Research Experience
Graduate Externship Research, Tufts; Leptospirosis Viability in the Environment, Thailand May 2016-July 2016
● Tufts Institute of the Environment Fellowship Grant Funded
● Will be trained in mathematical modeling of the epidemiology of tropical diseases
● Will be performing soil and water sampling, as well as testing these samples for pH, temperature and mineral content
● Will be testing samples using Real-time PCR and Culturing for Leptospires
● Goal: Compare water and soil quality parameters in the environment with the presence of leptospirosis in order to predict the
bacteria’s viability in the environment
Independent Research, UMass; Lemur and Domestic Animal Parasite Study, Madagascar June 2014-July 2014
● Collected fecal samples and body condition scores from livestock, dogs, cats, pigs and bamboo lemurs
● Preformed fecal egg counts and identification using fecal flotation and modified McMaster’s sedimentation techniques and
tested all samples for Giardia with IDEXX snap tests
● Goal: Compare apparent health to parasite load and diversity
Independent Research, UMass; Lamb Milk Replacer Study, Hadley Livestock Barn September 2012- May 2013
● Obtained weekly measurements of mass, height, muscle gain and growth rates of lambs on 1X and 1.5X concentrated milk
replacer and those on ewe milk.
● Prepared milk replacer and cared for and maintained lamb populations within the barn.
● Goal: Compare multiple concentrations of milk replacer concentration on growth rates of lambs in Hadley, MA with the ewe
milk lambs as a control.
● UMASS IACUC training (for general research animal welfare) and approval for this study.
