- 2. OVERVIEW INTERVENTION CAMP 2 The InterventionCamps lessons are directed by the teacher and designed to be highly interactive among: (i) students with their teacher; and (ii) students with their peers.

- 5. STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 5 Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review) (5 minutes) Subject content review to determine learners’ background knowledge and skills determine learners’ level of knowledge
- 6. STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 6 Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention) (5 minutes) A description of the purpose of the lesson Language: Review words and phrases relevant to the lesson.

STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 7 Lesson Component 3: Speed Challenge (10 minutes) Students, in groups of 2-3, attempt to answer as many flash cards as they can in 1 minute (with the goal of 30 or more) for the number facts set(s), with up to 2 attempts per student. Students graph the number incorrect and correct in their workbooks. Teacher assists students needing additional support.
- 8. STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 8 Lesson Component 4: Speed Questions (5 minutes) Students answer in 2 minutes questions on operation and a few inverse operation on the number facts set(s). Questions are marked by the students after the 2 minutes.
- 9. STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 9 Lesson Component 5: Worksheets (10 minutes) The students work on a puzzle and activity sheet for the number facts. Teacher moves around the room and assists those needing additional support.
- 10. STRUCTURE OF THELESSON 10 Lesson Component 6: Frenzies (Operation Squares) (5 minutes) This consolidates learning. Students fill in as many facts as they can in 4 minutes, then they mark their answers.

Students create their unique grid by selecting and placing 9 numbers from the list, and cross off the numbers if they answer a question posed by the teacher, until there is a winner.

- #1 This time, we have to walkthrough the lesson components in the intervention learning camp.
- #2 A strength of the design is the focus on both student and teacher learning. The intentions and expectations of the Learning camp are for: students to consolidate and enhance their thinking in topics covered; teachers to enhance their pedagogical practices by focusing on relevant selected skills, which include 21st century skills; and teachers to update, strengthen and expand their pedagogic knowledge in ways that encourage students to be involved in learning activities at appropriate levels. Research findings related to student learning quality and ‘time’ are related to student ‘time-on-task’. Time-on-task refers to the time students are actively involved (engaged) in some aspect of the learning process in class. The suggested times for each component are intended to maximize the time available for student involvement. This will encourage the student to work efficiently, timewise, through the lesson.

- #5 One important purpose of the subject content review by teachers at the beginning of each lesson is to determine learners’ subject background knowledge and skills, enabling teachers to build on this. This activity also reminds students of what they have already encountered. Review on 1-2 number fact sets for the lesson. Students review facts from each number fact set as an exercise, to determine level of knowledge. Then an interactive discussion with the class to enhance understanding. Students fill in the blanks in the number facts in their workbooks.
- #6 Goal: to be quick and accurate in answering questions within the number facts set(s). This component offers teachers a chance to acquaint students with the purpose and/or intention of the lesson. It is valuable if students see a link here with their prior knowledge or experience. The teacher can connect it to the responses and levels of understanding evident from students in Component 1. In addition, this component is an appropriate time to address what students might expect/aim to achieve, i.e., their lesson goal(s). Teachers should clarify, in straightforward language, the learning intention for the students as well as what success will look like.
- #12 Lessons cannot be individualized, as they will progressively work through the number facts for the entire class. Each operation is completed for the facts 0 to 10 in the order: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The final two lessons are on problem solving using the number facts learnt. The progression is as follows: The lessons have a consistent structure, as follows, with examples from the first day’s lesson given. A game is played in the first two lessons per day that is replaced by a final reflection in the third lesson within a day.
