This document provides an overview of Necto administration tasks including: defining users and roles, managing permissions, workboards, the BI server, applications, and sets. It discusses importing and organizing users and roles, setting permissions for roles, duplicating workboards to share connections, and configuring license information, security settings, and applications. The agenda demonstrates how to perform common administration functions in Necto like adding users, editing permissions, and managing workboards and applications.
2. Objectives
• By the end of this lesson you will be able to perform Necto
Administration tasks:
• Define Users and Roles
• Manage Applications and Workboards
• Configure the Necto Server
3. Agenda
• Users and Roles
• Permissions
• Workboard Management
• Server Administration
• Applications
• Sets
4. Necto Control Panel

Case Study
My Necto system needs to support 2
types of users.
• How do I import or create new
users?
• How do I implement security? Internet

9. Import Roles
You can choose to
create individual users
in Necto from within
the roles if you wish.
10. Import Users from CSV File
CSV file format, you
can import both Necto
and Active Directory
users.
In the CSV file
UserName and
Password headings are
cases sensitive
11. Users Management
Users defined in Necto application
Domain users defined on the Server.
In this case, domainname = PANORAMA
13. Defining User Properties
Topics, friends and
subscribed users are
described in relevant
lessons
Activate or lock user
account
Can map Necto users to
Domain users
Users can later modify their own properties,
by clicking on their name
14. Adding Users and Groups to a Role

Click to select

Note: a user can
have more than
one role
Then select groups from
multiple Domains
16. Demonstration 1: Adding Users and Groups
•Import users from CSV file
• Administration->Users and Roles-> Import Users
• Use file upload users.CSV
•Add a few users manually
•Create roles and add relevant users to roles
• Food Mart All
• Food Mart Finance
• Food Mart HR
18. Permissions
• Who can edit / read / view entities
• Entities are Workboards, Applications,
Users and Roles
• Permissions are granted to a Role
• Users that belong to a role inherit the
permissions
• Entities inherit containing folder
permissions

21. Setting Permissions for Users and Roles
The role “HR Managers” needs to
be able to edit users. Can I give
them that permission? You can.
But remember: only administrators
can modify users and groups.
You must give each member of the
HR Managers group the role of
administrator first
22. Demonstration 2: Granting Permissions
• Edit workboard permissions
• Food Mart folder – all Food Mart employees can edit
• Food Mart HR – only Food Mart HR can view
• Edit roles permissions
• Food Mart All – give the role Food Mart HR rights to edit
• View results
• Log in as Food Mart non- HR user and see the results
• Log in as Food Mart HR user and see the results
• As HR user, go to control panel – see that you don’t see users
• Add Food Mart HR users to Admin Role
• Login as administrator to do so
• View results
• Log in as a Food Mart HR user and see the results
24. Case EMEA and APAC use different databases that have
the same structure.
I want them to use the same workboard layout.
Can I define it only once?
1. Duplicate the
workboard
2. Change
connection
properties
36. Necto Security
• Allows managing of data security separate from the OLAP security
• Good for external users
• Can be in addition to the current OLAP security
• Accessed through the data security button In the Necto
Management area
• Covered in depth in a separate module
38. Defining Applications – General & Security
Click to add a new
application
Will override settings
defined in Necto
Administration
Keeps slicers when moving
between Workboards
Change data source for all
items in the application
40. Necto Sets Administration
You may define Sharing
and Exporting options in
addition to the more
general options for Necto
Sets.
41. Summary
• In this lesson you have learned to use the Necto control panel to
manage:
• Users and Roles
• Permissions
• Workboards
• Server Administration
• Applications
• Sets
The goal of this training is to provide its participants with the right knowledge and tools for Server Administration.
Once completing this training, we expect our participants to have acquired the necessary skills to:
Define users and roles
Manage applications and workboards
Configure the Necto Server
Only Administrators see the items in the second group
Connect to the OLAP or Tabular instance that the Roles are created upon and then Necto can import them and their details automatically.
To import Active directory users simply add the domain\username to the <UserName> column but leave the <Password> column blank
In the CSV file you must make sure that the ‘U’ and ‘N’ of UserName are capitalized along with the ‘P’ in Password
Note: you can only create a Necto user from this interface
The Users properties page opens automatically after user creation.
To edit an existing user’s properties, click the user name.
Users can access their properties page by clicking on their names.
Fields that can’t be modified by the users:
Active directory alias – enables you to associate a Necto user with an active directory user
Account Status – enables activating or temporarily locking a user account
Other properties are described in the relevant lessons:
Friends, Subscribed users and Topics are described in the “11 Necto 14 Comments and Discussions and Social Networking” lesson
Remember – groups are defined in the active directory
You must define the connection in the dropdown boxes on the right hand side of the screen
This area shows the webserver location and the number of members that can be shown in any single dimension tree at one time (soft max)
This area stores the advanced information (These should never be altered unless Panorama support specifically requests it)
Number of Data Sessions – Number of Threads Necto uses for all it’s communication channels
Queries timeout – A query will timeout if the OLAP or Tabular model does not respond within this time
Data Session Timeout – Necto will close data sessions if not in use after this time, thus saving resources
Number of Threads per Processor – number of threads that are running in parallel per processor
Additional connection string parameters – string parameters that can be added to an Extended Parameters area of an OLAP connection string
Authentication type – how are users authenticated
Windows – Necto supports integration with Active Directory users and Windows Integrated Authentication. This means that users already authenticated to a domain will have transparent access to dashboard pages, and will not be asked for user name and password.
Necto – Users can also be created in the Necto administration interface. These application users, in contrast to AD users, will be redirected to a login page when accessing the dashboard, where he or she will have to provide user name and password.
Mixed – if a Windows user is not identified by Necto, user is prompted to enter the username and password.
Security Mode – How data is filtered for users
No Security –Necto users will not be restricted on the data that they see
OLAP – Windows users will have restrictions placed on their data viewing capabilities based on the roles that they are in on the OLAP cubes
Necto – Windows users and Necto users will have restrictions placed on their data viewing capabilities based on definitions within Necto
Cache Data Views – when used, the response if faster and there is less overhead on the OLAP server. The drawbacks of using Cache Data views is that it saves only the initial query, and no actions performed at a later stage, such as drill-down or slice.
Show OLAP using their locale – Allows users to see data and dimension names in their own language it the cube developer has created translations for that language
Necto Administrator email – allows the Administrator to receive e-mails if there are issues with the system, these can be mailed automatically to him or her.
SMTP Server – The server for the email, this also stores the check at setting which is when the Notifier will schedule to see if there is anything it should do today
If Keep slicers between Workboards is set to yes – you can over-rise it by using shift-refresh
