MISE-EN-SCENE

Within the trailer the main character is wearing a smart/casual suit. This
would suggest that he is more important than the other train travellers as
they are wearing casual clothing e.g. jumpers and t-shirts. The realism of
the mise en scene used signifies that the content within the trailer should
be viewed as realistic, it also helps reflect the genre of the film; being sci-fi
action with a psychological twist as it allows the audience to view and
relate to the sci-fi content as being part of real life. E.g. when the main
character is placed in the ‘source code’. Another aspect that contributes
to reflecting the sci-fi content is the machines and technology that the
government officials use. The setting of being in a train and an American
city gives the audience a location to recognise. As the audience can refer
to the location the intriguing story line becomes more believable to the
audience.
EDITING
The trailer begins with a blurred, distorted image that zooms out to the
watch, the image appears to be an event that is occurring but is distorted
so the audience can not figure out exactly what is going on, adding a
mysterious feel to he trailer enticing the audience to go and view the film. I
also feel the blurred content has a sci-fi feel to it, further reflecting the
genre of the film. The fast montage of clips at the beginning of the trailer
portrays the action genre to the audience, it gives the audience an idea of
the pace of the content that will be featured in the film. There are not many
fades used throughout the trailer, which are normally commonly used in
trailers to show the passing of time between each shot. This can be
justified as the shots are not as fast paced as expected giving the
audience time to take in the content they are seeing and try and piece
together the information to result in a rough idea of what the film is going to
be about. Half way through the trailer the blue blurred image appears
again ending up in the main character being in the ‘source code’. This tells
the audience that he has been almost transported to a different location
and this effect is being used to reflect passing of time and place.
Institutional information is used so the audience know the key details e.g.
producers of the film, release date, main actors etc. This helps them
decide whether to view the full film or not.
CAMERA ANGLES/SHOTS
There is a variety of camera angles and shots used throughout the trailer.
There are a large amount of close ups used, these allow the audience to
focus on the important objects featuring in the film e.g. a close up on is
watch as it is later revealed that he will only have a window of 8 minutes
to figure things out therefore the element of time is an important factor.
There are also close ups of the main characters face to make his
expressions and emotions more known to the audience allowing them to
feel more involved in the film and increase their ability to relate to the
character. There is also a variety of over the shoulder shots used
between the main character and female that compliments the diegetic
sound of dialogue that is used. There are also establishing shots for the
setting of the American city that the train is travelling in, this allows the
audience to discover a sense of orientation and increases their ability to
relate to the content in the trailer. The camera shots used occur in a
variety of sequences that in some way go against the usual conventions
of how they would appear in a trailer. This varied sequence adds extra
detail to the trailer and entices the audience to be interested as they don’t
know what to expect next.
SOUND

The majority of the sound used is diegetic sound. This comes in two
forms. The first diegetic sound is dialogue. As there is minimal shots
that include super-imposed text, the dialogue adds detail for the
audience to help them understand what they are watching and to try and
conclude what the full film will be like. The other diegetic sound used is
sound effects, e.g. the sound of the train, opening of the can, the
screeching noises when the train blows up and crashes. All this diegetic
sound adds to the perceived reality of the film but by making the sound
effects enhanced and louder than they usually would signifies that they
are an important occurrence and also dramatizes what is occurring in the
trailer, potentially increasing the intensity of how the content is viewed.
There is also a quite non-diegetic sound used in the background. It is
almost like a tempo beat as it is minimal but gives a sound for the cuts to
synchronise with allowing the trailer to appear professional and the fast
tempo of it adds to the excitement and intensity of the trailer and also
reflects the fact that the film will be action packed.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNT

From analysing this trailer I have learnt a few techniques that I will
incorporate into my final teaser trailer;
1. Incorporate sci-fi content within a realistic location to allow the
content to appear realistic to the audience.
2. Ensure the main character is dressed in smarter clothing to allow him
to appear more important than the other characters featuring in the
   trailer.
3. Ensure that the sound track used is synchronised with cuts and
events that occur within the trailer to allow the trailer to appear
   proffesional
