1. E-learning/Online Learning Been happening for over 20 years Wholly online vs. hybrid courses Formal degrees and personal development Distance Learning: How Far Have We Come? Adam Bishop
2. Do people like learning online? Studies have shown there is not a significant difference in terms of achievement and satisfaction levels of students when it comes to taking classes online vs. taking classes in person. Advantages include: go to class when you want, attend a class from a distance, asynchronous…what else? What about frustrations?
3. Study Frustration can be a major obstacle for distance learning 3 parts to study 1. online discussion was observed -nature of discussion - instructor’s facilitation -comments to students - tasks assigned
4. Study 2. Observed how students interact with website -4/6 students observed while 6/6 were interviewed after tasks were completed 3. Examined documents in course -syllabus -readings -catalog’s course description
5. Problems Technological problems -some students not as experienced -knowing how things operate Communication problems -people wouldn’t read other students’ posts or too many posts to read, falling behind on other assignments No physical existence/no immediate feedback -send email “I agree!” vs. just a head nod Ambiguous instructions via email (asynchronous)
