The NEC 3000 Series digital microwave radio is designed to carry one OC-3/STM-1 plus two optional DS1s per RF channel in bands between 4-13 GHz. It uses an optional Cross-Polarization Interference Canceller to reliably transmit up to 16 OC-3s in the 6 GHz band. The radio features a modular design, various system applications, synchronization flexibility, advanced OAM&P, low power consumption, and a compact front-access design in under 4 square feet.

Capacity
Carrierscontinually have to grapplewithcapacity issues, andtheseissueswill only becomeevenmore
critical asmobileusers becomeattachedto data applications.To help operatorsserve thosehigh-capacity
needs, Irving, TX-based NECAmerica,Inc.,Microwave Radio Group, hasintroduced itscross
polarizationinterferencecancellor(XPIC) technology,which allowsserviceprovidersto carryas much as
two OC3s on a singlefrequencypair by usingbothhorizontal andverticalpolarizations.
This is significantbecausewithoutsucha technology,engineerswerestuck in an either-orsituation.
Trying to takeadvantageofbothpolarizations wouldlead to cross-polarization interference.The
technology negates thatinterference, thusallowing the carrierto transmit twicethedatait could
previously.This means thatby usingall eight channels andconfiguringthem allwiththeXPIC
technology, a carrier cantransmit asmany as 16155Mb OC-3s,or 2.6Gb ofdata,in the 6 GHz band.
Instances when this technology mightcomein handyinclude high-capacity routes—backbonerouteswith
lots offeedertraffic. Oftencarrierswill use radioswherefiberdoesn't reach, such as remoteareas,
mountainousterrain,oraroundwater, said Becky Holland,NECAmericaMicrowave Radio Sales–

doesn't evenhaveto beremotelocations,justareas wherefiberisn't available,"Hollandsaid.
The technology also helps carriers boost capacityin congested areas. Forexample, ifengineersareunable
to clean offall ofthefrequencies becauseofhighinterferencelevels, theycan employthecanceling
technology to getmorecapacity outofthefrequencies theyareableto use.
The XPICtechnologyis an optional featurefortheNEC3000 series radio, aswellas on the2000 series,
and carrierscan takeadvantageofthecapacity jumpwithout giving upa lot ofspace.A fullcomplement
