NEGUS- ORGANIC AND
SYNTHETIC MUSICIANS
Organic and Synthetic
• Negus has a theory that, in relation to the music industry,
states that all artists are constructed by the media, some
more than others. He says that artists can either be
synthetic or organic. Synthetic being artists sell their
image through 2 ways- either as a boy/girl next door type
or through sexuality and rebellion.
• Whereas organic artists sell themselves through their
music. Star image is used to sell them as authentic and
this can also be used to sell them as authentic and this
can also be demonstrated through the notion that they
are producers of real music not crafted by an industry
EXAMPLE OF AN ORGANIC ARTIST
• Ed Sheeran is an organic artist this is because he developed his career
independently of the music industry instead of changing himself to fit the
industry. He writes the majority of his songs and plays his guitar in nearly
all of them, he developed his career through busking and playing live
arenas before getting signed and he now has freedom to choose his image
due to him building up his popularity. His album covers are open for
interpretation
EXAMPLE OF SYNTHETIC ARTISTS
• An example of a synthetic artist is One Direction. There career
was built on the Xfactor so they are manufactured by their
record label and TV demands and their young, cool image is
tailored to a female audience, their career began having their
songs written for them and have limited freedom of choice.
Topless in their music
video to impress
female audience
