Technology and Students’ Writing Skills
According to the recent researches, about 80 percent of teenager
and children use the smartphone and most of them go to the
writing center to fix their grammar and sentences because they
are not good for using correct grammar and spellings.
Technology makes human life more comfortable than before.
People do not need to meet when they need to make some
appointment and also they do not need to fix some sentences or
words because technology can do for people. Nowadays, people
are not able to live without smartphone and computer. They
always use them to communicate between themselves. Most of
teenagers and children are member of Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram. Additionally, they choose text messages rather than
calling or meeting to communicate with their peers. Naturally,
they try to find the way, how to communicate simpler and easier
than past time. As a result, this phenomenon causes them to
ignore some grammar rules and also they make the words
shorter than standard words. Technology makes some benefits
for our life, but it also causes some disadvantages for our life;
especially for students’ writing skills.
Recently, many people are using smart phone and computer.
While time is going, most of young teenagers also start to use
smart phone and they are familiar with computer use. Smart
phone and computer are continuously improving and those are
helping people to communicate with peers easier than before.
Specifically, they use text message and SNS (Social Network
Service), when they connect with peers. Moreover, those things
are making easy to use for people because of characterize of
technology. Most of people recognize that technology
developing life quality and it makes people to live easier than
2. before. However, some students are using those things with
wrong way.
Nowadays, many students use cell phone to communicate with
their peers and smart phone makes them to communicate easier
than past time. However, it causes poor writing skills for
students. Most of new smart phone has function, which makes
wrong sentences and words correct. Specifically, when people
use iPhone which is most popular cell phone in the world, they
will try to send some text message for their peers and if they
use incorrect spelling, it shows correct spelling and when they
click correct thing, it changes. According to Buchanan, who is
English teacher at University of Alabama at Birmingham, he
uses lots of time highlighting incorrect spelling on paper,
because most of post-secondary students rely on technology,
which are make spelling correctly with automatic way (no p.g.).
When people use their cell phone, they are able to notice that
cell phone fixes wrong sentences and some words automatically.
Since this function was used by students, students are
depending on automatic spell check. Additionally, while
students communicate with text message, they use some
shortcuts to communicate simply. This phenomenon makes also
students hard to memorize some words. Students do not
recognize importance of memorizing some words because they
do not need to memorize it because of improvement of
technology. Moreover, when students try to write some papers
to submit at their school or university, they use “Microsoft
Word”. While they are writing, they make mistakes which need
to be fixed. At the past time, people needed to ask to their
teacher or professor to fix it. On the other hand, when it
happens, “Microsoft Word” fixes those wrong things. If they
make some mistakes, the wrong sentences are underlining and
students can notice that they need to fix it. That function also
makes student depend on technology. Due to those two
functions, students can easy to write something without some
mistakes, but those things are making students indolent.
Moreover, students do not appreciate of significance of
3. grammar skills and memorizing words. As a result, those two
technology things cause students’ poor writing skills because
those things make students easy to write papers or text message.
Therefore, students need to refrain from using those
technological functions.
Recently, there are many SNS (Social Network Service)
websites such as “Twitter” and “Facebook” make students’
writing skill lower than before it created. During using some
SNS websites, students use some shortcuts and wrong sentence
structure. Using shortcuts and wrong sentence structure cause
students’ poor writing skills. Many teenagers and university
students use “Facebook”, “Twitter”, and “Instagram” while they
communicate with their friends. According to The Globe and
Mail which is Canadian newspaper, The number of high school
students who are not able to write are going up because of
exception of learning grammar, cell phone messaging, and
Twitter and Facebook which are called SNS (Social Network
Sites) (Kelly). Using SNS websites and cell phone makes
communicate easier than before because students are able to
ignore some grammar and do not have to memorize some
vocabularies. Therefore, students do not recognize importance
of learning grammar. It causes weakness of using grammar and
poor writing skills. To be specific, Barrett, who is working at
Waterloo University as administer of the English language
proficiency test, mentions that about a student among 3 students
cannot get the certification of the lowest step (Barrett). This
situation is going more serious than before, because the amount
of SNS websites are increasing and also usage of it is also going
up. Additionally, despite of disadvantages of large amount of
SNS websites, they are increasing. Moreover, teenagers and
university students are easy to sign up and they always expose
from those websites. They are able to log in anywhere with their
smart phone and they can communicate with peers by using
websites. Students writing skills can be decreased by
communicate with SNS websites because they use wrong
grammar and shortcuts while they connect with their peers.
4. Thus, while using SNS websites, students need to control using
shortcuts and be cautious to using grammar.
Most of students have their smart phone and the dependence of
using smart phone is the one of the big issue for recent day
because it also causes poor writing skills. During students
communicate, they use lots of shortcuts and wrong grammar
structures and it causes students’ poor writing skills. Nowadays,
increasing of usage of smart phone, people are able to connect
anywhere they want with their peers and it also becomes easy.
They are able to log in at the SNS websites such as “Twitter”
and “Facebook” with their smart phone. Therefore, students are
easy to communicate with their friends and they use some
shortcuts and wrong grammar when they are communicating.
Using smart phone, they are able to look some news articles and
play some games with friends. When they do those activities,
communication is one of the factors. However, communication
between students can cause poor writing skills due to using
inappropriate words and grammars. Most important thing is that
cell phone addiction is one of the big issues. It means that they
communicate usually with smart phone not by face to face. As a
result, because of smart phone addiction, students use shortcuts
and inappropriate words and grammars more frequently than
before. Therefore, smart phone addiction is also able to cause
students’ poor writing skills.
There is also an advantage for learning grammar with some
technological functions. According to Fisher and Hegelheimer
who work at the department of English at Iowa State University,
said that for students who are learning English as a second
language can learn grammar easy by using Internet (Fisher and
Hegelheimer). They also mention that technology made easy to
learn grammar and writing. Using Internet while students learn
writing and grammar can be easy and effective.
However, during using Internet, students are not able to focus
on learning grammar and writing skills. Additionally, they do
not use Internet or smart phone to learn writing skills. They use
5. those things to communicate with other people and watch some
stuff through the online news or SNS websites. Therefore,
technology causes harm effects for students’ writing skills.
To sum up, the improvement of technology leads to poor writing
skills for teenagers and university students. Due to technology,
they are able to communicate easier than before and when they
communicate with their peers by using SNS websites and smart
phone. While they communicate with people, they ignore
grammar structure and do not use correct spelling. Improvement
of smart phone and increasing of SNS websites are causing
students’ poor writing skills. Moreover, students expose from
those things and they cannot control to using those things. As a
result, technology gives harm effect to students’ writing skills
due to those reasons.
