S
ynseal is proud to introduce
Celsius solid roof – a new and
innovative system that employs
a structural framework of timber
components with environmentally-
friendly Envirotile external roof tiles
and cappings to create a truly warm
solid roof construction, with no
possibility of cold bridging.
“At Synseal we have been monitoring
competitor solid roofing products for
a while and the market is now ready
for our CelsAius solid roof,” says
Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products &
Customer Service Director. “Sitting
neatly alongside our exclusive
Celsius performance glass, our new
solid roof solution can be summed
up in just two words: thermal
excellence.”
At the heart of the system are
thermally-efficient structural
insulated panels (SIPs), enabling
Celsius solid roof to achieve a
pitched roof U-value of 0.18 W/m2K
for compliance in England and Wales.
The U-value of 0.15 W/m2K for
compliance in Scotland is achieved
by fitting insulated plasterboard to
line and finish the solid roof interior.
“Selecting the right supply partners
to complement our Synseal
Envirotile was key to the success of
Celsius solid roof and with structural
insulated panels (SIPs) from
Kingspan TEK Building Systems,
fixings from Rapierstar and optional
roof windows from VELUX we have
sourced the very best products to
construct a well-engineered system
of the highest quality,” comments
Synseal’s Head of R&D, Phil Parry.
Synseal Envirotile external roofing
components are injection moulded
to Synseal’s exact specifications
from 100% recycled polypropylene.
Precision manufactured and
lightweight, each single Envirotile
has a low profile chamfered front-
leading edge with an aesthetically
pleasing riven finish, is 12mm in
thickness, weighs just 610 grams
and is extremely simple to fix yet
performs exceptionally, securely
locking into adjacent tiles without
any need for battening to form a
quick-fitting and fully integrated
roof covering. A single mechanical
fixing point at the head in addition
to the innovative interlocking design
ensures that Synseal Envirotiles
fit securely and easily, ready to
withstand wind and weather.
Envirotiles are 80% lighter than
standard concrete tiles, weighing
8.4kg per square metre in contrast
with cement or natural slate roof tile
products that typically weigh 50 kg
per square metre.
Available in a choice of 3 popular
and appealing colours: Black, Brown
or Terracotta, the interlocking
Envirotiles are self-draining, self-
ventilating and branded with
the Synseal logo for ease of
identification. The single or double
Envirotiles are easy to handle and
cut on site for a precision finish at
concealed hip or valley roof edge
intersections.
In addition to single and double
roof tiles, the Synseal Envirotile
range includes an elevated and
interlocking ventilated ridge cap,
radius end/apex cover, hip, hip end
cap, gable end cap, dry verge, tile
starter trim and push-fit screw
cap cover to ensure a high quality
aesthetic finish for each Celsius
solid roof.
Fully approved and registered by
the Local Authority Building Control
(LABC), Celsius solid roof is available
for existing glazed conservatory
roof replacements or new build
applications in Lean-To, Georgian,
Gable and Victorian building
extension styles.
Synseal’s Roofing Technical
Manager Neville Gleed has been
the driving force behind the product
development, overseeing all the key
design stages including component
prototyping and trial site installation
of the full system to ensure that
every detail of Celsius solid roof is
perfect and ready for launch.
“Our aim has been to create the
best-looking, most thermally-
efficient and easiest-to-fit solid roof
on the market today,” says Neville,
“while at the same time delivering
full compliance with Building
Regulations for new or retro-fit
applications. Speed of installation
is essential, because on site time =
money.”
Unlike rival systems which employ
aluminium rafters, aluminium ridge
beams, aluminium eaves ring beams,
aluminium valleys and aluminium
box gutters similar in design to
glazed conservatory roofs, Celsius
solid roof is a truly warm roof,
featuring all timber construction
without any metallic “cold spots”.
Alan Green, Product Support
Engineer at Synseal sums it up
neatly: “As product designer, my
brief was to achieve improved
installed thermal performance using
proven materials with no inherent
design weaknesses to eradicate
cold bridging. Our Celsius solid roof
is truly warm to provide building
extensions that homeowners will be
able to use in comfort, 365 days a
year.”

BFRC licence holders are reminded that
suppliers of their sealed units have a legal
obligation to comply.
Warning on Compliance
The British Fenestration Ratings Council’s (BFRC) advice
concerns BS EN 1279 Glass in Buildings: Insulating
Glass Units.
It makes clear that this is not a new requirement.
Since the 1 July 2013 it has been mandatory for
sealed unit manufacturers to meet the requirement
of the Construction Products Regulation (2013) and
subsequent CE Marking.
It is a legal requirement for unit manufacturers to
declare the performance of their products. As such a
sealed unit supplier should be able to provide you with
documentary evidence to confirm the product has been
tested appropriately.
All sealed units must meet the requirements of Part 2
of BS En 1279. However, if purchasing gas filled sealed
units, a supplier must be able to demonstrate that they
have passed BS EN 1279 Part 3.
It is not acceptable to claim the sealed unit complies
with BS EN 1279 when it is undergoing test, as the
outcome is unknown. As the supplier of the
window you have a responsibility to ensure that the
IGUs used within your windows comply.

Change in the Building Regulations could mean that manufacturers
and installers that are unable to demonstrate that products they
are supplying meet PAS24 : 2012, will be locked out of the new
build market with immediate effect.
T
he amendment to the
Building Regulations
were rubber-stamped by
Parliament at the end of March
and make PAS24:2012 or Secured
by Design (SBD), the minimum
standards for window and door
security in all new homes.
It is argued by Sliders UK,
manufacturer and fabricator of
SBD patio doors,bi-folding doors
and composite doors, that this
will mean that anyone who is
unable to demonstrate that the
product that they are supplying
meets requirements under the
new Building Regulations, will
be immediately ‘locked out’ of
the new build sector.
“We welcome the new
regulations as driving higher
standards in home security and
increased professionalism within
our industry,” commented Ian
Longbottom, Managing Director,
Sliders UK.“What is less positive
is that the industry has been
slow to recognise the impact of
these changes.”
Mr Longbottom warned that
many manufacturers and
installers had “slept-walked” into
regulatory change and could pay
a significant price, for doing so.
“There are manufacturers and
installers who have slept-walked
into change and as something
which has the potential to close
both out of the new build sector,
the ramifications are huge,
unless they now urgently review
their supply chain.”
The Building Regulations &
(Amendment) Regulations 2015
became law on the 27 March and
follows what was meant to have
been widespread consultation
on the Housing Standard
Review (HSR). This closed in
November 2014 and critically,
as the foundation for regulatory
changes, it recommended that
water efficiency,accessibility and
security, should be nationally
defined and assessed under
Building Control, not by planners
or funders.
Approved Document Q of the
Second HSR Consultation
(now ‘Part Q Security’ of the
Building Regulations) states
that ‘doorsets should be
manufactured to a design which
has been shown to meet the
requirements of PAS24 : 2012 or
be designed and manufactured
to meet the requirements of
PAS24….doorsets demonstrating
compliance with the police
SBD initiative will also meet
the provisions of this Approved
Document.’
The amendment to Building
Regulations applies immediately
but will not be enforced until the
Change that
TakesthePAS
autumn. “We have always seen
security as the critical factor in
our product range irrespective of
the market they’re in, offering an
SBD composite, bi-fold or inline-
sliding door, delivers immediate
commercial advantage,” said Mr
Longbottom. “But now there is
a real regulatory driver towards
PAS24 : 2012 products and that
is going to deliver a step-change
in the industry’s approach.”

GGF urges glass and glazing businesses
to understand implications of Consumer
Rights Act 2015
Be a Scout & Be Prepared
T
he Act is a major part of the government’s
reform of UK consumer law and it is
claimed that it will boost the economy
by £4 billion over the next 10 years by
streamlining complicated law from eight
pieces of legislation into one.
Although the Glass and Glazing Federation
admits to failing to get any of its
recommendations adopted in the original Bill,
it is committed to informing its members of
the ramifications before the law comes into
force at the beginning of this October.
The principal changes that need to be
recognised are:
• What should happen when goods are faulty.
• Unfair te rms in a contract.
• What happens when a business is acting in
a way that is not competitive.
• Written notice for routine inspections to be
given by public enforcers, such as Trading
Standards.
• Greater flexibility for public enforcers to
respond to breaches of consumer law, such
as seeking redress for consumers who have
suffered harm.
As well as these changes there are two new
areas of law covering:
• What should happen when digital content
is faulty – the Act now gives consumers a
clear right to repair or replacement.
• How services should match up to what has
been agreed and what should happen when
not, or when they are not provided with
reasonable care and skill, e.g. giving some
money back if it is not practical to bring the
service into line with what was agreed.
“The new Consumer Rights Act will have far
reaching consequences for all companies in
our industry and I’d urge every company to
be well prepared for the impact,” stated Brian
Smith, Home Improvement Director, GGF. “The
main concern is how the Act will introduce a
‘short term right to reject’ of a default 30 days
for consumers to reject faulty goods, rather
than continuing with the current ‘reasonable
period’.”
The GGF has expressed its concerns to the
Department of Business, Skills and Innovation
(BIS) that this could create problems for the
domestic replacement glazing industry when
consumers try to reject windows and doors
which have been installed.
The Federation has arranged for a presentation
by a Trading Standards Lead Officer, entitled
Likely effect the new Act will have on our
industry at the GGF Joint Window and Door
Group and Conservatory Association meeting
at the end of April in Solihull, Midlands to
which all members are welcome. Further
presentations by GGF staff to members around
the regions will then follow during the months
up to October before implementation of the
Act.

I
t found that the Tories
were ahead despite 71% of
respondents claiming that
the needs of the construction
industry have been ignored by
the key political parties.
The survey questioned
more than 1,000 product
manufacturers, contractors,
architects, house builders,
developers and suppliers from
around the industry, asking
for their thoughts on policies
affecting the construction
industry. The overwhelming
majority replied that they do
not feel the interests of the
industry have been addressed
by the election campaigns,
with only 29% stating that
construction has received
adequate political attention.
When asked which party
would be best for the industry
if it comes to power, the
Conservatives demonstrated a
clear lead with 54% of the vote.
The results place Labour well
behind at 30%,while the Green
Party has pushed ahead of the
Liberal Democrats, coming
in at 6% and 4% respectively.
UKIP managed to claim 4% of
the vote, with SNP and Plaid
Cymru jointly accounting for
the remaining 2%.
Despite the positive indication
for the Conservatives, the
survey also appeared to reveal
a desire for political change
with 72% stating that a
change in government would
have a positive or neutral
impact on the construction
industry and just 28% replying
that this would have ‘negative
consequences’.
Whenaskedtolookmoreclosely

ONS stats don't stack up for
thewindow industry
T
he statistics don’t appear to stack up for the
window industry in the newly published report
from the Office of National Statistics (ONS)
on the size and performance of the UK low carbon
economy, according to Andy Jones, Managing Director
at Edgetech UK, a Quanex company.
“The report states that in 2013 (the latest dates included
in the report) total turnover for the manufacture and
supply of energy efficient windows and doors is £2.8
billion, which we believe to be about right,” says Andy.
“It’s the supporting figures that don’t stack up. The
ONS report states that there are only 180 companies
engaged in direct activities for the manufacture and
supply of energy efficient windows and doors with
17,500 people employed in the sector. We believe that
considerably more companies are involved and that a
much higher number of people are employed.
“With the report putting £20 million for investment,
this figure too looks unrealistically low. Because we
cannot reconcile these figures with what we know, we
are writing to the ONS to get further clarification of the
numbers included in the report.”
The section on energyefficient products shows windows
and doors ranks third, taking 17 percent of the total.
Insulation is in the top slot with 34 percent of market
share. Other products included are energy efficient
lighting, heat recovery and ventilation, energy controls
and control systems, and sustainable architecture and
buildings.
“But,” adds Andy, “one thing that’s very clear is 4 out
of 6 product categories included in the ONS report
are eligible for reduced VAT at 5 percent. Lighting
and energy efficient windows and doors are the only
products that have 20 percent VAT added to them. If
the Government is really serious about creating a
low carbon economy it needs to support all UK based
companies manufacturing and supplying energy
efficient products.
“In 2008 Edgetech was the first company in the industry
to bring the argument to Government in a petition. It
was debated in parliament and included in Hansard,
the record of every debate for the House of Commons
and the House of Lords. The petition declared that
substantial energy savings, and consequential
environmental benefits, could be achieved with the use
of energy efficienct products and that the Government
should therefore reduce VAT on such products.
“When the General Election is over, we will be lobbying
our local MP again to look again at supporting reduced
rate VAT.

ewly formed investment vehicle, DW3 Products
Group, is delighted to announce that it has now
acquired highly regarded industry innovators
Window Widgets and Eclectic Systems from Dan Gill.
Window Widgets was founded in 2004 and has become
the first port of call for key components for the
window, door and conservatory sectors; while Eclectic
Systems is best known for developing the fast-growing,
revolutionary Residence 9 window system.
The acquisitions bring the total number of companies
within the DW3 Products Group to four, with the new
additions sitting alongside Solidor and Nice Door
Panels. Each business shares similar distribution
channels, thereby enhancing the Groups’ geographical
reach and distribution capabilities.
At a time when building products are manufactured
overseas and shipped into the UK, DW3 is proud to be
a firm supporter of innovative British manufacturing
businesses, which are providing home grown
employment opportunities.
Gareth Mobley, CEO of DW3 Products Group,
commented: “This is fantastic news and an incredibly
exciting investment for us. Under Dan’s stewardship,
R9 has grown exponentially over the last three years
and Window Widgets has become hugely important as
an industry favourite for fabricators from all corners
of the U.K and Ireland. Dan has an exceptional talent
for developing truly game-changing products. The
combination of our know-how and shared passion to re-
define the industry we know so well, creates significant
potential for the Group.”
With immediate effect, Dan Gill will take up the role
of CEO of the DW3 Group Window Division and sit
on the main DW3 Board. Dan commented: “This is an
incredibly exciting investment for us and one that has
considerable scope for development. It means that we
can fast track some new product launches and blossom
into a fully-fledged systems house as we build the
wider group through organic growth and acquisition. I
am really looking forward to joining the board of DW3
and to working alongside Gareth and the great team
that’s been assembled.”
Gareth commented:“The introduction of Dan as the CEO
for the Window Division will provide us with prodigious
expertise in terms of product design and engineering.
This investment will have a transformational effect
on the group and we hope, on the wider industry. We
have a lot up our sleeves, so installers and fabricators
can look forward to more revolutionary products in the
near future.”
DW3 Products Group, with the backing of NorthEdge
Capital, has firm plans in place for additional
investments during the course of 2015, and beyond.
The Group has quickly established itself as one of the
most exciting in the home improvement sector, and
with four acquisitions in four months, the benchmark
has been set.

GOODBYE GERRY!
A
fter more than 20 years at the helm, Profile
22 fabricator BBH Ltd has waved goodbye to
one of its most charismatic and well-regarded
team members, co-owner and company director,
Gerry Banthorpe.
Gerry started the business in 1992 with his cousin,
David Banthorpe. It was his ambition to run a
successful company, one to be proud of. 23 years
on, and with a bulging order book, Gerry has retired
leaving BBH Ltd in the very capable hands of his
daughter Dawn, who has worked alongside her Dad
for the last 17 years, and David.
To wish Gerry a fond farewell the BBH team invited
friends, family and key suppliers to a retirement party
held at the company’s offices in Horsford, Norwich.
Nic Rossano, Profile 22 business development
manager went along to present Gerry with a special
retirement gift from all the team at Profile 22. BBH
Ltd has been a loyal and valuable Profile 22 customer
for nearly a decade.
Speaking at the party Dawn paid tribute to her
Dad’s success, “They [Gerry and David] started the
business with no orders, little machinery and no
staff. Mum and Jos soon joined, running the office
whilst Dad and David processed the orders by hand,
and manufactured the windows. Today the company
has 14 employees, orders into the summer months
and has been through two recessions.”
A keen golfer, Gerry hopes to spend much of his free
time trying to achieve his other ambition in life; a
lower handicap!

T
he champion of the Top Gun challenge hosted by
Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, is taking on the
London to Paris bike ride to raise money for Great
Ormond Street Hospital in memory of his daughter,
Lacey-Mae.
Graham Carley, Production Manager at Double R
Glass & Roofing Systems, finished on the top spot at
Edgetech’s Top Gun Challenge last year making him
the fastest Super Spacer® applicator in the UK. He’ll be
needing that speed when he rides the 300 miles from
London to Paris in just four days this July.
Graham hopes to raise £1,500 for Great Ormond Street
Hospital where his daughter Lacey-Mae was cared for
during the two weeks of her life.“The care she received
from GOSH was truly brilliant,” said Graham. “We owe
so much to the nurses and doctors there.
“This is why I am getting on a bike and taking on the
London to Paris bike ride. I have not ridden a bike for
about 10 years but I have so much motivation to finish
the challenge as I believe my daughter would have
wanted me to do it.”
The route will allow the charity cyclists to take in some
of Northern France’s most significant World War battle
sites, following the Normandy coastline and cycling
through the best of the French countryside before the
final stretch down the Champs-Elysees to the finish
line beneath the Eiffel Tower. The cyclists will also

THEENCEPHALITISSOCIETY
GETS VEKA’S SUPPORT FOR 2015
T
he VEKA UK Group has named the Encephalitis
Society as its nominated charity for 2015,
announcing a series of events that will take place
over the course of the year to raise funds for the support
and research organisation.
Gabriela Hammond, Head of Human Resources at The
VEKA UK Group commented: “This is a cause that’s
close to our hearts and, as such, The VEKA UK Group is
dedicating a full year’s support to the society as opposed
to the normal six-months.
“Fundraising got off to a flying start in January, with
many staff members staying ‘dry’ for the month in return
for sponsorship money! March’s Network VEKA AGM
saw members donate over £700 to use the ‘70s-themed
props, supplied for the evening’s entertainment – an
amazingly generous contribution to make in just one
day.
“Susan Lunney, the Network VEKA Office Manager
and Karen Galawan, PA to our Sales and Marketing
Director teamed up to help us make the most of Easter’s
fundraising opportunities. They baked and decorated an
amazing batch of cupcakes that sold out in a flash at our
Burnley HQ.
“We’ve been selling various goodies – from pin badges
and wrist bands to cook books and even cuddly toys –
and, with such a diligent workforce, we’re finding cones
of sweeties prove an ever-popular energy-boosting
treat!”
If you’d like to keep up with The VEKA UK Group’s
fundraising activities, news is regularly posted on
both its website and social media accounts. Gabriela
continues: “Besides the events and activities we’re
hosting within the company, there’s lots more planned
that we’re welcoming customers and suppliers to get
involved with too.
“For the more active among us, there are charity runs,
sponsored bike rides and the annual VEKA golf day to
look forward to. And, for those who enjoy their sport
more from the comfort of an armchair, the Euro football
sweepstake always proves a popular money-spinner!
“You can follow all our progress online – no doubt
there’ll be many entertaining and embarrassing pictures
shared on our Facebook and Twitter accounts and we

B
ury St. Edmunds’ Network VEKA member,
Frames Conservatories Direct has revealed
one of the secret weapons behind its National,
Regional and Fitter of the Year wins, awarded at
the organisation’s recent AGM.
Making the most of the Network’s unrivalled
marketing support, the company turned to its Web
Toolsofferingtocreateaninstant-quote-generating
price engine for the Frames Conservatories Direct
website.
Managing Director Adrian Lewis explains: “The
price engine has proved a massive aid to our sales
process. We receive about 15% of sales enquiries
via the website and, of all our lead-generating
activities, the price engine boasts the highest
conversion rate-currently standing at around 47%.
“The double glazing industry has long been
plagued by a bad reputation, inherited from
the unscrupulous traders of the 1980s and ‘90s.
We’re proud to be part of Network VEKA – an
organisation established to restore confidence in
the industry – and we’ve found that customers
love the independence that the price engine offers
when researching a quote. It also gives a great first
impression of our company as we are able to give
an indication of price upfront.
“Consumers are increasingly going online for all
sorts of purchases–from low-cost items like music
and books to life-changing investments like cars
and homes. Customers want the buying process
to work for them and, using the price engine, they
get just that. There’s no need leave the comfort
of home, no pressure from sales consultants or
telemarketers, and no waiting around for your
quote.
“The interface couldn’t be simpler, guiding users
through style, size, material and colour options to
arrive at a ‘ballpark’ figure for the work they’d like
done. When we then discuss the quote further –
over the phone or in person, at our showroom or
their home – we know there’s a starting point that
the customer is comfortable with. The first call –
made within 24 hours of a quote - is always very
positive and ‘warm’ as customers already have a
good feeling about our business.”
Adrian describes howFrames Conservatories Direct
has used the price engine in its marketing efforts:
“With a price-driven campaign such as a sale, we
direct customers straight to the price engine from
the ‘sale’ page of our website as it’s clear, in those
cases, that bargain prices are at the forefront of
the user’s mind. In more product or benefit-driven
campaigns – energy efficiency or added security,
for example–we’ll use the online quote generator
as one of several available calls-to-action.
“Some of the negative feelings customers have
about home improvement projects can be
overcome by experimenting with the online price
engine. We’ve found that making it a lead feature
in our advertising has met with great responses. In
fact, through customer feedback, it’s clear that it’s
a hit overall!”

M&M headS to online hub
for marketinG success
W
igan-based VEKA Approved Fabricator
and Installer, M&M Windows has reported
an instant, positive response to its new
marketing materials – created via the online
Marketing Hub, exclusive to members of The VEKA
UK Group’s Approved Installer Scheme.
The scheme has welcomed around 400 Approved
Fabricators, Installers and Suppliers in less than a
year and supports businesses in a variety of ways.
Besides benefiting through association with the
UK’s leading manufacturer of PVC-U window and
door systems, other plus points for installers include
lead generation from a dedicated homeowner-facing
website and access to the Marketing Hub, which
features over 100 templates for various marketing
materials – all of which can be personalised at the
click of a button.
Mike McCoy along with brother Matt and parents
Colin and Maureen make up the family team behind
M&M Windows. He comments: “It’s barely been two
weeks since we placed our order through the online
Marketing Hub and, already, we’ve won four jobs off
the back of the items we created.
“There’s a massive range of materials to choose from
so,on this occasion,we opted for retail brochures and
drop cards. I left a stack of cards in the local gym and,
within days, we’d won three jobs through the interest
they generated.
“My nephew has been out, distributing cards around
the local area too. He’s quoted for a further two jobs
and we already know we’ve won the contract for one
of them.
“We’re especially pleased with the retail brochures.
What I particularly like about them is that the
system automatically uploads our name, address,
contact details and logo, so we can order a print run
of bespoke brochures that are clearly ‘ours’ – there’s
no ‘one-size-fits-all’ overprinting. Best of all, it’s all
done for us – it couldn’t be easier! Our business is
presented as having the support of The VEKA UK
Group and,for anyone who knows about their leading
position in the industry, that endorsement can only
be a good thing!”
The Marketing Hub offers everything an installer
could need to present their business in its most
professional light. From showroom stands and vehicle
liveries to press adverts and vouchers, all items have
been professionally designed by an award-winning
marketing agency,meaning Approved Installers forgo
significant costs while achieving enviable results.
Amy Grundy,National Sales Manager for the Approved
Installer Scheme adds: “M&M’s recent successes offer
further proof, if any were needed, that this package
of support really works for businesses. There’s no
charge to join – all we ask is that companies supply
CE-Marked products, manufactured by an Approved
Fabricator, installed by an MTC-qualified technician
and covered by an insurance-backed guarantee.
“As just one tier of support offered by The VEKA UK
Group (we also boast the industry’s leading installer
organisation, Network VEKA), the Approved Installer
Scheme is already registering fantastic results. We
can’t wait to see where M&M’s exploration of the
materials available will lead them next!”

Windowbase fun
at NFA race day
T
he National Fenestration Awards (NFA) hosted a great day out at Oulton Park race track on March
26th. In keeping with its remit to bring a breath of fresh air to industry awards, NFA laid on a
series of driving experiences at the Cheshire race track. Neil Parsonson, Database Manager of
Windowbase, was invited as a main sponsor of the awards – and kindly invited Tom Rigby, Business
Development Manager of sister company MRA Marketing, to go along too.
After some instruction in the relevant techniques and a few practice laps, the three events - Caterham
driving, Land Rover Defender off-road and Toyota Rally car racing - were timed and an overall ranking
decided. Much to his delight Neil came in joint third – which he won’t let Tom forget in a hurry! (Let’s
just say Tom didn’t trouble the top 10).
“We had a really enjoyable day,” says Neil. “The National Fenestration Awards promised to break with
tradition and they certainly did that with this Awards Ceremony. We’re looking forward to seeing NFA
grow and expand and we’ll be sponsoring them again for 2015. I’m now waiting to see what they come

HURST OPENS THE DOOR ON YOUNG ENTERPRISE
H
urst Plastics was on hand to present a prestigious award
to local youngsters at the recent Young Enterprise in
North Humber Celebration and Awards ceremony. The
event was an exciting finalé to a successful academic year for
the enterprise, during which Hurst helped to guide youngsters
in the local community as they took their first steps in the world
of business.
The Young Enterprise scheme marks Hurst Plastics’commitment
to forge stronger links with its local community. Darren Glew,
Operations Director at Hurst Plastics, presented the ‘Teamwork
& Communications’ award to the winning Young Enterprise
company Unity from Hymers College, Hull.
Darren was recently elected as Chair of the board at Young
Enterprise North Humber. He says: “This social enterprise is
designed to help youngsters develop newskills and achieve their
full potential. It’s inspiring to see them breaking down barriers
and working positively towards their goal. It’s a privilege to be
involved in this scheme and to make a meaningful contribution
to our local community by supporting the region’s future
business leaders.”
Under this year’s Team Programme, Darren and Scott Chapman,
IT Manager at Hurst Plastics, were business advisors to a group
of youngsters at South Holderness Technology College in Hull.
The pair supported the group of Year 11 pupils – many of whom
have special education needs – as they set up and ran their
business. The business successfully produced a collection of
novelty hanging clip boards - made out of waste MDF from the
Hurst factory - which were sold through various school events,
to the general public and at a Young Enterprise trade fair.
As part of the company’s drive to invest in the development
of young local people, Hurst has also taken on three young
apprentices who are working within Hurst’s goods inwards/
warehousing, composite door manufacture and sales and
customer service departments.
Darren adds: “People development is important to Hurst and
young people are a valuable asset to the business. We are very
pleased to have appointed three enthusiastic apprentices who
have already embarked on our development programme. We will
continue to bring in fresh, new recruits and equip them with the
important skills that will help them to progress their careers.”

THE HEAT IS ON!
W
ith the race for market leadership hotting up among the
major Composite Door suppliers in the industry Richard
Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for Truedor from IG
Doors tells us why the company has now added a fire door to its
offering for the trade.
“The composite door sector is a fantastic place to be at the minute.
The demand for products has never been higher and with that
comes an expectation that the leading companies in the sector will
continue to push the boundaries and expand their range”.
“For us as IG Doors in our 35th year of making Composite Doors
the logical step was to make our fire door – which we have been
manufacturing successfully for 25 years – available to the trade”.
“Our fire door comes with the same great technical pedigree as the
rest of our products. It goes without saying that it is fully certified by
an independent body as an FD30 which includes as standard smoke
seals and fire seals. It is also an outstanding performer in terms of
sound insulation.”
“But what people perhaps don’t fully realise is that it also comes with
many of the same features you would expect on ‘standard’ composite
doors. It can be fitted with a letter plate for front doors – again fitted
with certified and appropriate seals – it comes in a range of colours
and styles; there is a range of glazing options, and it can have fully
matching top lights and side lights”.
“It also comes with a range of hardware options so that a consumer
can have choices as they do when choosing a door from our standard
Truedor range”.
“With more and more residential owners choosing flats and
apartments over traditional homes the market for fire doors is
growing all the time. They still want the same opportunity to
enhance their homes as people in traditional two storey housing and
a composite fire door gives them that option. The benefit for us that
comes from manufacturing and selling this type of door for over 25
years is that we know it works and that it is proven in the market
place. For us it is entirely the right time to launch it into the trade
market to support our customers”.
“So now not only do we have an outstanding range of aesthetically
pleasing and contemporary styles with great customer options
in terms of colour choice, hardware range, glazing and threshold
options, but we also have something which is technically very
different too”.
“It is the latest, but by no means will it be the last product to be added
to our range and highlights the point that demand and expectation
since we entered the trade market a little under a year ago has been
phenomenal. It fully justifies our decision to enter the trade market,
and reinforces our belief that the industry is looking for a new player
of significant size to offer the range, and the service, it craves”.
All Truedor products are available to order on-line via:
www.truedor.co.uk.
The benefit for us that
comes from manufacturing
and selling this type of door
for over 25 years is that we
know it works and that it is
proven in the market place.

PVCu bi-fold beats
aluminium counterparts
A
n independent testing and certification
company has launched its own stringent
new scheme to tackle the reputation
of poor quality bi-folding doors in the
marketplace. Despite other brands – including
aluminium door sets –failing the exacting test
requirements, the PVCu Liniar ModLok™ bi-
fold is the first to successfully pass.
The Folding Sliding Door Scheme has been
devised by Build Check to raise the bar and
bring a greater degree of excellence and
reliability to a product that is still increasing in
popularity, in spite of some negative publicity
from some homeowners who have been the
victims of inferior installations.
Many aluminium systems, often perceived
as much stronger and more durable than its
PVCu equivalent, have so far fallen short of
the mark during these tests - whereas the
Liniar ModLok™ bi-fold has passed with flying
colours to disprove a common misconception.
Established in 2004, Build Check operates
throughout the UK and Europe and has gone
from strength-to-strength to become a highly
respected provider within the marketplace,
operating a management and quality system
conforming to ISO/IEC 17025 (Testing) and
BS EN 17065 (Product Certification) and
accredited by UKAS and the BFRC.

Richard Bate, Build Check’s Technical Director,
explains why they started the scheme: “There
are a lot of poor quality bi-folding doors
available out there at the moment. We decided
to launch this scheme to assist homeowners in
being able to choose a product that would be
robust and fit for purpose.
“This makes sense for companies too. If they
can provide a quality product then it will save
them time and money in the long run on call-
outs, repairs and replacement parts.
“We set the scheme up in August 2014 but
have been unable to publicise it as we have
been waiting for a product to successfully pass
our stringent requirements – and we’re very
pleased that the Liniar ModLok™ bi-fold door
is the first to achieve that.”
There are three main sections to the test. Each
product is put through 5,000 cycles by Build
Check’s articulated robot, weather tested to
800 pascals (a wind speed of more than 80mph)
and able to achieve a minimum U-value of 1.8.
“We’ve put several other bi-folding doors
through the test, including aluminium doors
as well as PVCu – and Liniar was the first to
pass,” says Richard.“People might be surprised
to hear that some of the doors did not even
achieve 10% of the required cycles!
“Our whole intention for this scheme is that
it will be difficult to pass. There would be no
point in launching it unless it was going to
encourage companies to raise their standards
and aim for their product to be the best.
“Now that Liniar has achieved the required
test levels, it can cascade the evidence to its
fabricators. The fabricator will then be able to
apply to Build Check to join the certification
scheme and, subject to successful auditing
of their quality system, manufacturing,
installation processes and documentation, will
be able to use the Build Check Folding Sliding
Door Scheme mark.
“It’s taken until now for us to be able to
announceasuccessfulcandidatebutwebelieve
that Liniar’s success will set the benchmark for
other companies to aspire to.”
Chris Armes, Liniar’s Design and Development
Manager, is delighted with the news.
“We’re very proud that the Liniar ModLok™
bi-fold is the first to successfully meet the
testing requirements of the scheme. Obviously
we have tested it excessively ourselves and
have every confidence in the product. We’ve
already put the bi-fold through its paces
with our own in-house robot, which achieved
127,800 full opening cycles – but it’s good for
its durability and robustness to be confirmed
by an independent party.
“We’ll now be looking to increase the scope of
our accreditation by expanding the dimensions
of future test specimens and we look forward
to continue working alongside Build Check.”

EVOLVE VS ARE EVEN MORE AUTHENTIC FOR
CONSERVATIONPROJECTS
S
ynseal’s popular Evolve VS sliding sash has been
improved with the addition of a new deep bottom
rail design option, to provide an even greater
degree of authenticity for heritage and conservation
project applications.
Standard Evolve vertical sliding sash windows feature
a slimline bottom rail 60mm in height to maximise
glass area and daylight, however a 100mm deep
bottom rail has previously been available as a special
manufacturing option by combining two extrusions.
Now a new ovolo deep bottom rail created from a
single extrusion, 100mm deep, is readily available
to cater for projects that require authentic timber-
mimicking PVC-U sliding sash windows, with the
added benefit of improved visual aesthetic appeal.
“Investment in a PVC-U extrusion tool to create a new
VS deep bottom rail ovolo profile was an easy decision
to make,” comments Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products
& Customer Service Director. “Visual authenticity is
a key factor in today’s marketplace. The improved
bottom rail complements other finely engineered
aesthetic details such as our run-through sash horns
and when considered in conjunction with the many
practical material advantages of PVC-U, our Evolve VS
heritage offering is a compelling specification.”

Why don't young people
see our industry as a part
of their career path?
L
ike many of you, I keep hearing that we need to find
a way to bring new people into the window, door and
glazing industry as the age profile across it continues
to increase. It is the same story in many other hands-on
industry sectors. It is almost a reflection of society in the
UK I guess where, by common consent, we have got an
‘ageing population’.
I’m not suggesting for one minute that the glazing industry
is past it – far from it – it remains vibrant, full of great
products, new innovations, and the opportunity for career
longevity; but one thing that does concern me is the lack
of young people coming into the sector as the first step on
their career path, and the lack of young people transferring
into it from other industries.
Career path development
Why does our industry not automatically attract young
people? Don’t school leavers see our industry as a viable
career? Is it perhaps because as an industry there hasn’t
been the employer backing for the available, structured
qualifications and formal training, preferring instead to
go for a less formal hands-on approach? Has the lack
of qualification implementation offered by the industry
become detrimental to attracting new blood? Do we as
an industry understand what today’s young people value in
terms of career-path development and are we offering it?
The truth is I don’t know the answer. What I do know is
this; investment in people is proven to deliver long term
benefits to the employer and the employee. Better training
leads to better motivated staff - staff who are better able
and better qualified to carry out their roles – and reduced
staff turnover. Ultimately this should translate into the
delivery of better quality and service to the end user which
of course should in turn bring more business.
Attracting young people
As many of you know, we here at GQA are passionate about
people development and recognition, and our qualifications,
allied to the introduction of the MTCs–Minimum Technical
Competencies – should be the perfect opportunity for the
industry to progress and ultimately to attract young people
to our industry who will then very much view it as a career
rather than just a job – there is a distinction.
I firmly believe that if the industry invests in training it will
get its rewards.
In the very near future we are going to be talking to key
players in the industry about forming partnerships and
developing programmes to help young entrants to our
industry to learn; we want to engage companies to become
ambassadors for training – maybe to provide facilities in
the shape of Learning Pods, to enable people to be trained
off the job and not just on it.
A new initiative from the industry
It is a subject I am going to return to regularly over the next
12 months. I want to see if we can offer a new initiative
as an industry which is as vibrant and attractive as the
industry itself, a scheme where an apprentice could start
with a two week block introduction programme hosted by
an Ambassador, followed by day-release training, where
the employer-developed programme will inform on the
industry, about the products and materials, about the job
that he or she is going to do; about Building Regulations
and the impact of Health and Safety as essential learning,
with practical activities at the heart of the day-release,
actual hands-on in a learning environment, honing
practical skills.
I see this as potentially a two-year programme, a real
structured learning experience which would give anyone
a good start into any practical industry; with the learning
process continuing through work.
What would all this give us? In my view it would give us:
1. An attractive and effective young person’s programme
into the industry.
2. An effective delivery programme for new entrants.
3. Ongoing practical and knowledge learning programme
4. An up-to-date workforce.
5. Government / Competent Person Scheme Compliance.
6. Reduced site rectifications / reduced callouts which =
reduced cost.
7. Improved Customer Satisfaction.
Maybe the ‘Learning Pod’ idea is feasible and we could
use this as the basis for an employer led Trailblazer
project aimed at designing apprenticeship standards and
assessment for our industry – if this is of interest to you
then get in touch with us – info@gqaqualifications.com /
01142 720033 – we will be starting industry discussions
soon. Mick Clayton is CEO of GQA Qualifications.

Thermal Ratings Reviewed
What Can Certass TRR Do for You?
W
ith The Installer focussing
this month’s issue on the
topic of Energy,we thought
we’d take an opportunity to remind
readers that there are a number of
elements to Certass; particularly the
Thermal Rating Register (TRR).
TRR provides a simple system to
demonstrate the energy efficiency of
varying window and door designs. It
uses a simple colour codedA-G rating,
similar to that seen on white goods.
The higher the rating, the better the
overall thermal efficiency and the
greater the savings consumers can
expect. TRR provides details of PVC-
U, timber and metal windows.
The Building Regulations require
replacement windows to be a
minimum of a ‘C’ rating.The rating of
windows not only takes into account
the amount of heat the window loses
directly but also the amount of air
that can escape through the frame
and the positive benefit of heat
energy gained from solar energy.
Much of the work of TRR is applied
to fabricators – with installers
simply purchasing finished goods
that have already been rated.
However, if an installer buys frames
from one company and glass from
another, they have to ensure that
the combination is rated. TRR has
a system that allows installers
operating in this way to comply
with their legal requirements. Thus,
belonging to TRR can give your
business a competitive edge as it
provides a cost effective system to
register your window designs. Our
rating processes are streamlined
to ensure a smooth registration
process.
Windows registered with CertassTRR
will receive an A-C rating and you
will be provided with certificates of
compliance. In addition your services
will be listed on the TRR website as
conforming to Building Regulations
where consumers are able to search
local installers by window rating and
framing material.
TRR Accredited Installer
Becoming a TRR Accredited Installer
not only allows you to demonstrate
Building Regulation compliance but
also provides marketing advantage.
Consumers are becoming more
aware of energy savings and are
familiar with the A-G rating already
in place on white goods. Using a
Window Energy Rating gives you
a marketing edge and can help
differentiate product lines based on
rating –‘A’ rated windows are usually
sold at a premium price.
People you know
Certass members will be reassured to
know that TRR is operated by Certass
staff you already know and trust. A
tightly integrated service allows TRR
to offer Certass members significant
savings over other Window Energy
Rating services. Even if you are not a
Certass member,TRR offers excellent
customer service and cost savings.
What information do we need to
provide to qualify as a TRR member?
This can vary dependent on the
scheme you are joining, but we will
always require a copy of the BSEN
1279 certificates from your glass
supplier. We may also require a copy
of the full simulation reports from
your frame supplier.

“We are delighted with the specialist services

would expect from an established market leader,
so no problems there, but what sets them apart is
their responsiveness and marketing support, such
as the Decorative Options literature. Products
are rarely out of stock, and the next day delivery
service is a big plus as well.”
Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead
adds: “It’s fantastic to partner with like-minded
companies such as Global Glass, whose philosophy
is to help their customers up sell by adding value.
Within the IGU market over recent years, increased
value has been generated predominantly by
improvement in technical performance with
rapidly lowering U-Values to the point where A+
ratings are now practically the norm. Decorative
glass, however, provides an additional way to add
value in the aesthetics of the unit, and as we know,
performance and aesthetics need not be mutually
exclusive. We understand that it is much more than
product alone, and we provide the full package,
including design, through our unique Glass Eye

Guardian in Europe launches BIM objects

B
uilding Information Modelling (BIM) is the
next generation of digital representation
for architectural projects and Guardian has
strived to meet the needs of a changing market,
with BIM objects created for all Guardian products
in Europe.
“The way architectural projects are being designed
and created is changing” states Volodymyr
Shkurenko, European Channel and Segment
Marketing Manager, “there is a growing need for
specified glass to be supported with BIM objects.
Staying ahead of these new innovative processes
is paramount to ensure we can provide the right
products and support required to meet the needs
of project design teams, from specification through
to construction”
Guardian’s BIM objects allow glass to be specified
either as a design material in its own right, or in
single, double or triple glazing, with data variations
to account for laminated glass and other glass
processes such as heat treatments.
The key products available for commercial
construction have been modelled from clear
annealed float to coated and laminated products
such as SunGuard and ClimaGuard. Other
decorative products have also been modelled such
as our SatinDeco.
Each of our BIM objects have been made available
in Revit and IFC format, which are the leading
systems for creating BIM projects.
To help architects, designers, and other BIM
professionals understand how our objects work in
the BIM environment a short demonstration video
has been produced to explain the use of Guardian
glass products as BIM objects.

MORLEY GLASS ADDS CONSUMER-FRIENDLY
CLEARSHIELD PROTECTION TO RANGE
S
ealed unit manufacturer Morley Glass &
Glazing has added ClearShield non-stick
protection from Ritec to its range of glazing
options, offering customers a low-maintenance
solution.
Ritec’s award-winning ClearShield System has
been specially developed for the renovation,
protection and maintenance of both new and
already installed glass.
Just like a non-stickfrying pan,ClearShield provides
a protective barrier for the surface of glass that
is much more effective than a coating. It cuts the
amount of window cleaning required by up to 70%
without affecting the transparency or solar gain (g
value) of the glass.
Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass &
Glazing, which is also the UK’s largest fabricator
of integral Uni-Blinds® using the market-leading
ScreenLine® systems, said: “We’re always looking
to enhance our range and offer our customers the
latest technological enhancements. This means
that they in turn can add value to their customer
offering. The ClearShield System from Ritec
complements our SGG BIOCLEAN self-cleaning
glass from Glassolutions which is already a hit
amongst our conservatory installers.”
ClearShield is a polymeric resin and, when
applied to ordinary glass, it cross-links to form a
strong chemical bond. ClearShield is completely
transparent, chemically inert, non-hazardous and
UV stable. Unlike a coating, ClearShield becomes
part of the glass so will not peel, flake or crack.
The result is low maintenance sealed units
featuring glass that prevents contaminants from
bonding to the surface and limits further damage
caused by corrosion and chemical attack. Dirt can
easily be removed using normal cleaning methods.
Morley Glass & Glazing is approved and fully
trained by Ritec to apply ClearShield. It is applied
to glass onsite for glass already installed or in the
factory onto new glass.

Liniar launches 'bible' for specifiers
L
iniar is delighted to announce the launch of its
brand new, full colour, 94-page Specification
Guide – to fantastic feedback from customers,
architects and specifiers alike.
The long-awaited book contains all of the information
that anyone could possibly need to know about
specifying the innovative company’s windows and
doors, making it the perfect ‘bible’ for the Liniar range.
“It’s been a lot of hard work to put together,” says Chris
Armes, Liniar’s Design and Development Manager,“But
it was all well worth it once everyone saw the final
product.
“When we started to compile all of the information,
along with the images to illustrate each section, we
knew it would be a painstaking process. We believe
that using full isometric renders of our profile, created
with 3D software, lifts the images right off the page
and gives architects a much better representation of
how our products would fit into their projects.
“It’s been a real team effort to complete the project,
but it wouldn’t have been possible without all of the
hard work of one of our designers in particular – Nikki
really has put her heart and soul into it and made the
finished product look amazing.
“It really has been her baby for the last few months –
and customer feedback so far has been outstanding, so
it was well worth the effort!”
Packed from cover to cover, the Specification Guide
contains full details of Liniar lead-free PVCu products,
including in-depth technical data and measurements
on every different window and door in the range,
ancillaries, case studies and follow up information.
Architect Gary Parker from Parker Design Associates,
was impressed with the content, commenting:
“At last, a guide that is both interesting and extremely
informative, an essential reference that all architects
and designers should find invaluable!”
An online version of the Liniar Specification Guide can
be viewed in book format here, LiniarSpecGuide and
specifiers can order their own free hard copy at www.

Machining
Haffner's TT405 computerised saw
adding value in more ways than one
M
ore and more fabricators are seeing the
benefits of investment in Haffner’s TT405
computerised saw. One such fabricator is
West Bromwich’s Turford Brothers Ltd and Dave
Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner, says he is
seeing a common theme in the companies that are
choosing Haffner.“We make their lives a lot easier,”
he says.“Not only can we supply all the machinery
they need we can also give them a good market
price for their old machinery and take it off their
hands. It makes it easy for them to move forward
with new technology.”
It’s clear to see why companies such as Turford
Brothers decide to invest in the TT405. It’s a
double cut saw for PVCu and aluminium profiles
up to 70mm which gives it great flexibility. One
of the key benefits is its easy to use touch screen
technology which can be operated via USB data
control or a network connection. You can pivot the
saw heads from 45 to 90 degrees and set up point
to point cutting via the computer, eliminating
profile tolerance and improving quality.
The machine is simple to set up and makes cutting
different styles and profiles much more efficient.
That’s because, unlike conventional saws, the
TT405 cuts inwards, which means there is no need
to program additions or offsets for every type of
profile, saving time and money. It also means you
only need to set the automatic transom positioner
once and all profiles are covered.
It comes equipped with a small cut facility that
ensures the profile is automatically cut before
being automatically repositioned for its second
cut. The minimum cut size is 270mm, with smaller
cuts being achievable manually.
Finally, the TT405 has several key safety features,
including the double cut facility, two hand
operation and automatic guarding.
Like all new Haffner machines, the TT405 comes
with a two year parts and labour warranty and
finance can be arrange subject to status.
All in all it’s hardly surprising that the TT405 is
proving more and more popular with fabricators!

ynseal has invested in a 6th PVC-U profile
lamination machine to further expand
foil finishing capabilities at the company’s
main production headquarters in Huthwaite,
Nottinghamshire.

  • 5. April 2015 April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv |GLAZING 5 S ynseal is proud to introduce Celsius solid roof – a new and innovative system that employs a structural framework of timber components with environmentally- friendly Envirotile external roof tiles and cappings to create a truly warm solid roof construction, with no possibility of cold bridging. “At Synseal we have been monitoring competitor solid roofing products for a while and the market is now ready for our CelsAius solid roof,” says Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products & Customer Service Director. “Sitting neatly alongside our exclusive Celsius performance glass, our new solid roof solution can be summed up in just two words: thermal excellence.” At the heart of the system are thermally-efficient structural insulated panels (SIPs), enabling Celsius solid roof to achieve a pitched roof U-value of 0.18 W/m2K for compliance in England and Wales. The U-value of 0.15 W/m2K for compliance in Scotland is achieved by fitting insulated plasterboard to line and finish the solid roof interior. “Selecting the right supply partners to complement our Synseal Envirotile was key to the success of Celsius solid roof and with structural insulated panels (SIPs) from Kingspan TEK Building Systems, fixings from Rapierstar and optional roof windows from VELUX we have sourced the very best products to construct a well-engineered system of the highest quality,” comments Synseal’s Head of R&D, Phil Parry. Synseal Envirotile external roofing components are injection moulded to Synseal’s exact specifications from 100% recycled polypropylene. Precision manufactured and lightweight, each single Envirotile has a low profile chamfered front- leading edge with an aesthetically pleasing riven finish, is 12mm in thickness, weighs just 610 grams and is extremely simple to fix yet performs exceptionally, securely locking into adjacent tiles without any need for battening to form a quick-fitting and fully integrated roof covering. A single mechanical fixing point at the head in addition to the innovative interlocking design ensures that Synseal Envirotiles fit securely and easily, ready to withstand wind and weather. Envirotiles are 80% lighter than standard concrete tiles, weighing 8.4kg per square metre in contrast with cement or natural slate roof tile products that typically weigh 50 kg per square metre. Available in a choice of 3 popular and appealing colours: Black, Brown or Terracotta, the interlocking Envirotiles are self-draining, self- ventilating and branded with the Synseal logo for ease of identification. The single or double Envirotiles are easy to handle and cut on site for a precision finish at concealed hip or valley roof edge intersections. In addition to single and double roof tiles, the Synseal Envirotile range includes an elevated and interlocking ventilated ridge cap, radius end/apex cover, hip, hip end cap, gable end cap, dry verge, tile starter trim and push-fit screw cap cover to ensure a high quality aesthetic finish for each Celsius solid roof. Fully approved and registered by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), Celsius solid roof is available for existing glazed conservatory roof replacements or new build applications in Lean-To, Georgian, Gable and Victorian building extension styles. Synseal’s Roofing Technical Manager Neville Gleed has been the driving force behind the product development, overseeing all the key design stages including component prototyping and trial site installation of the full system to ensure that every detail of Celsius solid roof is perfect and ready for launch. “Our aim has been to create the best-looking, most thermally- efficient and easiest-to-fit solid roof on the market today,” says Neville, “while at the same time delivering full compliance with Building Regulations for new or retro-fit applications. Speed of installation is essential, because on site time = money.” Unlike rival systems which employ aluminium rafters, aluminium ridge beams, aluminium eaves ring beams, aluminium valleys and aluminium box gutters similar in design to glazed conservatory roofs, Celsius solid roof is a truly warm roof, featuring all timber construction without any metallic “cold spots”. Alan Green, Product Support Engineer at Synseal sums it up neatly: “As product designer, my brief was to achieve improved installed thermal performance using proven materials with no inherent design weaknesses to eradicate cold bridging. Our Celsius solid roof is truly warm to provide building extensions that homeowners will be able to use in comfort, 365 days a year.” For more infomation please visit: www.synseal.com SYNSEAL LAUNCHES THE HIGH PERFORMANCE CELSIUSSOLIDROOF
  • 6. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv6 GLAZING Editors Corner BFRC licence holders are reminded that suppliers of their sealed units have a legal obligation to comply. Warning on Compliance The British Fenestration Ratings Council’s (BFRC) advice concerns BS EN 1279 Glass in Buildings: Insulating Glass Units. It makes clear that this is not a new requirement. Since the 1 July 2013 it has been mandatory for sealed unit manufacturers to meet the requirement of the Construction Products Regulation (2013) and subsequent CE Marking. It is a legal requirement for unit manufacturers to declare the performance of their products. As such a sealed unit supplier should be able to provide you with documentary evidence to confirm the product has been tested appropriately. All sealed units must meet the requirements of Part 2 of BS En 1279. However, if purchasing gas filled sealed units, a supplier must be able to demonstrate that they have passed BS EN 1279 Part 3. It is not acceptable to claim the sealed unit complies with BS EN 1279 when it is undergoing test, as the outcome is unknown. As the supplier of the window you have a responsibility to ensure that the IGUs used within your windows comply. • 7. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv7 GLAZING Editors Corner Change in the Building Regulations could mean that manufacturers and installers that are unable to demonstrate that products they are supplying meet PAS24 : 2012, will be locked out of the new build market with immediate effect. T he amendment to the Building Regulations were rubber-stamped by Parliament at the end of March and make PAS24:2012 or Secured by Design (SBD), the minimum standards for window and door security in all new homes. It is argued by Sliders UK, manufacturer and fabricator of SBD patio doors,bi-folding doors and composite doors, that this will mean that anyone who is unable to demonstrate that the product that they are supplying meets requirements under the new Building Regulations, will be immediately ‘locked out’ of the new build sector. “We welcome the new regulations as driving higher standards in home security and increased professionalism within our industry,” commented Ian Longbottom, Managing Director, Sliders UK.“What is less positive is that the industry has been slow to recognise the impact of these changes.” Mr Longbottom warned that many manufacturers and installers had “slept-walked” into regulatory change and could pay a significant price, for doing so. “There are manufacturers and installers who have slept-walked into change and as something which has the potential to close both out of the new build sector, the ramifications are huge, unless they now urgently review their supply chain.” The Building Regulations & (Amendment) Regulations 2015 became law on the 27 March and follows what was meant to have been widespread consultation on the Housing Standard Review (HSR). This closed in November 2014 and critically, as the foundation for regulatory changes, it recommended that water efficiency, accessibility and security, should be nationally defined and assessed under Building Control, not by planners or funders. Approved Document Q of the Second HSR Consultation (now ‘Part Q Security’ of the Building Regulations) states that ‘doorsets should be manufactured to a design which has been shown to meet the requirements of PAS24 : 2012 or be designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of PAS24….doorsets demonstrating compliance with the police SBD initiative will also meet the provisions of this Approved Document.’ The amendment to Building Regulations applies immediately but will not be enforced until the Change that TakesthePAS autumn. “We have always seen security as the critical factor in our product range irrespective of the market they’re in, offering an SBD composite, bi-fold or inline- sliding door, delivers immediate commercial advantage,” said Mr Longbottom. “But now there is a real regulatory driver towards PAS24 : 2012 products and that is going to deliver a step-change in the industry’s approach.” The Building Regulations & (Amendment) Regulations 2015 became law on the 27 March and follows what was meant to have been widespread consultation on the Housing Standard Review (HSR).”
  • 8. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv8 GLAZING Editors Corner GGF urges glass and glazing businesses to understand implications of Consumer Rights Act 2015 Be a Scout & Be Prepared T he Act is a major part of the government’s reform of UK consumer law and it is claimed that it will boost the economy by £4 billion over the next 10 years by streamlining complicated law from eight pieces of legislation into one. Although the Glass and Glazing Federation admits to failing to get any of its recommendations adopted in the original Bill, it is committed to informing its members of the ramifications before the law comes into force at the beginning of this October. The principal changes that need to be recognised are: • What should happen when goods are faulty. • Unfair te rms in a contract. • What happens when a business is acting in a way that is not competitive. • Written notice for routine inspections to be given by public enforcers, such as Trading Standards. • Greater flexibility for public enforcers to respond to breaches of consumer law, such as seeking redress for consumers who have suffered harm. As well as these changes there are two new areas of law covering: • What should happen when digital content is faulty – the Act now gives consumers a clear right to repair or replacement. • How services should match up to what has been agreed and what should happen when not, or when they are not provided with reasonable care and skill, e.g. giving some money back if it is not practical to bring the service into line with what was agreed. “The new Consumer Rights Act will have far reaching consequences for all companies in our industry and I’d urge every company to be well prepared for the impact,” stated Brian Smith, Home Improvement Director, GGF. “The main concern is how the Act will introduce a ‘short term right to reject’ of a default 30 days for consumers to reject faulty goods, rather than continuing with the current ‘reasonable period’.” The GGF has expressed its concerns to the Department of Business, Skills and Innovation (BIS) that this could create problems for the domestic replacement glazing industry when consumers try to reject windows and doors which have been installed. The Federation has arranged for a presentation by a Trading Standards Lead Officer, entitled Likely effect the new Act will have on our industry at the GGF Joint Window and Door Group and Conservatory Association meeting at the end of April in Solihull, Midlands to which all members are welcome. Further presentations by GGF staff to members around the regions will then follow during the months up to October before implementation of the Act. The survey questioned more than 1,000 product manufacturers, contractors, architects, house builders, developers and suppliers from around the industry, asking for their thoughts on policies affecting the construction industry. The overwhelming majority replied that they do not feel the interests of the industry have been addressed by the election campaigns, with only 29% stating that construction has received adequate political attention. When asked which party would be best for the industry if it comes to power, the Conservatives demonstrated a clear lead with 54% of the vote. The results place Labour well behind at 30%,while the Green Party has pushed ahead of the Liberal Democrats, coming in at 6% and 4% respectively. UKIP managed to claim 4% of the vote, with SNP and Plaid Cymru jointly accounting for the remaining 2%. Despite the positive indication for the Conservatives, the survey also appeared to reveal a desire for political change with 72% stating that a change in government would have a positive or neutral impact on the construction industry and just 28% replying that this would have ‘negative consequences’. • 10. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv10 GLAZING General Section ONS stats don't stack up for thewindow industry T he statistics don’t appear to stack up for the window industry in the newly published report from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on the size and performance of the UK low carbon economy, according to Andy Jones, Managing Director at Edgetech UK, a Quanex company. “The report states that in 2013 (the latest dates included in the report) total turnover for the manufacture and supply of energy efficient windows and doors is £2.8 billion, which we believe to be about right,” says Andy. “It’s the supporting figures that don’t stack up. The ONS report states that there are only 180 companies engaged in direct activities for the manufacture and supply of energy efficient windows and doors with 17,500 people employed in the sector. We believe that considerably more companies are involved and that a much higher number of people are employed. “With the report putting £20 million for investment, this figure too looks unrealistically low. Because we cannot reconcile these figures with what we know, we are writing to the ONS to get further clarification of the numbers included in the report.” The section on energyefficient products shows windows and doors ranks third, taking 17 percent of the total. Insulation is in the top slot with 34 percent of market share. Other products included are energy efficient lighting, heat recovery and ventilation, energy controls and control systems, and sustainable architecture and buildings. “But,” adds Andy, “one thing that’s very clear is 4 out of 6 product categories included in the ONS report are eligible for reduced VAT at 5 percent. Lighting and energy efficient windows and doors are the only products that have 20 percent VAT added to them. If the Government is really serious about creating a low carbon economy it needs to support all UK based companies manufacturing and supplying energy efficient products. “In 2008 Edgetech was the first company in the industry to bring the argument to Government in a petition. It was debated in parliament and included in Hansard, the record of every debate for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The petition declared that substantial energy savings, and consequential environmental benefits, could be achieved with the use of energy efficienct products and that the Government should therefore reduce VAT on such products. “When the General Election is over, we will be lobbying our local MP again to look again at supporting reduced rate VAT. Making the most of the Network’s unrivalled marketing support, the company turned to its Web Toolsofferingtocreateaninstant-quote-generating price engine for the Frames Conservatories Direct website. Managing Director Adrian Lewis explains: “The price engine has proved a massive aid to our sales process. We receive about 15% of sales enquiries via the website and, of all our lead-generating activities, the price engine boasts the highest conversion rate-currently standing at around 47%. “The double glazing industry has long been plagued by a bad reputation, inherited from the unscrupulous traders of the 1980s and ‘90s. We’re proud to be part of Network VEKA – an organisation established to restore confidence in the industry – and we’ve found that customers love the independence that the price engine offers when researching a quote. It also gives a great first impression of our company as we are able to give an indication of price upfront. “Consumers are increasingly going online for all sorts of purchases–from low-cost items like music and books to life-changing investments like cars and homes. Customers want the buying process to work for them and, using the price engine, they get just that. There’s no need leave the comfort of home, no pressure from sales consultants or telemarketers, and no waiting around for your quote. “The interface couldn’t be simpler, guiding users through style, size, material and colour options to arrive at a ‘ballpark’ figure for the work they’d like done. When we then discuss the quote further – over the phone or in person, at our showroom or their home – we know there’s a starting point that the customer is comfortable with. The first call – made within 24 hours of a quote - is always very positive and ‘warm’ as customers already have a good feeling about our business.” Adrian describes howFrames Conservatories Direct has used the price engine in its marketing efforts: “With a price-driven campaign such as a sale, we direct customers straight to the price engine from the ‘sale’ page of our website as it’s clear, in those cases, that bargain prices are at the forefront of the user’s mind. In more product or benefit-driven campaigns – energy efficiency or added security, for example–we’ll use the online quote generator as one of several available calls-to-action. “Some of the negative feelings customers have about home improvement projects can be overcome by experimenting with the online price engine. We’ve found that making it a lead feature in our advertising has met with great responses. In fact, through customer feedback, it’s clear that it’s a hit overall!” Companies interested in learning more about Network VEKA’s package of Web Tools and how they can boost business can view a series of helpful videos at the organisation’s Toolbox website, here: www.networkvekatools.co.uk NetworkVEKAhas theonlinetoolsfor thejobsaysFrames Conservatories Direct

What I particularly like about them is that the system automatically uploads our name, address, contact details and logo, so we can order a print run of bespoke brochures that are clearly ‘ours’ – there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ overprinting. Best of all, it’s all done for us – it couldn’t be easier! Our business is presented as having the support of The VEKA UK Group and,for anyone who knows about their leading position in the industry, that endorsement can only be a good thing!” The Marketing Hub offers everything an installer could need to present their business in its most professional light. From showroom stands and vehicle liveries to press adverts and vouchers, all items have been professionally designed by an award-winning marketing agency, meaning Approved Installers forgo significant costs while achieving enviable results. Amy Grundy,National Sales Manager for the Approved Installer Scheme adds: “M&M’s recent successes offer further proof, if any were needed, that this package of support really works for businesses. There’s no charge to join – all we ask is that companies supply CE-Marked products, manufactured by an Approved Fabricator, installed by an MTC-qualified technician and covered by an insurance-backed guarantee. “As just one tier of support offered by The VEKA UK Group (we also boast the industry’s leading installer organisation, Network VEKA), the Approved Installer Scheme is already registering fantastic results. We can’t wait to see where M&M’s exploration of the materials available will lead them next!” If you’d like to find out more, visit: www.vekauk.com/approvedinstaller for details.

In keeping with its remit to bring a breath of fresh air to industry awards, NFA laid on a series of driving experiences at the Cheshire race track. Neil Parsonson, Database Manager of Windowbase, was invited as a main sponsor of the awards – and kindly invited Tom Rigby, Business Development Manager of sister company MRA Marketing, to go along too. After some instruction in the relevant techniques and a few practice laps, the three events - Caterham driving, Land Rover Defender off-road and Toyota Rally car racing - were timed and an overall ranking decided. Much to his delight Neil came in joint third – which he won’t let Tom forget in a hurry! (Let’s just say Tom didn’t trouble the top 10). “We had a really enjoyable day,” says Neil. “The National Fenestration Awards promised to break with tradition and they certainly did that with this Awards Ceremony. We’re looking forward to seeing NFA grow and expand and we’ll be sponsoring them again for 2015. I’m now waiting to see what they come up with next year that beats this!” www.fenestrationawards.co.uk Events

  • 37. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv37 GLAZING Doors THE HEAT IS ON! W ith the race for market leadership hotting up among the major Composite Door suppliers in the industry Richard Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for Truedor from IG Doors tells us why the company has now added a fire door to its offering for the trade. “The composite door sector is a fantastic place to be at the minute. The demand for products has never been higher and with that comes an expectation that the leading companies in the sector will continue to push the boundaries and expand their range”. “For us as IG Doors in our 35th year of making Composite Doors the logical step was to make our fire door – which we have been manufacturing successfully for 25 years – available to the trade”. “Our fire door comes with the same great technical pedigree as the rest of our products. It goes without saying that it is fully certified by an independent body as an FD30 which includes as standard smoke seals and fire seals. It is also an outstanding performer in terms of sound insulation.” “But what people perhaps don’t fully realise is that it also comes with many of the same features you would expect on ‘standard’ composite doors. It can be fitted with a letter plate for front doors – again fitted with certified and appropriate seals – it comes in a range of colours and styles; there is a range of glazing options, and it can have fully matching top lights and side lights”. “It also comes with a range of hardware options so that a consumer can have choices as they do when choosing a door from our standard Truedor range”. “With more and more residential owners choosing flats and apartments over traditional homes the market for fire doors is growing all the time. They still want the same opportunity to enhance their homes as people in traditional two storey housing and a composite fire door gives them that option. The benefit for us that comes from manufacturing and selling this type of door for over 25 years is that we know it works and that it is proven in the market place. For us it is entirely the right time to launch it into the trade market to support our customers”. “So now not only do we have an outstanding range of aesthetically pleasing and contemporary styles with great customer options in terms of colour choice, hardware range, glazing and threshold options, but we also have something which is technically very different too”. “It is the latest, but by no means will it be the last product to be added to our range and highlights the point that demand and expectation since we entered the trade market a little under a year ago has been phenomenal. It fully justifies our decision to enter the trade market, and reinforces our belief that the industry is looking for a new player of significant size to offer the range, and the service, it craves”. • 38. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv38 GLAZING Doors PVCu bi-fold beats aluminium counterparts A n independent testing and certification company has launched its own stringent new scheme to tackle the reputation of poor quality bi-folding doors in the marketplace. Despite other brands – including aluminium door sets –failing the exacting test requirements, the PVCu Liniar ModLok™ bi- fold is the first to successfully pass. The Folding Sliding Door Scheme has been devised by Build Check to raise the bar and bring a greater degree of excellence and reliability to a product that is still increasing in popularity, in spite of some negative publicity from some homeowners who have been the victims of inferior installations. Many aluminium systems, often perceived as much stronger and more durable than its PVCu equivalent, have so far fallen short of the mark during these tests - whereas the Liniar ModLok™ bi-fold has passed with flying colours to disprove a common misconception. Established in 2004, Build Check operates throughout the UK and Europe and has gone from strength-to-strength to become a highly respected provider within the marketplace, operating a management and quality system conforming to ISO/IEC 17025 (Testing) and BS EN 17065 (Product Certification) and accredited by UKAS and the BFRC. • 39. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv39 GLAZING Doors Richard Bate, Build Check’s Technical Director, explains why they started the scheme: “There are a lot of poor quality bi-folding doors available out there at the moment. We decided to launch this scheme to assist homeowners in being able to choose a product that would be robust and fit for purpose. “This makes sense for companies too. If they can provide a quality product then it will save them time and money in the long run on call- outs, repairs and replacement parts. “We set the scheme up in August 2014 but have been unable to publicise it as we have been waiting for a product to successfully pass our stringent requirements – and we’re very pleased that the Liniar ModLok™ bi-fold door is the first to achieve that.” There are three main sections to the test. Each product is put through 5,000 cycles by Build Check’s articulated robot, weather tested to 800 pascals (a wind speed of more than 80mph) and able to achieve a minimum U-value of 1.8. “We’ve put several other bi-folding doors through the test, including aluminium doors as well as PVCu – and Liniar was the first to pass,” says Richard.“People might be surprised to hear that some of the doors did not even achieve 10% of the required cycles! “Our whole intention for this scheme is that it will be difficult to pass. There would be no point in launching it unless it was going to encourage companies to raise their standards and aim for their product to be the best. “Now that Liniar has achieved the required test levels, it can cascade the evidence to its fabricators. The fabricator will then be able to apply to Build Check to join the certification scheme and, subject to successful auditing of their quality system, manufacturing, installation processes and documentation, will be able to use the Build Check Folding Sliding Door Scheme mark. “It’s taken until now for us to be able to announceasuccessfulcandidatebutwebelieve that Liniar’s success will set the benchmark for other companies to aspire to.” Chris Armes, Liniar’s Design and Development Manager, is delighted with the news. “We’re very proud that the Liniar ModLok™ bi-fold is the first to successfully meet the testing requirements of the scheme. Obviously we have tested it excessively ourselves and have every confidence in the product. We’ve already put the bi-fold through its paces with our own in-house robot, which achieved 127,800 full opening cycles – but it’s good for its durability and robustness to be confirmed by an independent party. “We’ll now be looking to increase the scope of our accreditation by expanding the dimensions of future test specimens and we look forward to continue working alongside Build Check.” For more information on Build Check go to: www.buildcheck.co.uk or call: 01494 452713. Standard Evolve vertical sliding sash windows feature a slimline bottom rail 60mm in height to maximise glass area and daylight, however a 100mm deep bottom rail has previously been available as a special manufacturing option by combining two extrusions. Now a new ovolo deep bottom rail created from a single extrusion, 100mm deep, is readily available to cater for projects that require authentic timber- mimicking PVC-U sliding sash windows, with the added benefit of improved visual aesthetic appeal. “Investment in a PVC-U extrusion tool to create a new VS deep bottom rail ovolo profile was an easy decision to make,” comments Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products & Customer Service Director. “Visual authenticity is a key factor in today’s marketplace. • 43. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv43 GLAZING Certification Why don't young people see our industry as a part of their career path? L ike many of you, I keep hearing that we need to find a way to bring new people into the window, door and glazing industry as the age profile across it continues to increase. It is the same story in many other hands-on industry sectors. It is almost a reflection of society in the UK I guess where, by common consent, we have got an ‘ageing population’. I’m not suggesting for one minute that the glazing industry is past it – far from it – it remains vibrant, full of great products, new innovations, and the opportunity for career longevity; but one thing that does concern me is the lack of young people coming into the sector as the first step on their career path, and the lack of young people transferring into it from other industries. Career path development Why does our industry not automatically attract young people? Don’t school leavers see our industry as a viable career? Is it perhaps because as an industry there hasn’t been the employer backing for the available, structured qualifications and formal training, preferring instead to go for a less formal hands-on approach? Has the lack of qualification implementation offered by the industry become detrimental to attracting new blood? Do we as an industry understand what today’s young people value in terms of career-path development and are we offering it? The truth is I don’t know the answer. What I do know is this; investment in people is proven to deliver long term benefits to the employer and the employee. Better training leads to better motivated staff - staff who are better able and better qualified to carry out their roles – and reduced staff turnover. Ultimately this should translate into the delivery of better quality and service to the end user which of course should in turn bring more business. Attracting young people As many of you know, we here at GQA are passionate about people development and recognition, and our qualifications, allied to the introduction of the MTCs–Minimum Technical Competencies – should be the perfect opportunity for the industry to progress and ultimately to attract young people to our industry who will then very much view it as a career rather than just a job – there is a distinction. I firmly believe that if the industry invests in training it will get its rewards. In the very near future we are going to be talking to key players in the industry about forming partnerships and developing programmes to help young entrants to our industry to learn; we want to engage companies to become ambassadors for training – maybe to provide facilities in the shape of Learning Pods, to enable people to be trained off the job and not just on it. A new initiative from the industry It is a subject I am going to return to regularly over the next 12 months. I want to see if we can offer a new initiative as an industry which is as vibrant and attractive as the industry itself, a scheme where an apprentice could start with a two week block introduction programme hosted by an Ambassador, followed by day-release training, where the employer-developed programme will inform on the industry, about the products and materials, about the job that he or she is going to do; about Building Regulations and the impact of Health and Safety as essential learning, with practical activities at the heart of the day-release, actual hands-on in a learning environment, honing practical skills. I see this as potentially a two-year programme, a real structured learning experience which would give anyone a good start into any practical industry; with the learning process continuing through work. What would all this give us? In my view it would give us: 1. An attractive and effective young person’s programme into the industry. 2. An effective delivery programme for new entrants. 3. The veterans regularly play friendlies with other men’s health schemes and other football clubs such as Wigan Athletic, Scunthorpe United and Liverpool, and are about to take part in a tournament in Holland. The programme and the friendlies are a real motivator for men to get fit and keep fit; to be a part of a social network; and to have the opportunity to visit and play at other professional football grounds. Mick completed the healthy lifestyles programme himself in March 2014 and was keen for GQA to get more involved, “The programme is a great way for the over-35s to give themselves a kick in terms of their health and fitness, and sponsoring the purchase of the veteran’s strip was a great way to give something back to the programme”. “The programme’s link with the British Heart Foundation was also a big plus factor for us at GQA with our ex-CEO’s untimely passing in 2013 from heart related issues.” “I would encourage as many of our colleagues as possible in the window and door industry to get involved in these types of schemes. It is great fun but also delivers a serious point in that it provides a healthier lifestyle and a level of fitness which can only benefit us all in our increasingly busy day to day lives”. • 46. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv46 GLAZING Certification Thermal Ratings Reviewed What Can Certass TRR Do for You? W ith The Installer focussing this month’s issue on the topic of Energy,we thought we’d take an opportunity to remind readers that there are a number of elements to Certass; particularly the Thermal Rating Register (TRR). TRR provides a simple system to demonstrate the energy efficiency of varying window and door designs. It uses a simple colour codedA-G rating, similar to that seen on white goods. The higher the rating, the better the overall thermal efficiency and the greater the savings consumers can expect. TRR provides details of PVC- U, timber and metal windows. The Building Regulations require replacement windows to be a minimum of a ‘C’ rating. The rating of windows not only takes into account the amount of heat the window loses directly but also the amount of air that can escape through the frame and the positive benefit of heat energy gained from solar energy. Much of the work of TRR is applied to fabricators – with installers simply purchasing finished goods that have already been rated. However, if an installer buys frames from one company and glass from another, they have to ensure that the combination is rated. TRR has a system that allows installers operating in this way to comply with their legal requirements. Thus, belonging to TRR can give your business a competitive edge as it provides a cost effective system to register your window designs. Our rating processes are streamlined to ensure a smooth registration process. Windows registered with CertassTRR will receive an A-C rating and you will be provided with certificates of compliance. In addition your services will be listed on the TRR website as conforming to Building Regulations where consumers are able to search local installers by window rating and framing material. TRR Accredited Installer Becoming a TRR Accredited Installer not only allows you to demonstrate Building Regulation compliance but also provides marketing advantage. Consumers are becoming more aware of energy savings and are familiar with the A-G rating already in place on white goods. Using a Window Energy Rating gives you a marketing edge and can help differentiate product lines based on rating –‘A’ rated windows are usually sold at a premium price. People you know Certass members will be reassured to know that TRR is operated by Certass staff you already know and trust. A tightly integrated service allows TRR to offer Certass members significant savings over other Window Energy Rating services. Even if you are not a Certass member,TRR offers excellent customer service and cost savings. What information do we need to provide to qualify as a TRR member? This can vary dependent on the scheme you are joining, but we will always require a copy of the BSEN 1279 certificates from your glass supplier. We may also require a copy of the full simulation reports from your frame supplier. For more information call and ask our team about TRR membership on 01292 292703 or visit: www.certass.co.uk Certification

Steve Musgrave,Manufacturing Director at Synseal explains: “Around 5% of the IGUs we manufacture may contain decorative elements so we need to process these products as a special manufacturing operation, together with our volume IGU production. The majority of the product produced is rectangular and diamond patterns but the range provided by RegaLead caters for a wide range of applications including residential door lights, conservatory top lights and general casement and feature bay windows. We have also recently further enhanced our automated processes with the introduction of a CadRam resin application machine and Glass Eye plotter package. “We are delighted with the specialist services provided by RegaLead. Product quality is what you would expect from an established market leader, so no problems there, but what sets them apart is their responsiveness and marketing support, such as the Decorative Options literature. Products are rarely out of stock, and the next day delivery service is a big plus as well.” Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead adds: “It’s fantastic to partner with like-minded companies such as Global Glass, whose philosophy is to help their customers up sell by adding value. Within the IGU market over recent years, increased value has been generated predominantly by improvement in technical performance with rapidly lowering U-Values to the point where A+ ratings are now practically the norm. Decorative glass, however, provides an additional way to add value in the aesthetics of the unit, and as we know, performance and aesthetics need not be mutually exclusive. We understand that it is much more than product alone, and we provide the full package, including design, through our unique Glass Eye Package, and industry leading marketing support.” www.regalead.co.uk
  • 50. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv50 GLAZING Glass Guardian in Europe launches BIM objects to meet the needs of a changing market B uilding Information Modelling (BIM) is the next generation of digital representation for architectural projects and Guardian has strived to meet the needs of a changing market, with BIM objects created for all Guardian products in Europe. “The way architectural projects are being designed and created is changing” states Volodymyr Shkurenko, European Channel and Segment Marketing Manager, “there is a growing need for specified glass to be supported with BIM objects. Staying ahead of these new innovative processes is paramount to ensure we can provide the right products and support required to meet the needs of project design teams, from specification through to construction” Guardian’s BIM objects allow glass to be specified either as a design material in its own right, or in single, double or triple glazing, with data variations to account for laminated glass and other glass processes such as heat treatments. The key products available for commercial construction have been modelled from clear annealed float to coated and laminated products such as SunGuard and ClimaGuard. Other decorative products have also been modelled such as our SatinDeco. Each of our BIM objects have been made available in Revit and IFC format, which are the leading systems for creating BIM projects. To help architects, designers, and other BIM professionals understand how our objects work in the BIM environment a short demonstration video has been produced to explain the use of Guardian glass products as BIM objects. • 54. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv54 GLAZING Glass MORLEY GLASS ADDS CONSUMER-FRIENDLY CLEARSHIELD PROTECTION TO RANGE S ealed unit manufacturer Morley Glass & Glazing has added ClearShield non-stick protection from Ritec to its range of glazing options, offering customers a low-maintenance solution. Ritec’s award-winning ClearShield System has been specially developed for the renovation, protection and maintenance of both new and already installed glass. Just like a non-stickfrying pan,ClearShield provides a protective barrier for the surface of glass that is much more effective than a coating. It cuts the amount of window cleaning required by up to 70% without affecting the transparency or solar gain (g value) of the glass. Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass & Glazing, which is also the UK’s largest fabricator of integral Uni-Blinds® using the market-leading ScreenLine® systems, said: “We’re always looking to enhance our range and offer our customers the latest technological enhancements. This means that they in turn can add value to their customer offering. The ClearShield System from Ritec complements our SGG BIOCLEAN self-cleaning glass from Glassolutions which is already a hit amongst our conservatory installers.” ClearShield is a polymeric resin and, when applied to ordinary glass, it cross-links to form a strong chemical bond. ClearShield is completely transparent, chemically inert, non-hazardous and UV stable. Unlike a coating, ClearShield becomes part of the glass so will not peel, flake or crack. The result is low maintenance sealed units featuring glass that prevents contaminants from bonding to the surface and limits further damage caused by corrosion and chemical attack. Dirt can easily be removed using normal cleaning methods. Morley Glass & Glazing is approved and fully trained by Ritec to apply ClearShield. It is applied to glass onsite for glass already installed or in the factory onto new glass. For more information visit www.morleyglass.co.uk. BEFORE AFTER

  • 56. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv56 GLAZING Architecture / Specifiers Liniar launches 'bible' for specifiers L iniar is delighted to announce the launch of its brand new, full colour, 94-page Specification Guide – to fantastic feedback from customers, architects and specifiers alike. The long-awaited book contains all of the information that anyone could possibly need to know about specifying the innovative company’s windows and doors, making it the perfect ‘bible’ for the Liniar range. “It’s been a lot of hard work to put together,” says Chris Armes, Liniar’s Design and Development Manager,“But it was all well worth it once everyone saw the final product. “When we started to compile all of the information, along with the images to illustrate each section, we knew it would be a painstaking process. We believe that using full isometric renders of our profile, created with 3D software, lifts the images right off the page and gives architects a much better representation of how our products would fit into their projects. “It’s been a real team effort to complete the project, but it wouldn’t have been possible without all of the hard work of one of our designers in particular – Nikki really has put her heart and soul into it and made the finished product look amazing. “It really has been her baby for the last few months – and customer feedback so far has been outstanding, so it was well worth the effort!” Packed from cover to cover, the Specification Guide contains full details of Liniar lead-free PVCu products, including in-depth technical data and measurements on every different window and door in the range, ancillaries, case studies and follow up information. Architect Gary Parker from Parker Design Associates, was impressed with the content, commenting: “At last, a guide that is both interesting and extremely informative, an essential reference that all architects and designers should find invaluable!” An online version of the Liniar Specification Guide can be viewed in book format here, LiniarSpecGuide and specifiers can order their own free hard copy at www. LiniarSpecGuide.co.uk/PR. To accompany its Specification Guide, Liniar has also launched an online resource centre for specifiers and developers, containing a wide range of information and resources to assist with specifying Liniar profile. • 58. |April 2015 | www.mytrade.tv58 GLAZING Machining Haffner's TT405 computerised saw adding value in more ways than one M ore and more fabricators are seeing the benefits of investment in Haffner’s TT405 computerised saw. One such fabricator is West Bromwich’s Turford Brothers Ltd and Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner, says he is seeing a common theme in the companies that are choosing Haffner.“We make their lives a lot easier,” he says.“Not only can we supply all the machinery they need we can also give them a good market price for their old machinery and take it off their hands. It makes it easy for them to move forward with new technology.” It’s clear to see why companies such as Turford Brothers decide to invest in the TT405. It’s a double cut saw for PVCu and aluminium profiles up to 70mm which gives it great flexibility. One of the key benefits is its easy to use touch screen technology which can be operated via USB data control or a network connection. You can pivot the saw heads from 45 to 90 degrees and set up point to point cutting via the computer, eliminating profile tolerance and improving quality. The machine is simple to set up and makes cutting different styles and profiles much more efficient. That’s because, unlike conventional saws, the TT405 cuts inwards, which means there is no need to program additions or offsets for every type of profile, saving time and money. It also means you only need to set the automatic transom positioner once and all profiles are covered. It comes equipped with a small cut facility that ensures the profile is automatically cut before being automatically repositioned for its second cut. The minimum cut size is 270mm, with smaller cuts being achievable manually. Finally, the TT405 has several key safety features, including the double cut facility, two hand operation and automatic guarding. Like all new Haffner machines, the TT405 comes with a two year parts and labour warranty and finance can be arrange subject to status. All in all it’s hardly surprising that the TT405 is proving more and more popular with fabricators! www.haffnergb.com/murat-machinery
