Saudi Arabia is looking to increase electricity prices and cut subsidies to drive demand for renewable energy like solar, following Dubai's lead. Experts say electricity prices in Saudi Arabia would need to increase by over 50% to support the growth of renewables. Dubai has been successful in fostering local solar energy demand through high electricity prices and large solar projects. Saudi Arabia has begun modestly increasing power bills but they remain below Dubai's rates. The country also plans to build its first large-scale solar plant as part of economic reforms away from oil dependence.

Kuwait signed a contract to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to meet its energy needs through 2014. This will help satisfy rising air conditioning demand in Kuwait's hot summers. Kuwait began LNG imports in 2009 and typically signs deals with suppliers like Shell to provide LNG during peak summer demand. ROC Oil Company and Horizon Oil announced an all-scrip merger that would create an Asian-focused energy company with combined production of 5.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per year, net reserves of 36.9 million barrels, and net contingent resources of 120.7 million barrels. The merger is supported by both companies' boards and would position the combined company for growth in Asia.

1) ADNOC, the Abu Dhabi state oil company, is in advanced talks to sell minority stakes in its refining business to strategic partners like ENI and OMV. This would allow ADNOC to bring in capital and expertise without having a dominant partner.
2) Some Gulf states are increasing their use of coal for power generation as it is seen as a more cost-competitive alternative to natural gas. However, this transition raises concerns about its implications for climate change.
3) Oman is planning its first coal-fired power plant, a 1,200 MW project in Duqm, as it moves to diversify its energy mix away from natural gas dominance.

Norway's $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund has proposed selling off nearly $35 billion in oil and gas stocks from its portfolio. This would be the largest divestment from fossil fuels to date. The fund currently owns about 1.5% of global stocks. If it sells its oil and gas holdings, it would add significant momentum to the fossil fuel divestment movement. However, Norway's economy relies heavily on oil and gas production, so the proposed change aims more to diversify risk than address climate change. Still, environmental activists see it as a major step that could increase pressure on oil companies facing challenges from renewable energy growth.
Saudi Arabia's Sabic has received approval to export liquefied natural gas from the US to the UK. Sabic plans to invest in US shale gas and is converting a plant in England to process US shale gas. Kuwait's KNPC plans to invest $40 billion by 2022 on projects including a new refinery and clean fuels project. Global energy demand is projected to rise 37% by 2040, with growth concentrated in Asia, Africa, and Latin America rather than developed nations. GCC petrochemical revenues hit $89.4 billion in 2013, a 7.3% increase from 2012. Saudi Aramco plans to nearly double the capacity of a planned gas plant in Fadhili to 2.5

The document discusses several topics related to water, energy, and business in the Middle East region:
1) Middle East and North African governments are expected to spend $300 billion on water and desalination projects by 2022 to address water challenges in the largely arid region.
2) The 6th International District Energy Association conference in Dubai will address developing sustainable cooling solutions and preserving water resources used for district cooling.
3) A UN official praised the UAE's efforts to transition to a green economy through initiatives like Expo 2020 and Masdar City and targets to increase renewable energy use.
Kuwait plans to spend $155 billion on 523 projects over the next 5 years despite low oil prices. Kuwait has substantial sovereign wealth and future generations funds to draw from. Officials warned that lower oil prices could lead to Kuwait's first budget deficit next fiscal year unless prices rise. The World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi will showcase growing investment opportunities in renewable energy across the Middle East and North Africa. Saudi Arabia and Venezuela discussed bilateral ties and global oil market developments, as low prices strain Venezuela's budget. Saudi Arabia is investing $28 billion in new petrochemical plants this year to diversify its economy away from oil.
New base energy news 04 febuary 2019 issue no 1229 by khaled al awadiKhaled Al Awadi
- Oil prices rose to their highest levels of 2019 on tighter supply from OPEC cuts and US sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry. The US has imposed new sanctions on Venezuela that will limit oil transactions, similar to sanctions on Iran.
- OPEC oil supply fell in January by the largest amount in two years, while Russian output missed targets for cuts. US oil rig counts have also fallen, indicating slower production growth from shale.
- Analysts expect supply to tighten further as Venezuela's output could be cut by 0.5-1% of global supply due to US sanctions. Higher oil prices are squeezing refining margins in Asia to their lowest since 2010.

Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio ProblemMajid Iqbal
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
Optimizing Net Interest Margin (NIM) in the Financial Sector (With Examples).pdfshruti1menon2
NIM is calculated as the difference between interest income earned and interest expenses paid, divided by interest-earning assets.
Importance: NIM serves as a critical measure of a financial institution's profitability and operational efficiency. It reflects how effectively the institution is utilizing its interest-earning assets to generate income while managing interest costs.
OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
Vicinity Jobs’ data includes more than three million 2023 OJPs and thousands of skills. Most skills appear in less than 0.02% of job postings, so most postings rely on a small subset of commonly used terms, like teamwork.
Laura Adkins-Hackett, Economist, LMIC, and Sukriti Trehan, Data Scientist, LMIC, presented their research exploring trends in the skills listed in OJPs to develop a deeper understanding of in-demand skills. This research project uses pointwise mutual information and other methods to extract more information about common skills from the relationships between skills, occupations and regions.
