Did You Know…
• 16% of men and 29.9% of women age 50 or above
have osteoporosis*
• Nearly 1 in 2 women and up to 1 in 4 men age 50 and
older will break a bone due to osteoporosis
• Osteoporotic bone breaks are most likely to occur in
the hip, spine or wrist
• Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because
one can’t feel bones weakening

* National Bone Health Alliance; 1/10/2017
Osteoporosis is a
bone disease that
occurs when the
body loses too much
bone, makes too
little bone, or both.
Osteoporotic bones
have lost density or
mass and contain
abnormal tissue
structure
Men and women of
all races can have
the disease. While
the disease is more
common in older
people, it can strike
at any age.
In midlife, bone loss
usually speeds up in
both men and
women
Osteoporosis = Porous Bone

Age and Bone Mass
AWARE – Just Clinical©
Low bone mass
can progress to
osteoporosis, but
with changes in
diet and exercise,
you can slow the
bone loss.
Are You at Risk?
AWARE – Just Clinical©
Many conditions, diseases, and medications can cause or contribute
to osteoporosis and fractures. Ask your doctor if you may be at risk.
Low bone

Low body
weight
Family history

Frequent

Inadequate

High salt
intake
Excessive intake of coffee, cola,
or other caffeinated beverages
• Osteoporosis is associated with some
male-only conditions; such as
abnormally low testosterone levels
(hypogonadism)
• Men who break a hip or wrist are less
likely than women to get treated for
osteoporosis
• Men may, however, have fewer
treatment choices at this time because
some drugs have been tested only in
women
• Osteoporosis starts earlier and gets worse
faster in women because of midlife
hormonal shifts
• Women can lose up to 20% of their bone
density in the 5-7 years after menopause
• 80% of Americans with osteoporosis are
women
• All women go through menopause and
it leads to lower estrogen levels, which
cause bone loss
Starting at about age 65, both sexes lose bone at about the same rate.
Osteoporosis Facts for Men and Women

How to Improve Your Bone Strength
• Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D
• Cessation of tobacco use
• Avoidance of excessive alcohol intake
• Fall Prevention
• Lifelong participation in regular
weight-bearing and muscle-
strengthening exercise:
Walking, jogging, Tai Chi, stair climbing,
dancing yoga, Pilates

Osteoporosis Laboratory Testing at Schaumburg
 Blood calcium levels
 24-hour urine calcium measurement
 Thyroid function tests
 Parathyroid hormone levels
 Testosterone levels in men
 25-hydroxyvitamin D test
 Free cortisol test (blood or saliva)
 DHEA test (blood or saliva)
 C-reactive protein
 Homocysteine test
 Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity test
 Biochemical marker tests, such as NTx
and CTx
(sometimes used as an adjunct to bone density testing)
Love Your Bones … Get Tested!
Blood and urine tests can be used to identify possible causes of bone loss.
