What is a Narrative Structure?
• Narrative structure is about; The procedure used in telling a story and
the connotation of the story.
it is also the essential structure that
inspires the order and method in which a
story is presented to a viewer.
Story-refers to
the primal
materials of
vivid action as
they might be
defined in
sequential
imperative.
Plot- the main
events in a story,
which not all the
stories are told in
chronological
order. The events
relate to each
other in a pattern
or sequence.
Todorov’s Theory- narratives are structured in 5 stages;
Equilibrium- A balance and stability as it has been.
Disruption/disequilibrium-A problem that threatens the
equilibrium
Recognition of the disequilibrium- a recognition of the
problem
Repair- the fixing of the problem
New equilibrium-a innovative and slightly transformed
state ensuing from the conflict/problem
Linear Narratives

what occurs from one point in time to the
following time without using recurrences or
flash-forwards and then retreating to the
present.

family and workers, and
chronological series of
flashbacks
End- the meaning of the word
rosebud is re revealed to be a sled in
which Kane was playing with when he
was taken away from his mother
PATTERN INVOLVES:
START-MIDDLE-END.
Non-Linear Narratives
• Non-Linear Narratives

actions are reordered or interpreted in
a manner that Indicates the significant
