MW2011: Cope, A., Authority Records, Future Computers and Other Unfinished Hi...museums and the web
What becomes the role for institutions and scholars charged with the study and safe-keeping of the past and the near-future when traditional methodologies like "authority records" are forced to compete with automated data collection, machine learning, the now suddenly practical reality of "big data" and the rise of broad communities of participation?
The breadth and reach of the Internet and the availability of alternative data sources, whether they are harvested programmatically or fashioned by amateur communities of interest has created a world where both the conceptual and financial economics of traditional scholarship are rapidly being undermined. Further, in the absence of a way for non-experts to feel as though they can participate in the discourse outside of established venues and vocabularies the opinions and assumed meritocracies of experts are increasingly being overlooked entirely.
What would it mean to change the role of digital preservation and scholarly interpretation from one where it looks and feels, to those the outside, like castle walls to be more like a rough guide composed of road signs and fence-posts? To consider a project whose goal is no longer to weave elaborate tapestries of the past facts but to produce textiles, and patterns, to be fashioned into reflections of the present?
A presentation from Museums and the Web 2011.
Why the social web is here to stay (and what to do about it)Mike Ellis
The social web (was "Web2.0"...) calls to human experience and emotion in a way which transcends the hype often associated with it. While the phrase "Web2.0" does a good job of associating certain services and approaches together, it also has a down-side, suggesting that any day now, a "Web3.0" will be along to replace this transient, fickle technology with something new.
This talk argues that the "social web" has a momentum which should be taken seriously -- more seriously than "just mere hype", particularly by content-rich organisations such as those involved with cultural content. It also examines some of the issues -- particularly around the perceived challenges to authority and "value" of cultural institutions and assets -- and asks how these can be overcome.

Social Media Measurement: A romp for keys in the darkRob Clark
Presentation delivered to the IABC Golden Horseshoe chapter, Mar 30, 2011.
measuring what matters in a communications program through inference of social gestures.
The most important metric you WON'T find in Facebook InsightsRob Clark
As presented at PodCamp Toronto 2014
Likes. Shares. Viral impressions. Organic reach. Clicks. Social media offers a wealth of analytic tools showing how people are interacting with your content. Tallies of eyeballs and counts of social gestures. Yet few brands or agencies are actually paying attention to the metrics that matters most in marketing and communications.
Come for a discussion as to what the most important thing that you're not likely tracking is, and walk out with some solid ideas and best practices of how to track it. Those with Math Anxiety, fear not. This is a session about getting answers and not crunching numbers.
Stories have power; the power to move us to action, the power to teach and help us remember. Humans have evolved as story telling creatures and as such the telling of tales is deeply interwoven into how our brains work and think.
Presented at PodCamp Toronto 2015
One Like,Two Shares: The Basics of Social Media MeasurementRob Clark
(with apologies to Dr. Seuss)
If you can pardon the rather poor rhymes, some of the basic principles around measuring social media are addressed in this deck.
Storytelling is hardwired into the human brain. It’s an integral part of how we make decisions. A story is what makes a drink ‘Coca-Cola’ and not just carbonated sugar water. A story is what engages your audience and brings them back for more. This presentation for PodCamp Toronto 2016 covers elements of what makes a story work and how to fit that into your marketing.
Presented as part of a panel discussion on "Blogs, RSS, wikis, podcasts and social tagging: What's a communicator to do?" for the Halton Peel Communications Association, October 23rd, 2007. Not so much a technical discussion as trying to impart an understanding of why you would want to free your information via a channel such as RSS.
For a class originally called "60 sites in 60 minutes," although we ran it in several different forms over time. I have no idea how this one is going to turn out, because the PPT featured many videos (since our internet connection could not be relied on to go to a website within a reasonable amount of time, especially at busy times of the day).
Low-cost, low-prep library programming is important for libraries of all sizes and from all areas. This presentation will show you how you can take the lead in providing quality adult programming for your community while getting the most out of your programming budget.
Follow Chad Mairn as he enters the Blogosphere and explains what a blog is and, more importantly, how libraries can benefit from using them. During this hands-on session, Chad will demonstrate step-by-step how to create a library blog and highlight some of this vast and exciting territory called the Blogosphere.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Looking for ideas on how to clean a spill or a stain? You have the urge to redecorate a room, but need ideas for beginning this new project. Do you want to look at paint colors or wallpaper? It’s easy! See the Benjamin Moore link or the Better Homes and Garden (BHG) link. Most appliance manuals are available online. Appliance repair information can be found by typing the make and model of your appliance into the Google search box. If that does not work, go to the manufacturers web site, navigate your way to information on your model, click on support and/or user manual. Every site is different, you will have to hunt around but the information is there. There are also lists of repairman in your area. It is always best to consult a friend or neighbor for recommendations. Read reviews from clients before you call a repairman you don’t know.
