Subject Name: Electrical Machines-I

At the end of semester, the student will be able to understand the basics of Magnetic
circuits. They will also be able to visualize the various magnetic fields produced.
This will help them to understand different magnetic materials used in the
construction of electrical machines.

At the end of semester, the student will understand the concepts of electromagnetic
energy conversion systems that they can apply in different machines for the
calculation of electromagnetic force and torque. Also, they will be able to select a
suitable rating electrical machine depending on the load requirements.

At the end of semester the student will understand the basic principle, construction,
operation, internal behavior, applications of DC machines. The knowledge of
internal behavior of DC machines will help the students to design optimally the
machines.

DC generator. Also, they will be able to understand the recent trends in starting,
speed control and braking of DC motors using semi- conductor devices which are the

Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE):
• The Internal Assessment marks in theory papers is usually based on two tests generally conducted in each semester as per
the academic calendar stipulated by the institution in accordance to the affiliated university.
• Question papers for the corresponding course are prepared by the respective course faculty and are submitted to the Secrecy
well in advance.
• Students’ performance in the IA test is evaluated as per the scheme and solution prepared by the corresponding course
faculty.
• The continuous evaluation of the laboratories is done through the rubrics.

Direct Assessment = 40% of University Marks (on the scale of 3) + 60% of Mid Term Marks/ Lab Internal
Assessment (CO Attainment on the scale of 3)
Mid Term CO attainment:
Attainment Level 1: Students scoring less than or equal to 40% marks out of the relevant maximum marks
is considered to be attainment level of “1”
Attainment Level 2: Students scoring 41-59 % marks out of the relevant maximum marks is considered to
be attainment level of “2”
Attainment Level 3: Students scoring 60% or more than 60% marks out of the relevant maximum marks is
considered to be attainment level of “3”
University CO attainment:
The university CO attainment is calculated on the basis of the number of students scoring more than University
average percentage marks. The attainment level is obtained by converting the percentage marks on a scale of 3.

• Course outcomes attainment
The performance of the students in internal assessments and university exams will lead to the attainment of Course Outcomes’. The indirect
assessment also contributes to the Course Outcome attainment. Course Outcomes’ of a particular subject will be mapped to the relevant PO’s in
the scale of 3, 2, and 1. Attainment for particular Program Outcome is calculated by taking weighted average of all course outcome attainment
addressing that particular PO. Similar calculation will be done for all the POs and for every course. The PO attainment for a batch of students
will be calculated by taking the sum of all attainments for a particular PO and dividing by the number of courses mapped to the same PO.

• EXIT SURVEY:
Jodhpur Institute of Engineering & Technology has an Internal Quality Assessment
Cell (IQAC) responsible for the academic quality monitoring and assessment.
IQAC prepares a set of questions relevant to the program outcomes/graduate
attributes and also questions relevant to Program Specific Outcomes. These
questions are formulated and asked to get the information regarding the opinion
and various observations about the program from the final year students. The
questions are rated by the outgoing batch in the range of 3, 2 and 1 and the exit
survey attainment is calculated accordingly.

Outcome Based Education
“Outcomes based education (OBE) was propounded by William
Spady in the 90s to bring the focus of formal education to what
the students learn rather than what they were taught. OBE is a
system giving priorities to ends, purpose, accomplishments and
results.

Process of Attaining
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
Step 1
Department Vision and Mission statements are
taken as the referral for formulating PEOs of
the program.
Step 2
A committee nominated by the departmental
head is delegated the responsibility of
developing the PEOs of the program.
Step 3
Inputs are taken from various stakeholders
about the PEOs of the program.
Step 4
The committee summarized the collected
inputs from the stake holders based on which
the PEOs of the program were framed.
Step 5
The statements were then discussed with all
the faculty members in the departmental
meeting and their views were noted and
accordingly the statements were finalized,
adopted and disseminated.

• Program outcomes essentially describe what Students are expected to learn and be able to
implement in the real world at the end of a program.
• National Board of Accreditation prescribes the following POs:
PO 1: Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering
fundamentals, and an engineering specialization for the solution of complex engineering
problems.
PO 2: Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyse complex
engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics,
natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
PO 3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems
and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate
consideration for public health and safety, and cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.
Program Outcomes (POs)

PO 4: Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including
design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
PO 5: Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT
tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations
PO 6: The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health,
safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
PO 7: Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and
environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO 8: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the
engineering practice.
PO 9: Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and
in multidisciplinary settings.
PO 10: Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community
and with the society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation,
make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
PO 11: Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and
management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and
in multidisciplinary environments
PO 12: Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and

Knowledge Dissemination
The plans are presented during the Faculty Development session
before the beginning of every semester where the course
coordinator explains their strategy to deal with a course.
Faculty members prepare an session plan in adherence with
the academic calendar for their respective courses before
commencement of the semester.
The plan contains course outcomes, mapping of the COs with POs
and PSOs, add on content to bridge the curriculum gaps, lecture
schedule and delivery plan, assignments and tutorial questions.
