6. Maturity framework – 4 dimensions explained
Governance dimension
• This dimension should deal with process
management, project management,
implementation management, as well as ITmanagement which is essential to ensure the
success of projects and process which employ
one of 5 technologies.
• Essential aspects of governance is whether
organization has management framework
allowing a successful use of a particular
technology in order to ensure contribution to its
business objectives.
• In addition, this dimension also should deal
with the human resources, skills and
competencies needed to successfully utilize
technology in question.
Technology dimension
• This dimension deals with directly
with the process of
deployment, implementation and
scalability of the technology in
questions. More mature
organizations have a scalable and
implementable framework for
technology deployment.
Organizational anchoring dimension
• The anchoring of technology within one business
function or department of organization, or whether
technology is spread among multiple business
functions and departments.
• More mature organizations would have a capability to
employ technology across multiple functions, ensure
that positive contribution of technology to the goals of
one department are also translated into positive input
into other departments/business functions (i.e. PR
increases brand awareness using social media, the
results are then fed directly into marketing in order to
nurture leads, and finally marketing forwards the leads
obtained to sales department)
Business view dimension
• Anchoring of a technology to contribute
to the organizational goals through a
measurable framework.
• More mature organizations would use
technologies to directly input into
strategic decision making or in order to
create a competitive edge.
7. Maturity framework – 5 maturity stages
explained
Model is design as such to assess technology adaption and deployment across 4 assessment dimensions through
5 maturity stages:
Level 1 Maturity – Initial Stage
• Initial stage of maturity is characterized by initial adoption of technology by organization, usually through
pilot projects. Best practices, governance and business value is not fully understood and process is
usually ad-hoc.
Level 2 Maturity – Operational Stage
• Operational stage of maturity is characterized by incorporating reproducible process and results of using
technology to fulfill some of short term business goals of one or couple of departments or business
functions within an organization.
Level 3 Maturity – Tactical Stage
• Tactical stage of maturity is characterized by well developed governance and best practices surrounding
deployment of technology in order to fulfill business goals of multiple departments. Sharing of know-how
and resources across organization is also well established.
Level 4 Maturity – Strategic Stage
• Strategic stage of maturity is characterized by technology deployment as the strategic resources of the
company. Technology deployment should plug into strategic goals of the company and there is a long
term perspective on usage and development of technology. Resource sharing, know-how and best
practices are exchanged across all levels of organization.
Level 5 Maturity – Innovation Stage
• Innovation stage is characterized as using a technology to gain competitive edge, improve products and
services and maintain market leadership.
