Narrative
Amy Clout
The usefulness of narrative
 Narrative can be defined as the story that is being told and the way
in which that story is told, i.e. the techniques used.
 In our teaser trailer we used montage editing, as most teaser trailers
do, to fit a lot about the film and a lot of story hints in a short space
of time. The shots jumped around and jumped from clip to clip so we
could fit a lot of different shots in the one minute teaser trailer. This
also makes it look more interesting to the audience and gives the
viewers more hints about what the film could be about and the
    genre it is.
 Our teaser trailer is also non-linear, meaning it is out of time order, this
is because we wanted the clips to jump around and for the
audience to want to see more and so they found it more appealing.
 We also aimed to create a restricted narrative, so there was still
things the audience didn’t know and we implied that by watching
the full movie they would find these things out in the hope that this
would entice the audience to go and see more.
Plot, Story and Enigmas
 Borwell and Thompson’s idea on Plot and Story:
• The story is the combination of the entire sequence of events that is
shown as well as everything we conclude has happened but may
not have been shown, basically everything that was inferred.
• The plot is the explicit presentation of events, i.e. the details of the
events that are expressed in a clear and obvious way.
• Elements of the story are left open to interpretation as we tend to
assume things about characters etc. and the plot is occasionally
left open, like in Inception for example in order to make you think
about how it could end and other possible endings.
 Barthes’ idea on Enigmas:
• His idea on enigma codes is that it is the images/sequences that
control the audience’s thought on what is happening and that
information can be held off to make the audience want to know
what’s happening. They present puzzles to the viewers that need
to be solved, and they can be both minor and major.
Conclusion
 Toconclude I think that narrative is very
important in both full films and teaser
trailers as without it it would just be a series
of shots without any meaning. The plot
and narrative make the trailer or film
interesting for the audience and make
them want to watch more, without the
narrative, a plot or a storyline films would
 be very boring.
