A talk from the Design Track at AWE USA 2017 - the largest conference for AR+VR in Santa Clara, California May 31- June 2, 2017. Nathaniel Guy (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory): Using AR/VR to Augment Space Exploration The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory is using cutting-edge augmented and virtual reality technology to explore space and our own planet in innovative ways. JPL’s scientists and engineers plan activities for the Mars Curiosity rover and analyze Martian geology while walking on a 3D reconstruction of the Martian surface. Engineers designing rovers and spacecraft can preview full-scale holographic prototypes before any parts are built. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station can use AR interfaces to receive virtual assistance from experts on the ground and work more efficiently. These are only some of the projects in AR and VR that are going on right now at JPL. This talk will present recent projects that leverage immersive technology to tackle unique visualization challenges, and discuss research that shows the beneficial effects of using AR and VR to accomplish these tasks. http://AugmentedWorldExpo.com

This document describes the development and testing of a hexapod image stabilization system to correct for jitter in astronomical imaging. The hexapod thermally isolates components from a cryogenically cooled environment. Extensive bench testing was performed and the hexapod was able to match recorded jitter from a balloon mission. Further minor adjustments are needed before integrating the hexapod with a CCD and thermal control system to meet specifications. Laboratory setup simulates a balloon guide camera and tests the hexapod's ability to counter measured jitter and stabilize images of a simulated star field under vacuum and cryogenic conditions.

1) Twelve researchers from different fields came together at NASA's Frontier Development Lab to use AI to help defend Earth from asteroid impacts.
2) They developed methods using machine learning to help determine an asteroid's composition from meteorites, shape from radar images much faster than before, and the best deflection technique based on its properties.
3) Key results included an app using deep learning to rapidly identify meteorites to learn asteroid compositions, reducing asteroid shape modeling from 4 weeks to a few hours using a 3D autoencoder on radar data, and a 98% accurate decision tree to select the best of three deflection options based on 1.5 million simulations.

The document proposes a new concept called the New Worlds Imager (NWI) as an alternative to the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) for directly imaging exoplanets. The NWI would use a large starshade and interferometer in space to block starlight and combine light from exoplanets to image them with resolutions of 100km at 10 parsecs. It could directly image biomarkers on Earth-like exoplanets within the next 10-20 years using existing technology and would further the goal of finding life outside our solar system.
Imaging the Unseen: Taking the First Picture of a Black Hole
<p>This talk will present the methods and procedures used to produce the first image of a black hole from the Event Horizon Telescope. It has been theorized for decades that a black hole will leave a "shadow" on a background of hot gas. Taking a picture of this black hole shadow could help to address a number of important scientific questions, both on the nature of black holes and the validity of general relativity.</p><p>Unfortunately, due to its small size, traditional imaging approaches require an Earth-sized radio telescope. In this talk, I discuss techniques we have developed to photograph a black hole using the Event Horizon Telescope, a network of telescopes scattered across the globe. Imaging a black hole’s structure with this computational telescope required us to reconstruct images from sparse measurements, heavily corrupted by atmospheric error. The resulting image is the distilled product of an observation campaign that collected approximately five petabytes of data over four evenings in 2017.</p>
Rick Fleeter, Voyage to Alpha Centauri, 13-10-2017
In February, 2017 the Space Horizons workshop at Brown University focused on sending spacecraft to the Alpha Centauri stellar / planetary system. The first questions that come to mind include: getting there in some relevant amount of time, i.e. less than a human lifespan; communicating back over the 4+ light years distance; surviving the space environment en route; What do you do when you get there, and; how much is all that going to cost?
We also asked: what could we learn by going there vs. wouldn’t we learn more directing those resources to developing instruments here in the earth and near-earth environment to observe the star system (and probably other star systems) and exoplanets remotely? Would going there have some special meaning to people on earth as America’s landing of people on the moon did, versus the Soviet robotic missions? And what might we learn along the way - thinking our way to another star - that might change how we do other possibly completely unrelated things - closer to home?
We barely managed to even address all those questions in a day and a half at Brown, but undaunted I will do the best I can to distill that concentrated dose of interstellar travel down another factor of 30 into a talk 0.0014% of the trip time to Alpha Centauri at the speed of light. I.e. 30 minutes.

A Conceptual Design for a Large Ground Array of Fluorescence Detectors
This document proposes a conceptual design for a large ground array of fluorescence detectors to study ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The design envisions an array covering over 40,000 km2 using a simplified fluorescence detector telescope with a single, large pixel and fresnel lens. It could achieve the same statistics as the Pierre Auger Observatory above 1019.5 eV but at a much lower cost by reducing the number of photomultiplier tubes and electronics. First simulations show the design could efficiently trigger on air showers using timing from three stations spaced 20 km apart with no surface detector required. The document calls for further R&D to develop this concept into a workable design for the next generation ultra-high energy cosmic ray observatory

2) Early prototypes at JPL have shown benefits like reducing processing times from weeks to hours and allowing more scientists worldwide to access Mars rover data.
3) Moving forward, JPL will advance concepts like Cloud Readiness Levels and Cloud Oriented Architectures, transition more applications to an operational cloud model, and continue prototyping new use cases to maximize the benefits of cloud computing.
Ancient Greek Technology
Ancient Greek inventors developed many technologies still used today. They invented the astrolabe for astronomy and navigation, using it to determine star positions, latitude, and the visibility of celestial objects - similar to modern augmented reality star chart apps. The Greeks also invented early cranes to assist with construction projects and watermills to grind grain, predecessors to modern construction equipment and water turbines. Additionally, they created early alarm clocks by fitting water clocks with indicators and alarms to measure and announce the time, forerunners of modern timepieces.
Large telescope

DEEP LEARNING SUMMIT ASIA 2016

This document proposes a mission architecture using minimalistic robotic platforms called spacecraft/rover hybrids to enable systematic exploration of small solar system bodies like Phobos. The hybrids would use internally actuated flywheels to tumble, hop, or move in a pseudo-orbital fashion across the low-gravity surface. A prototype demonstrated basic tumbling and hopping. FDL 2017 Lunar Water and Volatiles
This document describes research on using deep learning to automatically detect craters on the lunar surface. Key points:
- Craters near the lunar poles may contain water ice in permanently shadowed regions but current maps have issues that make planning missions difficult.
- The researchers created a new dataset of over 28,000 labeled images to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) crater detector.
- The CNN achieved 98% accuracy, a major improvement over previous methods, and was much faster than manual detection. This tool will help create better maps to plan future missions to study lunar volatiles like water ice.
Next-Generation Observatory: Fluorescence detector Array of Single Pixel Tele...
The document describes the proposed FAST (Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes) concept for a next-generation ultra-high energy cosmic ray observatory. FAST would consist of 500 single-pixel telescope stations spaced 20 km apart, covering an area of 150,000 km2. Each station would have 12 telescopes with 48 photomultiplier tubes providing 360 degree coverage. This would provide over 10 times the exposure of current observatories like the Telescope Array and Pierre Auger Observatory. An initial prototype was successfully tested at the Telescope Array site in 2014, detecting air shower signals in coincidence with the Telescope Array fluorescence detector. Further R&D and construction of a full-scale FAST prototype is planned

This document proposes a mission architecture using minimalistic robotic platforms called spacecraft/rover hybrids to enable systematic exploration of small solar system bodies like Phobos. 1. GAIA is a European Space Agency satellite launched in 2013 to create a 3D map of the Milky Way galaxy.
2. It contains three instruments - photometers, spectrometers, and astrometers - that precisely measure the positions, motions, distances, and physical properties of over 1 billion stars.
3. To observe the entire sky, GAIA spins and precesses, taking measurements of each star approximately 80 times over its 5 year mission lifetime. The satellite's measurements enable astronomers to understand the composition, formation, and evolution of our galaxy.

This talk will present examples and discuss how UX best practices can be applied to create effective inquiry-based learning experiences that unpack seemingly complex modern technologies. Through iterative design coupled with repeated visitor testing, we deconstructed the surprising perceptual science and technology behind VR and AR into 16 cool hands-on experiences that spark “aha” moments and minimize the need for wordy explanations. We keep concepts intuitive, playful, and fun to understand. Our traveling exhibition goal is to show visitors they're smarter than they suspect, inspire students to aim for STEM careers, and help teachers lead deeper NGSS and Common Core dives both in and out of the classroom. The MR Lighting Tools is a Unity library and MRTK extension that estimates and replicates the current environment's lighting on additive displays to increase immersion in mixed reality. It works by using physically based rendering techniques to shade 3D objects based on the normal, texture, and estimated lighting captured from the environment's cameras, though cameras cannot fully capture how lighting appears to the human eye. The library is available from Microsoft and the developer hopes to expand it to include shadows and better account for room size to further improve immersion.

This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
