AGRICULTURAL PLACEMENT
Assistant to PhD Student with Additional Project (Reading/Kent) June- August 2015
This placement involved assisting a PhD student in data collection and analysis of
wheat lines as well as my own project on the comparative root growth of
Festulolium and Lolium grasses and wheat lines with introgression from wild emmer.
I gained experience in root sampling in field conditions and extraction and
measurement of roots. I demonstrated the use of statistically valid experimental
designs and statistical analysis to test for meaningful differences between
cultivars/lines using the software programme GenStat. I prepared a written report
and poster for display in Reading Universities Agriculture, Policy & Development
Department.
RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE
Agronomy (Wiltshire) April 2015
I crop-walked with an agronomist, identifying diseases, plant growth stages and
deficiencies, understanding the opportunities and threats faced by arable farmers. I
2. demonstrated an analytical mindset when considering how to maximise yield and
gross profit margins.
AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Manor Farm (Home Farm)
Ongoing
Extensive exposure to livestock and arable enterprises through growing up on a dairy
farm. Involvement in milking, milk recording, TB testing and the arable enterprise
for feeding the cattle has meant that I have an understanding of consistently high
standards, animal welfare and farm business strategies, and am able to cope with
new challenges on a daily basis.

VOLUNTARY WORK
Reading Experience and Development Award (RED) October 2014 – March 2015
To achieve the RED award I completed over ten hours of volunteering including
collecting donations for charity and marshalling at Reading 5 mile race. This
demonstrated citizenship in the community.
Schools Worldwide Expedition to India July 2014 – August 2014
I fundraised £3000 to take part in a month long expedition to help communities in
India. This demonstrated money management in fundraising, working effectively as
part of a team which resulted in a finished building project and individually I helped
support a lesson, demonstrating clear presentation skills.
POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Vice President of Athletics Club (2015-2016): Assisting the president by liaising with
Students Union and coaches, organising entries and ordering equipment. This
demonstrates time and money management, listening and organisational skills.
Course Representative for Agriculture (2014 – 2015): Forming a link between
university students and staff at meetings, requiring listening and speaking skills.
Midday Supervisory Assistant 2014): Supervising secondary school children
demonstrating interpersonal, leadership and team work skills.
Head Girl at Sheldon School (2011 – 2012): Organised the duties of 50 prefects,
demonstrating leadership, listening and communication skills and problem solving.
ACTIVITIES AND SPORTING INTERESTS
Athletics and Badminton: I am part of Reading Knights Athletics and ranked 1st
in the
UK for U20s for my half-marathon time; this shows my determination to improve.
3. I am part of the Reading University Badminton team and have represented Wiltshire
at county level.
