NFV and SDN will drive a deeper evolution of network architecture beyond just virtualizing functions. While cost savings can be achieved through NFV and SDN, the main benefits will be increased flexibility and agility to adapt to changing usage models and revenue goals. The transition will be gradual due to risks, but virtualization will fundamentally change how operators plan, deploy, test, monitor and expand networks. NFV and SDN will also complete the transition to fully open IP infrastructures, reducing mobile network exceptionalism as wireless traffic increases substantially.
The document discusses how future networking is being impacted by cloud/hybrid IT, software-defined networking, and network functions virtualization. Specifically:
1) The emergence of public cloud and hybrid IT models is driving more traffic to data centers and changing expectations around network flexibility and costs.
2) Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) solutions allow businesses more control over their networks by using overlays to connect sites over multiple networks like broadband internet and MPLS.
3) Network functions virtualization (NFV) enables network functions to be deployed as software, increasing flexibility and reducing costs compared to hardware appliances.
Comcast offers Ethernet solutions for businesses that provide reliable, secure, and scalable connectivity. Their Ethernet services include private line, virtual private line, network, and dedicated internet services that allow businesses to connect multiple sites from 1Mbps to 10Gbps. Comcast touts their large fiber network spanning 39 states and over 141,000 miles of fiber as well as dedicated support as benefits of their Ethernet services.
This document discusses solutions for cost-effective data transfer between locations at broadband speeds. Wired fiber optic solutions can be costly and inflexible, while wireless broadband has emerged as a lower-cost alternative that can match or exceed reliability. Standards like IEEE 802.11 and 802.16 (WiFi and WiMAX) promise high data rates over large areas for many users. These wireless solutions can provide broadband access in rural areas currently without connectivity. Seamless vertical handoff between heterogeneous wireless networks is needed for true global mobility, but existing frameworks do not provide practical solutions; the proposed "End-to-End Vertical Handoff" concept offers a novel design to continuously monitor network availability and select the best network. Simulations
Mobile data usage is growing exponentially, increasing pressure on mobile networks. As a result, mobile operators are looking for more cost-effective backhaul solutions using ethernet, wavelengths, and dark fibre. Colt has experience providing metro fibre backhaul services in European cities using their fibre assets and relationships with landlords. Their solution aims to improve network capabilities and reduce costs for mobile operators by sharing fibre connectivity between cell sites rather than point-to-point connections. Colt's extensive fibre network and experience in 28 countries positions them to provide scalable, flexible, and future-proof mobile backhaul solutions.
The document discusses the evolution of data centers and connectivity over the past decade and how they have become interdependent. Data centers have grown enormously in size and now curate the services and interactions of the digital society. Connectivity has also advanced significantly, moving from rigid long-term contracts to flexible, on-demand solutions. Looking ahead, continued collaboration between data centers and connectivity providers will be needed to support growing bandwidth and latency requirements driven by new applications.

The document discusses dark fiber, which refers to unused fiber optic cables. In the late 1990s, many companies invested heavily in laying fiber optic infrastructure but went bankrupt after the dotcom bubble burst, leaving behind dark fiber. Today, dark fiber is in high demand for cloud computing and streaming services. The business model involves leasing dark fiber to customers so they can set up private fiber networks. The project scope involves licensing dark fiber arrangements that allow customers to connect their own equipment to the fiber network and transmit signals. Customers are responsible for trouble reporting and repairs. The dark fiber solution will be provided to select customers approved by marketing.
Leased lines are dedicated private connections used by businesses to connect distant offices, delivering high-speed connectivity over fiber. They provide premium internet access through technologies like Ethernet lines at a high cost. In contrast, broadband uses shared infrastructure to deliver internet access to homes and businesses over technologies like cable, DSL and fiber at lower cost but without dedicated bandwidth.
Fusion's MPLS service provides guaranteed bandwidth and secure connections between geographically dispersed business locations using multiple access technologies. It ensures optimal prioritization of traffic like voice, video, and internet. Channel allocation and routing in hybrid multichannel multiradio wireless mes...Ecway Technologies
The document proposes a hybrid multichannel multiradio wireless mesh networking architecture. It presents an Adaptive Dynamic Channel Allocation protocol (ADCA) that considers optimization for both throughput and delay in channel assignment. It also proposes an Interference and Congestion Aware Routing protocol (ICAR) that balances channel usage in the hybrid network with both static and dynamic links. Simulation results show that ADCA reduces packet delay without degrading throughput, and the hybrid architecture adapts better to changing traffic than static architectures with lower overhead and delay than existing hybrid network approaches.
VPN service providers have traditionally kept their network topology private from IP-VPN customers, limiting interaction between them. This document proposes a Topology Abstraction (TA) service that provides controlled visibility of the service provider's network to VPNs. The TA service generates abstracted views of the network for each VPN accurately and fairly. Three decentralized schemes are developed to generate TAs with different performance characteristics, improving call performance for VPNs, fair resource sharing, and higher network utilization for the service provider. Simulation results validate the TA service concept and evaluate the proposed techniques over various network topologies.

The document discusses how the Cisco Intelligent WAN (IWAN) solution allows companies to replace expensive MPLS VPN services with lower-cost internet services without compromising network availability, quality, or security. It analyzes four case studies that found annual cost savings ranging from 34-81% when adopting IWAN, with payback periods of 5-11 months and ROI ranging from 199-1220%. Adopting dual routers and internet links with IWAN can increase availability to 99.999% while still achieving cost savings.
Intro to Firetide Wireless Mesh NetworkingPaul Richards
This document provides an introduction to wireless mesh networking. It discusses how wireless mesh networks eliminate the need for expensive wiring by using wireless connections between nodes. This allows networks to be built and expanded quickly and flexibly. Wireless mesh networks are also self-configuring, self-healing, self-monitoring and self-tuning, making them simple to deploy and manage. By removing the constraints of wiring, wireless mesh networking provides a cost-effective alternative for implementing robust and scalable networks.
Network virtualization involves creating virtual versions of networking hardware and resources like switches and routers through software. This allows networking services and resources to be more easily deployed and managed independently of physical infrastructure. By creating logical abstractions of physical networks, virtualization improves flexibility, scalability, and mobility of virtual machines. While gaining benefits like reduced costs and improved disaster recovery, network virtualization also faces challenges around required expertise, limited performance of virtualized resources, and difficulties virtualizing wireless networks.
Software Based Traffic Separation at the Access LayerIJERA Editor
Access Network is the subscriber part of the telecommunications network or the network connecting the subscribers to the Internet Service Providers (ISP) [1]. In many countries including Tanzania access network is still predominantly made up of the copper cable based or other point to point wireless connections. This has kept the network in large proportions passive, inflexible and relatively unreliable [2]. This traditional network has long been tailored to the services generally provided i.e. voice, leased lines, Internet, corporate data and video conference, sometimes each provided by separate equipment and networks. This paper presents the study on approaches used by ISP in Tanzania to separate traffic in the access network. The paper also presents the effective way of traffic separation, whereby multiple hardware used to separate traffic currently has been replaced with single hardware. The traffic separation technique is based on creating logical links (software based) for each traffic type inside single physical link, providing a differentiated QoS support for each type of traffic according to its individual QoS requirements.
Network Configuration Example: Configuring Service Provider Wi-FiJuniper Networks
This document presents configuration examples for mobile and fixed-line service providers
to use wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) 802.11 to offload mobile data traffic from the macro cellular
network. It also presents step-by-step procedures for configuring the Juniper Networks’
service provider Wi-Fi solution and individual network elements to simultaneously deliver
both open Wi-Fi access (with a captive portal) as well as secure Wi-Fi access (with
EAP-based authentication).
This document summarizes a study that designed an integrated WiFi/WiMAX network using the QUALNET simulator. WiFi provides high data rates but short range, while WiMAX has lower data rates but much longer range. The study developed a coupler device that can receive WiMAX signals and convert them to WiFi, allowing seamless connectivity across both networks. This provides continuous coverage for users in high-rise buildings that may be outside WiFi range. The integrated network was analyzed in QUALNET and was found to provide high throughput, low delay, and consistent performance.
This document summarizes a study that designed an integrated WiFi/WiMAX network using the QUALNET 5.0.1 simulator. The study aimed to provide seamless connectivity for subscribers across different network types. It provides an overview of WiFi and WiMAX technologies and their complementary characteristics. The designed system model includes a WiFi/WiMAX interworking module that converts between the different network signals to allow coupling and handover between WiFi and WiMAX networks. The study analyzed the integrated network's performance in terms of throughput, delay, and jitter.
1. Service Provider Wi-Fi (SP Wi-Fi) is an emerging network architecture that uses public Wi-Fi networks to improve coverage and network capacity without the high costs of licensed small cell networks.
2. SP Wi-Fi networks use Wi-Fi access points connected to a central controller to provide connectivity in both indoor and outdoor areas. This allows service providers to augment their networks in a cost-effective manner.
3. Service providers can generate new revenue streams from SP Wi-Fi by retaining customers, offloading mobile data, becoming a "neutral host" to lease access to other carriers, generating analytics-based advertising, and targeting specific verticals like education, multi-dwelling units, and utilities.
This document discusses the design of a long range wireless point-to-point network on the 5 GHz frequency band to provide VoIP and instant messaging services. Specifically:
- Wi-Fi technology can be used to create point-to-point links of several kilometers using directional antennas, making it a cost-effective alternative to running cables over long distances.
- The system uses MikroTik SXT 5HnD devices and the proprietary Nv2 protocol to establish a point-to-point link between two buildings 1km apart on campus, connecting their LAN segments.
- An IP PBX server is installed to enable VoIP calls and instant messaging between the two network segments via the wireless bridge
Managing data offload over wlan access networks with iwlanJustus @GreenPacket
This document discusses using I-WLAN (Interworking Wireless LAN) to efficiently manage data offloading between 3GPP cellular networks and non-3GPP WiFi networks. I-WLAN allows for seamless connectivity, transparent authentication, application and service mobility to enhance the user experience when offloading data to WiFi networks. It provides a solution for mobile operators to securely offload data traffic from congested cellular networks to available WiFi networks to improve network capacity and the overall quality of service.
Practical active network services within content-aware gatewaysTal Lavian Ph.D.
The Internet has seen an increase in complexity due to the introduction of new types of networking devices and services, particularly at points of discontinuity known as network edges. As the networking industry continues to add revenue generating services at network edges, there is an increasing need to provide a systematic method for dynamically introducing and providing these new services in lieu of the ad-hoc approach that is in use today. To this end we support a phased approach to "activating" the Internet and suggest that there exists an immediate need for realizing Active Networks concepts at the network edges. In this context, we present our efforts towards the development of a Content-aware Active Gateway (CAG) architecture. With the help of two practical services running on our initial prototype, built from commercial networking devices, we give a qualitative and quantitative view of the CAG potential.
This presentation introduces WiMax, a wireless technology that provides broadband internet access over long distances at low cost. WiMax uses towers and receivers to connect users within a few miles to the internet via microwave signals. It has advantages over wired connections like quick installation and flexibility in pricing and bandwidth. While WiMax can support high speeds over large areas, it cannot do both simultaneously. In the future, WiMax is expected to provide affordable, widespread broadband access and become the dominant wireless networking technology within 5 years. It is compared to other wireless technologies like WiFi, 3G, and broadband, with each having their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of speed, range, and cost.
To communicate and conduct business, companies require dependable internet connectivity. The same as other utility services, internet access must function effectively and reliably. It ought to facilitate business rather than cause annoyance. Linkup Networks offer various services. We are leased line internet service provider, MPLS network service provider, SD WAN solution service provider, corporate business broadband service provider, managed Wi-Fi service provider, dedicated lease line service provider.

Scheduling wireless virtual networks functionsredpel dot com
This document discusses scheduling virtual network functions (VNFs) in wireless networks. It formalizes the problem of placing VNFs requested by mobile virtual network operators in a radio access network as an integer linear programming problem. It then proposes a heuristic called Wireless Network Embedding (WiNE) to solve the VNF placement problem. The goal is to ensure performance isolation between different network slices while efficiently utilizing resources. A proof-of-concept implementation of a management framework for enterprise WLANs is also presented.
This document provides an overview of WiMAX technology, including what WiMAX is, its performance capabilities, comparisons to other wireless technologies like Wi-Fi and 3G, mobility features, current regulations, and challenges. It discusses key topics such as the IEEE 802.16 standard, range, scalability, bit rates, quality of service, and comparisons of features between WiMAX, Wi-Fi and 3G. It also briefly outlines business and technical challenges for WiMAX deployment.
This document discusses video transmission using wireless networks like WiMAX. It begins with an abstract discussing real-time video communication needs and previous work transmitting video over wireless LANs and visible light communication. It then reviews WiMAX capabilities like providing wireless broadband access over 50km at 70mbps. The paper proposes a WiMAX transmitter and receiver design to efficiently transmit and receive video. It reviews literature on similar wireless video transmission systems and their limitations. The methodology section provides block diagrams and circuit diagrams of the proposed WiMAX transmitter and receiver. It describes the transmitter components like an analog to digital converter, RF amplifier and transmitting antenna. The receiver components include a receiving antenna, DC modulator, video amplifier and display device.

2. In order to reduce cost and complexity, fiber-wireless (FiWi) networks emerge,
combining the huge amount of available bandwidth of fiber networks and the
flexibility, mobility of wireless networks. However, there is still a long way to go
before taking fiber and wireless systems as fully integratednetworks. In this paper,
we propose
a network virtualization based seamless networking scheme forFiWi networks,
including hierarchical model, service model, service implementation and dynamic
bandwidth assignment (DBA). Then, we evaluate the performance changes
after network virtualizationis introduced. Throughput for nodes, bandwidth for
links and overheads leaded by network virtualizationare analyzed.
3. The performance of our proposed networking scheme is evaluated by
simulation and real implementations, respectively. The results show that,
compared to traditional networking scheme, ourscheme has a better
performance.
