Humans Aren’t Computers: Effective Management Strategies for IT LeadersMichele Chubirka
IT leaders are expected to break down silos between different technology teams, get end users to understand and embrace policies, and forge productive relationships with their counterparts on the business side of the organization. This is harder than it sounds, because while people can behave rationally, they can also be governed by emotions such as frustration and fear of change. They can be driven by ego, a bad attitude, or simple ignorance. They can cause conflict that can disrupt professional relationships, drag down a team or even poison an entire department. Unfortunately for technical-minded leaders, there’s no Python script to program company-wide collaboration and harmony and get everyone to sing Kumbaya. We have to learn how to build healthy relationships with employees, drive engagement, and understand how to resolve conflicts using practical, effective strategies.

Health Education on prevention of hypertensionRadhika kulvi
Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The
2. What is Microdosing?
In recent years the concept of Microdosing
psychedelics has become increasingly
recognized. Microdosing refers to the act of
taking tiny portions of a psychedelic
substance. The practice of microdosing
can be done using various substances such
as; Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD),
Psilocybin (“magic” mushrooms), Cannabis,
etc.
While there are limited scientific studies
done on the effects microdosing can have,
there are countless anecdotal studies that
prove how microdosing can have a positive
impact on users.
3. Benefits of
Microdosing
While microdosing is still an unfamiliar concept to
many, there is no doubt that it is gaining some
traction, especially in recent years. From the early
research done by psychologist James Fadiman, to
more recent anecdotal studies; there is enough
evidence to show that microdosers do experience
positive results and benefits from microdosing.
While there are many potential benefits of
microdosing, here are three that are the most
prevalent and consistent throughout each study:
Benefits may vary depending on which psychedelic
a user is taking and how much they are
microdosing with. Overall benefits include:
● Better Focus
● Higher Levels of Creativity
● Relief From Depression
● More energy
● Lessens Anxiety
● Emotional Openness
● Relief From Menstrual Pain
● Heightened Spiritual Awareness
4. Reduces Symptoms of Mental Illnesses
While it’s certainly an oversimplification, people
generally microdose for two different reasons: to
decrease the frequency and intensity of undesirable
mental states, or to improve the frequency and intensity
of desirable mental states.
According to research, more than 6.7 million people are
living with a mental health condition in Canada.
Microdosing can aid in reducing the frequency and
intensity of undesirable states caused by various forms
of mental illness, including anxiety (generalized or
social), depression, ADD/ADHD, etc.
Microdosing can also increase certain desirable states,
such as, feelings of high energy, being productive, and
improved relationships/increased empathy.
5. Boosts Creativity,
Energy, and
Productivity
Various microdosing users have stated an elevated desire to
indulge in creative activities. Artists such as Yoko Ono and
Adrian Piper created their most successful pieces of art
while microdosing.
In 2018, ‘The Conversation’ came out with an article called
“‘Microdosers’ of LSD and magic mushrooms are wiser and
more creative”. This article covered details of their recent
study where they questioned individuals who microdose
regularly compared to those who do not. Their survey
revealed that microdosers scored higher on wisdom, open-
mindedness, and creativity.
In 2016, Wired came out with an article where they
interviewed young professionals located in San Francisco
and Silicon Valley. These young professionals spoke on their
experience with microdosing, and specifically how it
changed their work ethic. They found that by taking a small
amount of LSD every few days, they were able to stay
productive and energetic throughout their workday. They
strongly believe that it is optimizing their mental prowess.
6. Overall Physical & Spiritual Health
Many microdosers report that in addition to
the increased energy levels, they also found
themselves to be more health conscious.
Studies show that some users experience an
increase in stamina and a newfound love of
healthier food options. Microdosing has also
been known to help users fall asleep quicker
and wake up feeling refreshed.
Microdosing has a large effect on your
spiritual health as well as physical.
Microdosers will often feel a closer
connection with those around them and
allows them to get a better understanding of
their own self-worth.
7. How Much is a
Microdose?
The portion size of a microdose can vary
from 1/10 to 1/20 of a normal dose. This
will allow the user to feel the positive
benefits gained from these substances such
as increased energy and creativity, without
any extreme negative feelings such as
hallucinations and sensory shifts.
How Often Should I Microdose?
Now that you know what microdosing is and
how much you should take, you’re probably
wondering how often to take it!
Check out this helpful graphic that is based
on the four-day schedule created by
Dr.Fadiman.
8. SCIENCE OF MICRODOSING
While psychedelic substances have been
illegal and prohibited from study in the vast
majority of countries up until the past few
years, many of the world’s top experts have
made incredible strides picking up on
research started in the 1950s and 60s.
Much of what we understand about how
psychedelics work involves serotonin, a
chemical that keeps our brains ticking. It is
one of the most important neurotransmitters
in the brain, and affects nearly everything we
do, from how we feel to how we process
information.
9. Psychedelic Therapy Classic psychedelics such as LSD and
Psilocybin share a similar structure to
serotonin, and work along a similar
pathway…
Many antidepressants (called Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs)
try to make serotonin more plentiful in
the brain to make you feel better.
Psychedelics work more directly, by
mimicking serotonin. This means that
one of their main effects is to stimulate a
serotonin receptor, located in the
prefrontal cortex, called “5-HT2A.”
10. The stimulation of the 5-HT2A receptor leads to two very
important results:
The production of “Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor”
(BDNF). BDNF is “like Miracle-Gro for your brain. It
stimulates growth, connections, and activity.” [1]
The increased transmission of “Glutamate.” Glutamate is
the neurotransmitter most responsible for brain functions
like cognition, learning, and memory. [2]
Participants in microdosing research consistently report
improvements to cognition and mood, and multiple
studies have found that microdosers experience
increases in creativity. A 2019 systematic study of
microdosing found that it led to longer-term improved
mental health and improved concentration. Interestingly
this same study found that microdosers’ expectations
didn’t alter their experiences, suggesting the benefits of
microdosing aren’t just a placebo effect.
11. Like full doses, microdoses of
psychedelics appear to encourage
neuron growth, so we can expect
future research to branch out into
investigating new treatments for
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Recent research also indicates that low
doses of LSD can reduce perceptions
of discomfort, suggesting the potential
for a whole new approach to pain
relief.
12. 1P-LSD vs LSD
1P-LSD is subjectively similar to LSD, with
many users finding the effects to be
practically identical. Chemically, the difference
between the two is that 1P-LSD has a small
propionyl group bonded to the 1-position of
LSD’s indole ring. [5]
4-ACO-DMT vs Psilocybin
Psilocybin and 4-ACO-DMT have very similar
effects and share similar chemical structures.
The effects of 4-ACO-DMT lasts slightly longer
(up to 7 hours) than that of psilocybin (4-6
hours). Both psilocybin and 4-ACO-DMT are
converted into psilocin in your body after
being ingested.
13. Default Mode
Network
Psychedelics allow parts of the brain that might not usually
communicate with one another… to communicate with one
another!
Psychedelics allow these unique connections to be formed
by dampening the activity of an often over-used part of our
brain called the “Default Mode Network” (DMN).
● Creativity,
● Neuroplasticity,
● Presence
The Default Mode Network is an area of the brain used for
an array of different mental activities, including day-
dreaming, self-reflection, and thinking about the past or the
future. Some studies suggest that depression is linked to an
overactive DMN. [8] It’s possible that a highly active DMN
causes us to ruminate, over-analyze ourselves, and step out
of the present moment to constantly question the past and
the future.
This helps explain why these substances could be used to
combat depression and anxiety, and lead to insights and
creative perspectives that otherwise remain inaccessible to
us.
14. Microdosing for Your Mental Health
According to research, 1 in 5
people in Canada will personally
experience a mental health
problem or illness. With mental
health issues becoming
increasingly more prevalent across
the world – it is understandable
that methods of treatment would
also become more known and
utilized. In fact, more than 20
million antidepressants were
prescribed between October and
December 2020.
15. Increase in Creativity
and Energy
Unfortunately, people who suffer from
mental health issues often claim that they
are no longer interested in activities and
hobbies that previously brought them joy.
This can be very unfortunate as the lack of
interest can worsen a depressive state and
make these individuals feel empty and
hopeless.
A very common benefit of microdosing is
that it provides a jolt of energy and an
increase in creativity. This allows
microdosers to regain interest in their
hobbies and they may even feel inclined to
try out new activities that they didn’t have
the confidence or motivation to participate
in before.
