Todorov, Propp, and Levi-Strauss' narrative theories are analyzed for their application to the film Divergent. Todorov's 5 stage theory only partially fits the narrative of Divergent. Propp's 7 character archetypes are identified in Divergent, with Tris fulfilling the hero role. Levi-Strauss' theory of binary oppositions is also seen in themes of strength/weakness and right/wrong that are central to the plot of Divergent.
