathology and hysteroscopy & laparoscopy (DHL) assuming culture as gold standard. It was observed that the 28% of infertile cases were found positive for genital tuberculosis on culture. Sensitivity of PCR 64.28%, DHL 92.85%, USG 42.85%, Histopathology 60.71% and Tuberculin Test 64.28%. So sensitivity was found with significant variation ranging from 42.85% with ultrasonography (USG) to 92.85% with DHL. Specificity of PCR 52.77%, DHL 55.55%, USG 98.61%, Histopathology 91.66% and Tuberculin Test 36.11%. So specificity was also found with significant variation being found maximum with USG (98.61%) and minimum with tuberculin test (36.11%). Positive predictive value (PPV) was found maximum (92.3%) with USG and minimum (28.12%) with tuberculin test and negative predictive value (NPV) was found maximum (95.23%) with DHL and minimum (72.22%) with tuberculin test. Diagnostic effectively of diagnosing GTB with various studied modalities vary with significant variation.

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

infection and variables like age, sex,
occupation, diet, drugs and symptoms
4. Materials and Methods:
Cross
sectional study
A hospital based study, RIMS, Imphal,
Manipur
Duration: Oct’ 2011- Nov’ 2012
Study population : PUD patients with
dyspeptic symptoms,
blotting,
epigastric pain,
GERD,
indication for endoscopy & referral to
surgical gastroenterology for MAS.
5.
Exclusion criteria:
Pts with any organic diseases
H/o alcoholism
Use of steroids / NSAID
H/o H2 blockers
Proton pump inhibitors
Antibiotics intake 1week prior to study
Age < 18 years
60 cases of PUD taken up in the study.
6. Study tools:
(SD – BIOLINE) H. pylori test kit is used

Haryana, India.
20 µl of whole blood is added to sample well,
3 drops of assay diluents added and test
results interpreted at 10 minutes
7. Limitation of the test :
A negative result does not preclude the
possibility of infection with H. pylori.
2. As with all diagnostic tests, a definitive
clinical diagnosis should not be based on the
result of a single test but should only be
made by the physician after all clinical and
laboratory findings have been evaluated.

16. Discussion :
60
cases of PUD have been screened.
12 cases have been detected positive for H. pylori.
(Mean age SD) is 41.61 14.97
The prevalence of H. pylori is significantly low (20%)
as compared to study by V. Kate et al (87%) in
Chennai and by GH. Jeelani et al (76%) in highly
endemic Kashmir.
However, eradication of H. pylori is still strongly
suggested for the positive cases. Awareness program
to be carried out to the public at all levels.
Weel.J.F.L, et al reported that different virulent and
non virulent strains of H. pylori exist and that only
virulent strains of H. pylori are ulcerogenic.
17. Conclusion :
The
prevalence of H. pylori - 20%
The positivity may be due to sedentary life,
abstaining anti ulcer drugs, dietary habits,
socio-economic status and environment.
The advantageous aspect is the simplicity of
the rapid antibody test kit technique, using
whole blood which is cheap, reliable and
accurate with spot diagnosis at bedside as the
screening test of choice.
