This a presentation that was developed alongside the summer research program, Summer Institute in Math and Science (SIMS) at UCSB. The program duration was two weeks and also included students taking rigorous mock classes. SIMS was designed for incoming science students to help them succeed in the difficult path of science and engineering.

In vivo effects of quantum dot on organs development before maturity
Abstract
Objective(s):
The field of nanotechnology is rapidly expanding .The development quantum dots quantum dot (QDs), show great promise for treatment and diagnosis of cancer and targeted drug delivery little data on the toxicity of QDs, especially for in vivo applications, are available. As a result, concerns exist over their toxicity for in vivo applications. Then, cytotoxic effects of cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots on organs development before maturity were studied in this study.
Materials and Methods:
One month old male Mice treated by injection of CdSe at the doses of 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg. Structural and optical properties of quantum dots were studied by XRD, UV-Vis absorption spectrum and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and the number of cells in seminiferous tubes of various groups were analyzed using SPSS 16 program (one way ANOVA test).
Results:
Histological studies of testis tissue showed high toxicity of cdse in the dose of 40 mg/kg which followed by decrease in lamina propria thickness, destruction in interstitial tissue, deformation of seminiferoustubes, and reduction in number cells. Also histological study of lung tissue showed in 20 and 40 mg/kg doses destruction in interstitial and epithelium tissues.
Conclusion:
On the whole, this study showed high toxicity of cdse on development of testis and lung tissues, even in low doses considering lack of literature review in this field, this study can be an introduction to researches about toxicity effect of quantum dots on development of organs.

This document describes a method for controlling the number density of ZnO nanorods grown via chemical bath deposition on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. The method involves forced hydrolysis of a zinc acetate seed precursor solution through controlled additions of water and low-temperature heating, which increases the size of the ZnO seed crystals deposited on the FTO. Larger seed crystals result in fewer but larger ZnO nanorods after chemical bath growth. Specifically, increasing the water concentration in the seed precursor solution from 0 to 1M increased the seed crystal size from 4-5 nm to 35 nm, decreased the number density of seeds deposited, and led to ZnO nanorods with larger diameters, lengths, and lower number densities after growth

This document summarizes recent findings that some bacterial and viral DNA sequences can induce low frequency electromagnetic waves in high aqueous dilutions. Specifically:
1) Electromagnetic waves between 500-3000 Hz have been detected in certain high dilutions of filtrates containing DNA from various microorganisms.
2) The waves are produced from both whole genomes and isolated DNA fragments as short as 104 base pairs.
3) The waves appear to be triggered by excitation from the ambient extremely low frequency electromagnetic background.
4) This phenomenon could allow for highly sensitive detection of chronic bacterial and viral infections.

Many of the potential applications of ZnO are dependent upon either its overall shape (e.g. piezoelectric devices or LEDs), or the relative ratio of the different ZnO faces (e.g. catalysis). These applications have stimulated renewed interest in controlling the aspect ratio of ZnO crystals during their growth. One promising way to control the aspect ratio of ZnO crystals during hydrothermal growth is via the introduction of small organic molecules. Whilst there have been many studies showing that particular molecules affect ZnO crystal shape, few studies explain exactly how particular molecules influence growth. The overriding goal of the work contained in this thesis is to enhance understanding of how small organic molecules affect ZnO growth surfaces.

Nano seminar final
Nanotechnology holds promise for advances in biotechnology and medicine. Its applications could include building faster computers, more efficient solar cells, finding tumors using nanorobots, and improving agriculture. In animal reproduction, nanotechnology is still in its infancy but may transform the livestock sector. Examples include using nanoparticles for sperm preservation and imaging, microencapsulation of sperm for controlled release, and biosensors to detect reproductive hormones for estrus detection. While nanotechnology shows potential, oversight is needed to ensure safety and address societal issues as these applications develop further.
Shining a light on virus infection with high-resolution microscopy
Each year the Astbury Centre holds a research retreat to promote interdisciplinary activity, to discuss and present latest findings and to promote and encourage interdisciplinary research at the highest level. In this work, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles were green synthesized using Carica papaya extract by the Co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed the formation of ZnO and Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles with the wurtzite crystal structure (hexagonal). Due to the presence of dopant Manganese (Mn) the optical spectra showed a redshift in the absorbance spectrum. Structural and optical properties of the end product showed that the manganese ions (Mn2+) substituted the Zinc ions (Zn2+) without altering the Wurtzite structure of ZnO. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra confirm the presence of metal oxide present in the end product. The antibacterial efficiency of ZnO and Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles were studied using the agar well diffusion method against Gram-positive and Gram–negative bacteria. It is obvious from the results that Mn doped ZnO nanoparticles exhibit better antibacterial activity than ZnO nanoparticles.

Smart parking 2020 vision

Nano Enabled Drug Delivery (NEDD)
- Nanoparticles ranging from 1-1000 nm can be used as drug delivery vectors to transport therapeutic agents and imaging molecules through the body. They aim to avoid biological barriers and selectively target tissues.
- Nanoparticles can encapsulate drugs and antibodies. When they reach the tumor, antibodies bind to tumor cells while drugs are released into the cells, killing them.
- Stimuli like light, magnetic fields, ultrasound and electric pulses can be used to trigger drug release from nanoparticles at target sites. This allows for external control over drug delivery.

Bioprinting
Bioprinting uses 3D printers to construct tissue by depositing layers of living cells, biomaterials, and growth factors to build living structures. It represents an advance beyond simply seeding cells onto scaffolds by incorporating temporal aspects of tissue development. The first workshop on bioprinting discussed the state of the art, including conceptual bioprinters, successes printing simple tissues, and promising preclinical studies of more complex organs, but developing techniques to print fully functional replacement tissues and organs remains a challenge. Bioprinting holds promise for applications in transplantation, regenerative medicine, and treatment of injuries.
Nano technology in medicine
Nanomedicine uses molecular tools and knowledge of the human body at the nanoscale to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. It involves applications of nanoparticles currently under development as well as longer term research using nano-robots to make repairs at the cellular level. Nanopharmacology uses nanotechnology to develop novel methods of delivering drugs using nanoparticles, which have one dimension of 1000nm or less. Nanomedicine offers advantages like enhanced drug stability and delivery, increased bioavailability, targeted drug delivery to specific tissues and cells, and opportunities for real-time monitoring and cellular repair. However, challenges include high costs, manufacturing defects, and lack of extensive clinical trials.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
