Procrastination:
The symptoms
Judging by your
pulse, you’ve got a
horrible case of the
procrastinations. It
could kill you dead
but only if it ever
gets around to it.
The perfectionist start…
Easily distracted…
Shaving the yak…
not this day…
A day may come when we finish our expense reports and
then go to the gym…
Procrastination:
The root causes
Sho, sho.
He once hadda
procrastination,
but then he
drank a tall glass
of salty water,
and cleared it
right up.
Adrenaline junkie
I regret

Procrastination:
The Treatment
You look like
you need to see a
doctor. Let’s get
you to the golf
course at once.
Admit the problem
Recognize when you’re:
• Trying for the perfect start
• SQUIRREL!
• Yak shaving
• Putting off til tomorrow
Clearly defined goals
and expectations
• Very specific outcomes vs
lofty intentions
• Very specific timeframes
• Break down into smaller
tasks with short
timeframes.

information?
• What do you know?
• What don’t you know?
Dealing with

• Not starting IS failure
• Not finishing IS failure

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Subject of this talk is procrastination.
  • #5 Not talking about laziness.
  • #6 Not talking about the disorganized or forgetful. Cluttered Desk https://flic.kr/p/9npEhz Jellaluna
  • #7 Talking about creative professionals Hard workers Strong work ethic
  • #8 But can’t seem to get going until they have a brush with their muse Oglaf.com http://oglaf.com/blank-page/
  • #9 No matter what, the work ends up at the last minute. Not an issue of not having enough time. If additional days added at the start, ‘do the work’ would occupy exactly the same amount of space In most cases the procrastinator hits their deadline
  • #10 Unless
  • #11 Not about time management Day planners and Gantt charts to a procrastinator Like telling a person with depression to cheer up. This isn’t about organization, or laziness, or lack of a work ethic It’s about an inability to start and an inability to focus.
  • #18 There are types of fish that live at the bottom of the sea under immense pressure. Remove them from the pressure and they fall apart. Some people are like that. They need the impending looming deadline in order to function.
  • #19 How many have a project they’ve started? Novel in the desk drawer? Half-coded app? Paints and canvas set aside but no actual art created?
  • #27 Important/Urgent – do first Important/Not urgent – decide when to do it Not Important/Urgent – delegate if you can Not Important/Not Urgent – dump if you can
