Indian democracy faces several challenges including social inequality based on caste, class, gender and religion. There is also significant economic inequality with wealth concentrated among a small segment of the population. Large portions of India's population are illiterate and many states are more economically developed than others, creating regional imbalances. Additional challenges include linguistic conflicts between states, the rise of communalism and religious conflict, the influence of caste on politics, issues of terrorism, and secessionist movements in various parts of the country that threaten India's integrity and democratic system.
