ardware supplier VBH has recently appointed
business graduates Tyler Shutts and Zac Beattie
as Area Sales Representatives for the North
West and Southern regions respectively.
Tyler and Zac are undergoing an in-depth induction that
will see them sample all aspects of the VBH business
model, and undergo product training with VBH’s
technical team and with the company’s key supplier
partners. During the induction period the pair will be
shadowing VBH’s Area Sales Managers and meeting
many of the company’s customers.
Sales Manager – England & Wales Simon Monks stated
‘The time is right for us to reinforce our sales team
and we decided to look outside the industry for these
two regions. We interviewed a number of university
graduates and all were of a very high calibre.
‘However, Tyler and Zac stood out as both exhibited a
greatabilitytoretaininformationduringtherecruitment

likeable. We’re confident that the combination of these
three traits will be of huge benefit to VBH,Tyler and Zac
and, most importantly, to our customers.’

MILA DOES THE DOUBLE
It’s a double success for Mila who are nominated in
two categories at this year’s G-15 Awards.
As well as being named on the shortlist for the
Component Supplier of the Year Award for the fifth
year in succession, the hardware specialist is also
nominated in the Promotional Campaign of the Year
(Trade) category for its hugely successful launch of the
new ProSecure door hinge.
Mila’s Managing Director Richard Gyde said: “These
nominations are always a great testament to the hard
work of all of our team. We have won the Component
Supplier of the Year award on two previous occasions
and are delighted to be the only hardware supplier on
the shortlist this time, but this is our first ever marketing
nomination so it will be an exciting night for us.”
The ProSecure door hinge was Mila’s most successful
new product launch in recent years with forward orders
more than double the original target – much of which
can be attributed to the success of the memorable
marketing and sales support campaign focusing on the
speed of installation.

ROBNORMANEXPLAINSHOWVBHMAKESCOMPLIANCE
TO DOCUMENT Q VERY SIMPLE
It’s the subject that the industry’s been talking
about for some months and it’s finally here.
Much has already been written, but to recap, from
1st October window and doors installed in new
build properties in England and some of those
in Wales must comply with the requirements of
Building Regulations Approved Document Q.
The aim of the document is to increase the level
of security in NEW BUILD homes and in existing
buildings that have been converted into housing.
This is to be achieved by increasing the level of
security in windows and entrance doors. Document
Q does not affect replacement products.
It is down to the people responsible for the building
work, such as the designer, builder or installer, to
ensure that the work complies. Of course, they will
need documented proof from the fabricator to pass
on to Building Control, and failure to comply may
result in the building owner being served with an
enforcement notice.
Document Q is applicable to all new build/
conversion installations in England and those into
excepted energy buildings in Wales, regardless of
where the windows or doors are manufactured.
Conversely, products manufactured in England
and Wales do not have to comply with Document
Q if they are being installed outside of those two
countries.
As when any new guideline or legislation is
announced, there has been much gnashing of teeth
and confusion within the industry about what
Document Q means and what fabricators need to
do to comply.
VBH are producing a selection of Document Q
Compliance Packs that will support our fabricating
customers in achieving that compliance.
There are a number of ways to achieve compliance
and VBH can help in choosing the best route, but
in short, the windows/doors must be consistently
produced to a specification that has been tested
to, and passed, the PAS24:2012 security standard
or has achieved accredited product performance
certification.
Manufacturers producing bespoke timber windows
and doors will have to have their own products
tested or demonstrate compliance to Appendix B
of Document Q, which lays down a specification for
bespoke timber doorsets.
OntopoftheexistingPAS24orproductperformance
specs, Document Q also calls for a few additional
features such as the fitting of door viewers on main
entrance doors that do not feature clear glass or
do not have a glazed panel adjacent to the door
itself. There is also a requirement to fit a limiter or
chain to such doors, unless there is good reason
not to. The document advises that an example of
this is where a warden may need emergency access
|October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv10 GLAZING
Hardware
to residents in sheltered housing. In this case an
alternative means of caller identification such as
electronic audio-visual door entry system should
be fitted.
There are also added stipulations about the
maximum allowable letterplate aperture and a
requirement to fit a device to hinder fishing through
that aperture.
It all sounds complicated but it needn’t be, as we
at VBH have taken steps to make compliance to
Document Q very easy for our customers.
Our product portfolio of own brand greenteQ and
major market partners such as Maco, Roto and Yale,
among others, enables us to offer our customers
a tailored Document Q solution for all their
applications.
A large part of my job is to work with PVCu and
aluminium systems companies to make sure that
their fabricator network has access to hardware
when a new profile suite is launched, and to work
together for the good of our mutual customers
when new legislation is introduced. Document
Q has been high on the agenda at meetings with
many systems houses these past few months, as
you can imagine.
I mentioned the Compliance Pack a little earlier.
This is something that we’ve put together for users
of the profiles that we’ve been in dialogue with. In
short, it’s all you need to ensure that your windows
and doors comply.
We would love to hear from you to discuss how we
can help.

Trojan’s
Pegasus High
Security Window
Lock offers
uncompromising
security
www.trojan-hardware.com
T
he Trojan Group is renowned
for delivering innovative
products that perform
exceptionally well. This is perfectly
demonstrated in their Pegasus High
Security Window Lock which has
taken the market by storm since its
launch last year.
The Pegasus High Security Window
Lock has multi point locking and
guaranteed centre and corner
locking for additional security
with every installation. It has an
extended 20mm reverse locking
action which ensures the lock
provides enhanced engagement
and security. What’s more, when
windows are jemmy attacked, the
20mm locking actions intensify
rather than disengaging as is the
case on most window locks. The
strength of the security credentials
are demonstrated in the lock’s PAS
24 accreditation, when fitted as
part of a window assembly, which
ensures it meets the standards
of Document Q. Pegasus has also
achieved BBA accreditation as
further testament to the product’s
technical excellence, performance
and overall quality.
Trojan’s Tony Chadwick says, “The
Pegasus is packed with features
that are certain to appeal to
security-conscious homeowners
and the requirements for Document
Q as of the 1st October. It can be
seen as ‘more than just a lock’ and
is therefore a valuable addition to
salespeople’s armoury. We are not
surprised that sales of this product
continue to grow at an amazing
pace.”
The security features of the Pegasus
sit alongside a wealth of other
benefits that are certain to appeal
to fabricators and installers. It
is the original “one size lock fits
all windows”, so a single lock is
suitable for all sashes from 420mm
to 1300mm, giving valuable
economies of scale. It’s quick
and easy to install too because
the keeps are fitted identical in
centre and corner positions for
every application and gasket
compression can be adjusted up
to 0.75mm. Offset applications are
also achievable from the standard
product and the compact central
gearbox, which is just 65mm long,
means minimal routing is required.
The lock is manufactured using high
grade zinc alloy, grades 430 and
304 stainless steel and GF nylon
and has been independently tested
to EN1191 and PAS 24. Evidence of
the quality of lock is demonstrated
in its 10 year guarantee against
mechanical failure.
Tony concludes, “The Pegasus High
Security Window Lock delivers in all
areas: it has outstanding security
credentials while also offering
excellent cost savings.” And that’s
why the lock has joined other
products in Trojan’s portfolio as one
that adds value where it matters.

ruemans, the leading one-stop shop trade
supplier, has added Ultion as an upgrade cylinder,
and it’s already helping installer customers sell
more doors.
Managing Director Joe Trueman says,“The buzz around
Ultion on social media was something I couldn’t ignore,
so I visited the website and was compelled by its
messages.”
Truemans sells Ultion as an upgrade cylinder on all its
doors and has been spreading the word. It has added
a dedicated Ultion page to its website, sent an eshot
to existing and potential customers, and created flyers
for all customers, available now, from its three Trade
Counter branches in Burnley, Sheffield and Doncaster.
“Ultion outperforms every other lock on the market, and
the marketing is there to back that up,” continues Joe.
“The website is well designed, and most importantly, is
homeowner friendly, so we can direct our customers to
it as a useful sales tool.”
“Security is a key issue for our industry,” adds Joe. “Our
customers are now able to go to homeowners with
important information about home security that speaks
for itself. The clear selling benefits of Ultion are already
helping them win more orders from their competitors.”
Brisant CEO Steve Stewart explains: “Ultion helps sell
real security in an industry that has been ignoring the
issue. Ultion can only be opened with its key, and that
is convincing enough for homeowners to choose one
door over another. Ultion keeps the bad guys out.”

T
he Trojan Group has a policy of bringing
competitive hardware products to the
market, so it’s no surprise that the
introduction of their new TS007 2* accredited door
handle has received an unprecedented response
from customers.
Tony Chadwick, Group Managing Director of
Trojan explains, “As a business we are constantly
looking at ways to help our customers and with
the new Document Q legislation this was another
opportunity to support them. As a result, we have
introduced a TS007 2* high security door handle,
which allows fabricators to fit a lower cost 1*
cylinder and still meet the compliance of Document
Q but at a much more competitive price. The take
up of this new product has been excellent.”
The new 2* high security door handle also has all
the guarantees of quality that you’d expect from a
Trojan product: it comes with a 10 year mechanical
guarantee and because it is manufactured from
high quality stainless steel it has a 25 year anti-
corrosion guarantee too. Available in a full choice
of colours including Polished Gold (PVD), Brushed
Gold (PVD), Polished Stainless, Brushed Stainless
and White Powder coated over stainless colour
options.
Document Q, which came into effect on 1st
October, 2015 requires all windows and doorsets
to meet the requirements of PAS 24: 2014 or other
similar standards (which are all listed in Document
Q). Tony concludes, “While this sounds like a big
change, for Trojan we were well ahead of the game.
The majority of our products already conform to
Document Q compliance and by adding additional
products such as our new TS007 accredited 2* door
handle, we are ensuring our customers have the
latest accredited products but at a very competitive
price.”
In short, it’s the perfect hardware partner!

company’s portfolio. But the introduction
of a new Sparta 2 aluminium window handle

The new Sparta 2 aluminium window handle’s

hen the brief for a
new development is to
blend in with a former
listed breweryand lodging house,
the result is inevitably going to
be something a little above the
ordinary and the Sillavan Way
development in Salford, Greater
Manchester,has lived up to those
expectations. It has also fulfilled
the local authority’s aspiration
for a landmark feature at the
Trinity Way location, which is the
main route into the city centre.
With nearly 600 casement
windows and more than 100
pairs of French doors in the
Spectus Elite 70 bevelled system,
the second phase of the project
was awarded to Worsley Glass by
executive developer Renaker on
the strength of the quality and
service the Spectus fabricator
had delivered on phase one.
The development is made up
of four blocks comprising 327
apartments, a central, courtyard
garden and retail units. It
sits among the three iconic
listed buildings, which are
now a mixture of commercial,
residential and professional uses
but remain a distinctive feature
of the city’s industrial heritage,
and all in the red brick which
characterises much of historic
Greater Manchester.
To complement the brick of both
the new and old buildings, RAL

the exterior of the frames, with
white inside. With the tallest

specification, especially on the
upper floors. Acoustic glass was
also used on some elevations.
The windows and doors achieve

f there’s one thing that any consumer-facing
company must value above all else, then it
is surely reputation – just ask Volkswagen!
Their recent admission of manipulating exhaust
emissions will make it extremely difficult to
persuade customers to trust them again for a very
long time.
You may not have a business the size of VW, but
as a window installer, you will always be judged
on the quality of your workmanship. A happy,
satisfied customer is likely to recommend you to
their friends and family, leading to more work,
more recommendations and a successful business.
And on the reverse side of the coin, just one below-
par installation can damage the good standing
that’s been hard to build and it can prove incredibly
difficult, if not impossible, to resurrect that
reputation. Research undertaken by the Consumer
Forum shows that people are three times more
likely to share a poor customer experience than a
good one.
There are two main factors when it comes to a
professional finish; the first being the skill and care
that is applied to each project, the other being the
quality of the products that are used.
Installers of the Liniar range of windows, doors
and conservatories already work with the highest
quality products on the market – but now a brand
new range of Liniar Approved colour matched
foam trims and installation products have been
launched to enable them to provide a perfect
finish every time.
The foam trims are produced in-house by Liniar
from 100% lead-free PVCu foam, and foiled using
the same superior woodgrain effect coloured foils
as the rest of the products in the Liniar range.
TonyBasile,Liniar’s Business Development Director,
explains further:
“Liniar installation products have been carefully
selected for window installers, builders and
contractors to offer a superb, fully matching finish-
and they perfectly complement the range of Liniar
windows, doors, bi-folds, patios and conservatory
roofs.

“From high quality silicone sealants to beautifully
foiled foam trims, with glues, cleaners and other
accessories – all approved by Liniar – installers
will be able to achieve colour matched, long-
lasting and guaranteed installations.”
Available through Liniar fabricators, the Liniar
Approved building products range comprises the
foam trims mentioned above, together with high
quality coloured, white and clear silicone sealant,
decorator’s caulk and expanding foam, window
boards, joints and end caps, cleaners and adhesives,
fixings and glazing packers-plus other accessories
including tools and touch up pens.
“Liniar’s foam trims are made in-house from the
highest quality, lead free PVCu – just like the rest
of our innovative products,” says Tony,“so installers
can be sure of a perfect match.
“A lot of the products currently available on the
market are extruded using old dies whereas ours
are brand new and the qualitydifference is obvious.
Liniar trims are flat, rather than concave, to give a
much more attractive finish.
“The trims, architraves and angles are also covered
with the same 10-year guarantee as Liniar’s
windows, doors and roofs, offering consumers a
single point of warranty for their installation.
“The feedback so far has been that our list prices,
especially for items such as silicone sealants, are
extremely competitive – so there’s really no need
for Liniar window fitters to go anywhere else.
“The next time an installer collects windows,
doors or conservatory products from their Liniar
fabricator, they’ll also be able to purchase
everything they need from the range of Liniar
Approved installation supplies.
“We’re even offering Liniar fabricators a fully-
branded, fully stocked lockable display cupboard
for their trade counters, making it simple for them
to get started.”
Everything in the Liniar Approved range has been
carefully selected and given the Liniar stamp of
approval to ensure a perfect finish – so make sure
you protect your well-deserved reputation for
quality by finishing your installations with Liniar
products.

I
t’s not known whether Bob Dylan had window
fitters in mind when he penned those seminal
lyrics. But they’re certainly relevant now because
when it comes to the best way of sealing windows
and doors, the times they are a-changin’.
That’s why a light-hearted ‘Gun Amnesty’ at FIT
Show 2016 will urge visitors to lay down their
silicone guns and walk away… with a roll of clean,
efficient TruFit® sealing tape in exchange from
Edgetech, a Quanex company.
Tests show that using sealing tape cuts heat loss by
almost a quarter, against windows sealed using a
silicone gun. It’s also proven to be up to 20 percent
faster to use - making window fitting quicker,
cleaner and neater, as well as saving money. Live
demonstrations at the show will allow installers
to experience the benefits of working with TruFit.
Pre-compressed expanding foam edge tape
provides an effective thermal barrier for window
and door installation. This ensures true energy
rating performance and a long-life weather seal.
Thermal imaging analysis has shown how much
heat can be lost at the edge of windows installed
using traditional methods. When the same windows
were fitted using TruFit sealing tape, an average of
23 percent less heat was lost.
Because it works by expanding to seal all spaces
between the frame and wall effectively, the risk
of gaps due to poor application is eliminated.
Draughts caused by cold spots are minimised, one
of the best ways of creating a feeling of comfort in
the home.
Edgetech’s Director of Sales and Marketing Alan
Fielder says: “Our tongue-in-cheek ‘Gun Amnesty’
allows installers to replace their messy, inefficient
silicone gun with a clean, effective alternative, a
roll of TruFit … no questions asked!”
Installers can drop their silicone guns in the ‘Gun
Amnesty’ bin on Edgetech’s stand number 336 in
Hall 3 at the FIT Show 2016, which takes place at
the International Centre, Telford, from 12-14 April.

Guardian Roof Launches New Seal of Professional
Production Quality for Manufacturers
G
uardian Roof has launched a new industry-
leading seal of production quality and
excellence guarantee.
From September, Guardian manufacturers will be
awarded the status of ‘Professional Production
Facility’which guarantees excellence in production
of the Guardian Warm Roof System.
Better still, it offers complete production peace of
mind for Team Guardian installers-the UK’s largest
network of solid roof system installers.
For Guardian Joe Kearney said:
“We believe this is the most rigorous seal of
manufacturing quality our industry has ever seen.
It covers every element of production, delivery
and support to help manufacturers maintain the
standards for which Guardian is renowned. Our
new standard takes our entire supply chain to a
new level and includes a comprehensive audit
system to ensure that all manufactured roofs are
consistent right across the country.
“But it goes further than that. The pioneering
guarantee of excellence means our Team Guardian
installers know they can count on any Guardian
manufacturer quality. Not only do we guarantee
that the product will be exactly as requested and
described to exact building standards; but we also
pack, label and supply all components specifically
for ease of each installation.”
The seal of excellence also formalises the famous
Guardian Roof pre-build: Before every Guardian
roof leaves the manufacturing facility, it is built to
completion prior to despatch. Then, every single
component is carefully labelled and packed for
ease of installation when on site.
Guardian Warm Roofs leave each manufacturing
facility ready for installation, including all fixings
and insulations.Guardian even offers full technical
support and on-site assistance with new installers
first installation.
Last month, Guardian Roof celebrated selling over
15,000 roofs throughout the UK In just 10 years.
In September last year Guardian Roof launched
a new membership drive targeting a total of 400
accredited installers by 2016.
Joe Kearney added:
“Our Team Guardian membership drive is going
from strength to strength. And we expect more
installers to join the team thanks to the peace
of mind our new Professional Production Facility
status and excellence guarantee will bring.
“In just ten years, we have built partnerships with
hundreds of installers and some of the UK’s finest
fabricators. Their support for our unique business
model and hard work is now paying off in massive
success for the brand.
“We remain hugely grateful to each and every
one of our skilled fabricators and our incredible
network of skilled Team Guardian Installers. We
thank them for their efforts, belief and trust in the
UK’s market-leading solid lightweight warm roof
solution.”

T
wo years ago, Jo and Andy Thompson were living
in social housing at Unity Gardens, Long Sutton,
Lincolnshire-one of the UK’s first zero-carbon housing
developments.
They had resigned themselves to being lifelong renters,
having no spare cash for a deposit; buying or even building
their own home was a pipe dream. “We would watch TV
programmes like Grand Designs, but they were utterly
depressing because everyone had such big budgets,” says
Andy.
Then one day, the dream of owning their own home became
more of a reality.
“Jo’s mother moved into a semi-detached house in South
Lincolnshire and was sitting outside one day wondering how
she would look after the huge garden as she got older.”
In June 2012, Jo and Andy did some sums and took the
plunge by offering to buy some of the garden to build their
own house. Jo comments: “My mum was overjoyed when we
offered to buy the land – it was her chance to help us and at
the same time, our chance to help her too.”
Eco friendly
“When it came to looking at house designs, we were inspired
by the development that we used to live in, which was
eco-friendly with no utility bills - and nice and simple. We
employed the help of local Architect Dr Jerry Harrall (www.
drharrall.com) a multi award winning designer of eco-
friendly developments.”
Jerry, a Chartered Architect, developer and independent
researcher, qualified in 1995 and has accumulated fourteen
years of first-hand experience designing, building, living,
working in and monitoring naturally heated, naturally
ventilated buildings. He has now to his credit designed
14 buildings that hold UK’s highest Energy Performance
Certificates, as well as the seven lowest air pressure tests
on record.
The Thompsons’ previous home, Unity Gardens, is an
award-winning development created and designed by Jerry,
comprising six carbon negative single-storey dwellings
in Lincolnshire. The development was the first near-
autonomous housing scheme of its kind and has achieved a
Code for Sustainable Homes Rating of Level 4.
“Once Jerry had designed our new home, which we’d named
‘FranklyBee’, he submitted the plans – keeping it simple to
avoid any hold ups. We then sorted the finance, applying for
a self-build mortgage,” continues Andy.
Jerry reflects on the Planning process: “The first challenge
came after submitting the plans to South Holland District
Council. The planners required a consensus as to whether
to support the application, due to the building being classed
as ‘modern architecture.’ Luckily, however, the same local
authority’s Building Control team had a completely opposite
approach and championed the designs from the onset.
“The issues arose as they were focusing on what wasn’t in
the building as opposed to what was. The house has no
foundations, being simply built on a garage floor slab – and
has no cavity walls, no plasterboard and no mechanical
ventilation.”

The Build
It took 12 months from submitting the plans to beginning
the build.
Andy continues: “In March 2014, we moved into a caravan
on-site and building began.
“Due to the differences in the way the building was designed,
trades-people had to take a new approach to the way they
worked. Bricklayers, for example, weren’t required to lay
bricks or leave cavities in the wall.
“Our main objective was to build an eco-friendly home with
no utility bills – exactly as we had been living in previously.”
Jerry explains: “The weakest area of a house is traditionally
the windows, as this is where most of the heat is lost. Most
standard house builders will usually get U-values of around
1.7W/m2K - but the aim for FranklyBee was to get below
1.0W/m2K.”
Jo says: “We hadn’t heard of Liniar windows before, but
our architect recommended them as he had used them in
previous projects. We did look at timber as an option, but we
had seen it used in other developments where it had warped
and had problems with the seals. So, as we wanted a large
opening, we didn’t want to risk it.
“We wouldn’t touch aluminum with a bargepole! It was just
too expensive and not at all energy efficient. So really, we
were set on having PVCu from the beginning. We found a
local Liniar installer, Bob Mills, who could help us achieve
our objectives.”
Bob ordered windows with Liniar EnergyPlus six-chamber
profile, plastic composite spacer bar, triple glazing and low
emissivity film on the inside and outside to achieve a U-value
of 0.8W/m2K. By using this combination, the heat loss from
the house was reduced by 50%. The windows were installed
on a layer of external insulation as opposed to the usual
cavity, to further increase thermal efficiency.
Modern living
“FranklyBee represents modern living,” claims Andy, “and
we’re delighted that the building is ‘Energy Positive’ by 40%
- meaning that it generates 40% more energy that it uses.
Putting that into numbers, our house generates around 5,000
kWh of energy a year, but we only use around 3,000 kWh.
“Overall, the build went smoothly from start to finish. It was
constructed exactly as it was designed, and best of all, we
received our first energy ‘bill’ the other day – as we’d hoped,
it was actually a cheque!”

Promoted to over
Top of the caps
The final touch to installing a PVCu conservatory is to fit top caps to hide the framework and provide an attractive
finish. However, a big problem for most conservatory roof manufacturers is in the preparation of their PVCu
single-walled top caps.
Not only do they provide poor thermal efficiency, but due to their flimsy construction they often bend and splay
when cut - making it practically impossible to perform a neat and accurate mitre and leaving the fitter with
ill-fitting parts to make the best of.
One way around this is to opt for aluminium top caps as they are rigid and therefore easier to cut – however, they
can bring their own problems - not only do they not have the thermal benefits of PVCu, they are more expensive.
In addition, they are heavier to handle, scratch easily and are difficult to fit. Also, the gasket has to be added to
aluminium top caps manually, costing valuable man hours during the production process.
Best of both worlds
Designed to clip on effortlessly, Liniar’s twin-walled top caps encapsulate the best of both worlds. They are strong
and durable, making them easy to cut, and the design of the EnergyPlus roof top caps means a Liniar
conservatory is one of the most energy efficient on the market.
Because we are so proud of our product, and confident in its strength, we put it through a series of tests to see
exactly how it would fare in comparison to a single-walled equivalent. The results were conclusive, although no
surprise to us.
As part of the tests, a sample of both profiles was squeezed, twisted, stood upon, sat on and even driven over by
a car.The twin-walled top cap proved to be astoundingly strong while the single-walled samples left much to be
desired – just take a look at the photos!
Magnificent mitres
Compound cuts to jack rafters are a joy with a consistent, professional-looking scribe every time.A secure, reliable
one-position location waves goodbye to excessive and uneven leg-splay. Mitred corners fit seamlessly, giving the
roof a beautiful finish.
Available with an unparalleled range of foiled finishes, twin-walled top caps aren’t the only benefit to buying a
Liniar conservatory roof. Liniar’s precision factory-fitted woodgrain foils give the authentic appearance of timber
without the maintenance. And, unlike other conservatories, end caps and glazing retainers are also foiled,
ensuring the whole installation matches for a stunning effect.
Bespoke designs
Each Liniar roof is designed on a bespoke basis to your exact specifications and delivered to site with all the parts
you’ll need – and with colours available from stock, Liniar’s lead times are usually lower than other roof suppliers.

eam members of the GM Fundraising
Border2Border (B2B) Cycling Challenge
sponsored by Deceuninck, got the first collective
taste of just how tough next year’s Vancouver, Canada
to Tijuana, Mexico ride will be when they took part
in Yorkshire’s 2015 Dark Peak Challenge. While the
landscape and the climate may be continents apart,
the challenge was a great taster for the team, covering
some 65 miles and scaling heights of 1640 feet.
The ride was officially started by Former World
Champion Yvonne McGregor MBE, Cycling Manager on
the Border2Border Cycling Challenge, and B2B team
members taking part included Matthew Glover, Darren
Lloyd,Andrew Glover,Mike James,Alan Sadler and Nigel
Barrett. The ‘West Yorkshire Windows’team line up was
completed by, James Elston and Andy Ibberson.
Gary Morton comments:“Taking place over 11 days next
June, spanning 2,016 miles between Vancouver, Canada
and Tijuana,Mexico, offering up 92,295 feet of climbing
and temperatures in excess of 40 degrees, the GMF B2B
ride is being described as the ‘Toughest Yet’ for good
reason. Without the necessary advanced training there
is no way even an experienced cyclist would survive
the B2B challenge. That’s why the 18 strong riding
team are already starting a regime of planned training
of the 2,500 miles target prior to the ride, including
75,000 feet climbing and at least fifteen, 70 plus mile
rides over the next 12 months.
“Riders commented that this Dark Peak challenge
really proved how essential this training is as many of
the days on B2B are far tougher. It was the first of many
such training weekends with more to follow including
Wales, Mallorca & the Peak District.”

S
ynseal group companies Masterdor Ltd and
Sheerframe Ltd have helped Nick Knowles and
the BBC DIY SOS team to transform properties
in Manchester and create high quality homes suitable
for British war veterans and local community residents.
In BBC1’s two-part special, the DIY SOS team delivered
its most ambitious project to date when it agreed
to refurbish more than 60 houses in Manchester’s
New Street and Canada Street. The programme of
building works was undertaken to create an improved,
more resident-friendly neighbourhood and included a
Walking With The Wounded advice and therapy centre
as well as extensive streetscaping work.
Masterdor Ltd was delighted to supply 15 composite
residential doors with Sheerframe outer frames on the
project and supplier partners Select Engineering Asia,
UAP Hardware and Distinction Doors also contributed
associated door components free of charge. The
Masterdor doors were expertly fitted by Glen Bracek of
CLG Joinery who provided on-site installation services.
Sheerframe Ltd provided PVC-U extrusions for energy-
efficient windows in the 66 homes which were
specially fabricated and fitted by leading window, door
and curtain walling manufacturer and installer CMS
Window Systems.
“When we heard what the DIY SOS team were planning
to undertake in Manchester we all wanted to contribute
in a meaningful way,” comments Synseal’s Chief
Executive David Leng, “This endeavour was obviously
for such a good cause and the BBC programmes
screened in October were both heart-warming and
inspirational. I would like to thank our associated
Synseal suppliers and fabricator partners for their
additional hands-on support and practical assistance
with this impressive community project.”

VBH GOES
JIGLESS
WITH ROTO
DESIGNO 2
Hardware specialist VBH has added NT Designo
2 to its range.
Designo 2 is the latest concealed hinge ‘Tilt
before Turn’ tilt and turn hardware system from
the respected German manufacturer Roto-Frank,
and replaces the NT R, or Royal, system.
Most of VBH’s customers who have been using
Royal have now upgraded to Designo 2 and VBH
reports that the transition has been smooth. This
has been helped by the fact that the main differ-
ences between the two systems are in the top and
bottom hinge components. All the main ‘locking’
components are unaffected by the change so dis-
ruption to fabricators has been kept to an absolute
minimum.
Designo 2’s hinges carry a sash weight of 100Kg
as standard, but this can be upgraded to 150Kg if
the optional load transfer device is fitted. Another
feature of the system is that the profile related
hinges self locate into the frame corners without
the need to pre-drill fixing holes or support pin
holes with a drilling jig or template.
Designo 2 has been present in its original turn first
form in Germany for some years and has met with
approval from German fabricators and installers.
Now that it is available in the ‘Tilt before Turn’ for-
mat peculiar to the UK and Irish markets, it arrives
as a tried and tested product.
VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says ‘Our
Roto customers have been very happy to upgrade
to Designo 2 as the changes to their stock holding
is minimal and they can see some genuine advan-
tages. The fitting procedure is largely unchanged
with the main difference being a faster, jigless,
fitting method for the hinges. The hinges them-
selves are small but immensely strong. This is a
plus point for specifiers and building designers
as large and heavy windows can be built with
Designo 2. This gives them more scope when
specifying glazing sizes, and triple glazing in par-
ticular.’

atiomaster, one of the UK’s best-known
names in sliding patio doors, has named
Priya Bains as its new Brand Manager.
Priya joins at the time when PatioMaster, part
of the Epwin Group, is looking to develop and
strengthen its fabricator network across Britain
and Ireland, including its lead generation
resource and trade and consumer marketing
support, as well as seeking new ways to help
dealers build sales.
She said of her appointment: “I am very excited
about taking on the challenge of helping to
develop the network of PatioMaster dealers.
My main priority will be to build a close
communication loop and stable support
system for them and I am looking forward very
much to working with them all.”
Epwin Group Marketing Manager Gerald Allen
said: “Despite the inroads made by bi-folds,
the patio market is still alive and kicking.
PatioMaster is the brand that is leading that

driving it forwards. The role of Brand Manager

Part Q: Do all doors
make the cut?
Dear Editor,
Amends to Approved Document Q are now in force
and it has been interesting to see how the industry
has responded in the run up to October 1st. This
past week in particular has provided a flurry of
activity from hardware manufacturers, testing
and certification companies, industry bodies and
of course, composite door suppliers. We have all
seen Solidor’s video which demonstrates its door
passing the more demanding PAS 24 cut tests, but
what we have also seen is a lack of commotion
concerning the role played by the door glass.
That this seems to be flying under the radar is
particularly surprising - you wouldn’t lock your car
and leave the windows open, likewise it is common
sense for what is potentially the most vulnerable
part of the door to be protected. As demonstrated
by Solidor’s powerful video*, an intruder could
break into an unsecured slab in a minute and a
half, so just imagine how quickly they could break
through unsecured glass.
The facts:
The amended Document Q states that all doors
and windows for use in new build projects must
be “manufactured to a design that has been shown
by test to meet the security requirements of British
Standards publication PAS 24:2012.”
Under PAS24:2012 “any glazing which, if broken
would allow someone to insert their hand and
release the locking device on the inside of the door
should be a minimum of class P1A in accordance
with BS EN 356:2000. Double- or triple-glazed
units need to incorporate only one pane of class-
P1A glass.”
To achieve a P1A classification, this glass needs to
be at least 6.8mm laminated, not toughened.
Our Decorative Door Products (DDP) division has
been offering 6.8mm as an option on laminates
since August 2013, covering both our Signature
imported units and those manufactured in-house
at our Hawick facility. As an integral part of the
supply chain, it’s important for us to understand
the changing legislation to ensure we are ahead of
the game in providing the correct specification of
units to our customers.I wonder if every door glass
provider can say the same.

FIT’S A CERT FOR
DOORCO IN 2016
O
ne visitor in every five converted into

– it’s little wonder that DOORCO was
quick to book a return to the FIT Show in 2016.
“With that kind of success from the first two
shows, there was never any doubt we’ll back
next year,” said MD Dan Sullivan.
“We went to the first event to showcase our
major new venture into prepped composite
door slabs,as well as our new in-house painting
facility, and by the end of the show 20% of all
our visitors had signed up to the range.
“At the second show, we launched three new
door designs, as well as our new brand identity.
We opened ten new customer accounts
immediately after – every one of them from
people we had met at the show.”
He continued: “Both of these were important
developments for DOORCO, especially the
move into prepped slabs which was a very
major diversification for us, and we’re pleased
to say both FIT Shows delivered the results we
needed. They played a real part in the success
of these products as well as the company’s
growth overall.
“At FIT 2016, we will not only be featuring a
number of product innovations but also new
customer service initiatives and we are looking
for the same kind of results the third time
around.”

ndurance Doors from Rocal
have just launched their new
Classical Collection, as part
of their ever expanding range of
solid and secure composite doors,
which now boasts 16 colours and
woodgrains inside or out, along
with 11 different frame colours.
This exciting Classical Collection of
door styles, which includes the new
Wentwood and Walton designs, has
been inspired by traditional timber
door designs and those of the
Victorian and Georgian eras. Rocal
was one of the founding companies
in the solid core composite door
market back in 2002 and the re-
launch of the Endurance brand
at the back end of 2014 reflects
the new face of the business, as it
looks to cement its position as a
major player in the composite door
market.
Given the nature of these new
door designs, Endurance Doors
expects that consumers will look to
choose the Winkhaus AV2 Heritage
automatic, multi-point locking
system rather than a handle to
the exterior and there’s also the
opportunity to upgrade to the key
less AV2-B battery operated and
AV2-E electronic multi-point lock.
Strong colours such as rich red
and racing green are expected to
be popular, along with Chartwell
Green, Pearl Grey and Rosewood.
In 2015 alone there have been
16 new door designs launched
including these latest period
inspired Wentwood and Walton
doors, along with the introduction
of Walnut and Pearl Grey as new
finishes for both the door slab and
the standard REHAU door frames.
Both the REHAU TOTAL70S and
TOTAL70C 5-chambered door
frames are now available across
the Endurance Solid and Secure
composite door range.
Stephen Nadin, managing director
of Rocal Group commented:
‘Over the last 12 months we’ve
generated considerable momentum
in the business and the Classical
Collection will help further fuel
this success. We’ve got bold growth
plans now in place and a strategy
to make the Endurance brand
totally synonymous with product
quality, innovation and excellent
customer service in solid and secure
composite doors.’

P
hoenix Doors, part of MASCO
UK Window Group has added
a new PVC-U outer-frame to
its GRP composite door range that
will further help to eliminate any
colour match issues for installers.
The composite door and PVC-U door
panel manufacturer has added the
Liniar white profile to the dedicated
outer-frame options for its Phoenix
County Collection composite doors.
This new addition complements the
existing choices of Duraflex outer-
frames in Warm White or Brilliant
White, plus the 70mm Eurocell
composite door outer-frame system
specifically designed to work with a
44mm width door leaf. Woodgrain
foil finishes are also available for
most of the three outer-frames
currently being offered by Phoenix.
For customers wanting to add a
splash of colour surrounding their
new entrance doors, Phoenix can
alsoofferfoiledouter-framescoated
in a wide range of RAL shades to
suit particular requirements. High-
quality finishes are created at
Phoenix Doors’ in-house spraying
facility, which opened in early 2015.
“Adding Liniar to our range gives us
a great offering to the marketplace
and provides extra flexibility for
customers who can supply our door
with the same outer-frame profiles
as their windows. This eliminates
any colour-match issues, for
example when butting up sidelights
and top lights,” commented Haydon

Director.
“Being able to colour-match
with even more windows makes
economic sense and keeps the
job cost-effective. Broadening our
outer-frame range has given us
another ‘string to our bow’ and is
part of our on-going commitment
to delivering a wider range of

P
hoenix Doors, part of MASCO
UK Window Group, says
demand for its double-rebated
composite door range has risen in
recent months due to increased
awareness among fabricators and
installers for a high-end product
from a dependable manufacturer.
“Since the successful launch
of Meridian, our new high-
performance 70mm double-rebated
composite door, in the summer we
have been amazed at the uptake
from customers wanting a high
quality product with reliable
delivery and, crucially, from a
sustainable supplier,” comments
Haydon Statham, Phoenix Doors’
Sales Director.
He points out that their newest,
premium addition to an already
comprehensive composite door
range represents a ‘significant
widening of choice in the
competitive composite door market’.
“It appears that double-rebated
doors are the way forward; we’ve
been surprised at how many people
are seeking this twin rebate concept
that helps to open up the ‘door to
new opportunities’ alongside our
traditional 44mm composite door
offering,” continues Haydon.
Phoenix, a long-established
Cambridgeshire-based composite
door and door panel manufacturer,
can supply Meridian in ten days
from receipt of order to delivery
anywhere in the UK.
Manufactured to achieve Secured

innovative Meridian door with

Haydon adds: “Ultimately,a range of
factors are driving the popularity of
this unique and high end product,
which is not a ‘one-size fits all’

in a manufacturer that can deliver

TRUEDORDELIGHTEDTOSIGNGEORGE
CLARKE FOR ANOTHER YEAR
T
he man who has become the face of the
Composite Door market in the UK is set to
continue his promotion of the Truedor brand.
George Clarke has agreed to continue his work with IG
Doors to promote their Truedor brand for another year
following the success of their initial partnership. The
TV personality so well known to so many will continue
his role as an ambassador for Truedor and will play an
even bigger part in the marketing efforts in the coming
12 months.
Sales and Marketing Manager for the Truedor brand
Richard Kirman confirmed the news and announced
that the company is “absolutely delighted that George
has agreed to continue working with IG Doors”.
“From our point of view the relationship with him has
been an outstanding success; but we know he is very
passionate about brand integrity, and so him agreeing
to work with us again tells us that we have done things
the right way and achieved everything we set out to do
over the last 12 months”.
“He is a great ambassador for us; he understands what
a composite door does to a building, and the guidance
and thinking he has given to us have been outstanding.
His summary of the different building types in the UK
and his understanding of the types of doors which best
suit them has been a real asset for us and has become
a great selling point”.
“He has great credibility with the home owners – he is
very much a trusted name, and our installers feel very
comfortable selling a product endorsed by him. He is
not a celebrity endorsement for the sake of it; he is
a ‘celebrity’ who has great credibility for the type of
product we sell and the nature of where those products
are installed”.
Commenting on his decision to sign up with Truedor
for a further 12 months George commented “I am really
pleased to continue my work with the team at Truedor.
When I visited their factory last year I realised the
precision, the care, and the skill that they put into every
door, and that they understood what was important to
me in terms of the right products being complementary
to the right property type”.
“My background is buildings, and their understanding
of the subject was a real breath of fresh air–they really
get the importance of offering the right products to
homeowners of different property types”.
“This year is going to be really exciting for us all; they
have great new products coming out yet again and I
am delighted that they are so keen to continue our
relationship – it shows true commitment to what they
believe in and I am delighted to be alongside them
once again”.
Getting FIT for the Show
Truedor will once again be at the FIT Show (12th-14th
April 2016 at Telford International Centre) and as well
as showing their latest door styles and colours they
will also be showing their tailored support packages
for all types of installer groups. It is one of the many
outstanding features of the Truedor offering that their
support packages are purposely bespoke to the needs
of the installer – whether working from a van or a
showroom, buying from a trade counter or installing
into new-build or social housing – all underpinned by
an outstanding product range and great service.
Revolutionary AutoLock
Launched by John Fredericks
F
or John Fredericks, launching a dynamic, new
security product on today’s market takes more
than a simple evaluation of current industry
products and then making improvements on what
already exists. Revolutionising a sector takes time,
patience and a commitment to innovation that
will provide a unique solution, which combines
superior quality and lasting guarantees.
As such, the R&D department at John Fredericks
has taken this responsibility very seriously with
the launch of a new, fully patented product that
will revolutionise door security across the UK and
Europe. When looking at tomorrow’s secure door
market the companyconsidered it vitallyimportant
to consider today’s issues with an eye on future
market direction and end user requirements.
Consequently, the new Autolock was created which
provides the ultimate in security and functionality.
For the last 18 months, technicians and senior
management at the company have been working
closely with the MACO team in Austria and the
UK, and subsequently have introduced the proven,
patented door locking solution for domestic and
commercial applications. This device is available
exclusively from John Fredericks and can be
adapted for a broad range of applications including
domestic properties,schools,commercial premises
and properties with high security specifications.
Currently it is estimated that 70% of consumers do
not use the multi-point locking facility now fitted
to most pvc-u doors, leaving people vulnerable to
break-insandthedoorsusceptibletomisalignment.
With this in mind, the Research and Development
team evaluated the needs of all types of
consumers during the design and development
stages of the new Autolock product. In particular,
this new system now provides specific technical
advantages for the elderly and vulnerable, which
was an essential part of the product development
according to Managing Director, Steve Darkins.
The unique capabilities of the Autolock maximises
security via IS. cams and hookbolt combinations
that are PAS24 tested. On closing the door, all
locking points are automatically triggered without
any need to activate the lever handle, and a turn of
the key deadlocks the door. This also prevents the
door from bowing as the locking points are always
engaged when the door is closed.
Subsequently, the configuration of the device
completely eliminates warping, twisting and air
leaks thanks to meticulous Austrian design from
the MACO engineers. The distinctive features of
this proven device provide a unique ten point
locking system that automatically secures the
door via the MACO ‘Silent Latch’ function. This
ensures easy to use doors with latch compression
and a flexible adjustment on the lock side.
The Autolock is available only from John Fredericks
and will be introduced initially as a standard fitting
on all new composite doors and other single doors
in the company’s range from 1st December 2015,
with the idea of developing this further and rolling
it out into a double door solution early in 2016.
Recognised as an industry leader in relation to
thermally efficient, innovative, pvc-u windows and
doors, the company also supplies purpose-driven
locking devices and a wide range of exceptional
solutions for the building sector.
Kevin Whiting, Managing Director of MACO UK,
long term partners with John Fredericks Plastics,
a division of A&B Glass Group, commented: ‘’MACO
understood the detailed findings by the research

carried out by John Fredericks Plastics in regards
to specifically targeting the problem of consumers
not properly locking their doors , whilst at the
same time still enabling the elderly and less able
to operate them easily.
John Fredericks Plastics commissioned our
Research and Development teams in the UK and
Austria to fulfil this need, we in turn developed a
smooth operating, highly secure automatic door
lock with absolute minimal force required to lock
it. Simply push the door closed and a turn of the
key it’s locked.’’
When A&B Glass Group approached MACO some
18 months ago to develop the project MACO were
driven to ensure that their in-depth knowledge of
the industry was paramount to the door locks’final
design and build, the design and engineering is a
truly revolutionary solution not just for today but
also the future of the door locking industry as a
whole.
The system is extremely versatile and can be
configured for all styles of single doors including
composite doors. Ensuring customers can offer
innovative design options that will provide
matchless security and exceptional quality has
been a priority for management at both John
Fredericks and MACO.
Steve Darkins, Managing Director at John
Fredericks comments, “The new Autolock has
been meticulously designed alongside the MACO
development team, with the specific purpose of
bringing a lock to the market that excels in terms
of performance and security standards.
We are driven to satisfy the emerging lock needs
of an ever changing market and believe that the
Autolock will deliver the perfect combination
of optimum security and easy use. The John
Fredericks brand has an established pedigree
for excellence, leading the market in terms of
performance guarantees and security features and
this new system is a testament to our progressive
approach to innovation and customer support.”

SHEERFRAME & CMS TARGET
FUEL POVERTY ERADICATION
H
igh performance PVCu windows designed and
installed to the right standard, supplemented with
draught proof doors and external wall insulation
(EWI), represent the most powerful weapon that social
landlords have in the fight against stubborn fuel poverty.
That was the message from UK PVCu systems company
Sheerframe, and window, door and curtain walling
fabricator and installer CMS Window Systems,at the latest
seminar in the CMS Technical Masterclass Programme.
Held recently at the company’s state of the art educational
facility, the Innovation Hub, the seminar was attended by
more than 25 housing specifiers and managers from local
authorities and housing associations across Scotland.
According to David Strang, Sheerframe’s Key Accounts
Director, who presented the seminar, the absence of a
joined up strategy to meet the demand for new homes,
coupled with the impracticality of controlling UK energy
prices, means improving the building fabric of our social
housing is the obvious way to help those most at risk from
fuel poverty.
“The Scottish Government pledged to eradicate fuel
poverty by 2016, but with only a few months left before
that deadline it seems we’re a long way from where we are
supposed to be. So we must keep up the drive for better
quality building fabric, particularly in social housing, to
reduce the need for heating in the poorest households
and allow tenants to save money.
“Up to 67% of household heat loss is through the windows,
doors and walls – so upgrading using today’s proven,
thermally superior window and door technology is as high
a priority as boiler and central heating replacement.”
Sheerframe window systems are used by CMS to
manufacture all its PVCu windows. The thermal
performance of these windows is optimised thanks to the
design of the multi-chambered Sheerframe 8000 profile
which is reinforced using Thermlock FP.This is a structural
PVC foam fixing reinforcement made from 100% lead,
barium and cadmium free PVC, which eliminates the need
for poorly insulating metal reinforcements–it also makes
windows 15% lighter so less demanding for installers.
David adds: “Installing triple glazed Zero Carbon windows
and doors with 0.8 W/m2K U values are increasingly seen
as effective solutions to reducing fuel poverty.”
The Sheerframe seminar was the third in the Technical
Masterclass Programme organised by CMS as part of
its support for clients, designed to help them improve
the quality and energy efficiency of their housing
stock. Previous seminars have helped specifiers gain
best practice insights into hardware and security, with
expertise provided by Yale and Securistyle, and the latest
advanced glazing options thanks to technical guidance
from GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain.
The next seminar will take place in November in
conjunction with Rockwool, with technical insights into
external wall insulation (EWI) on the agenda.

and GreenbuildEXPO has always proved the ideal event
for us to communicate our message to them.
“As well as our the energy efficiency of our windows and

to emphasise the significance and value of a strictly

network such as that provided by Profile 22.”
Profile 22 offers one of the most specified PVC-U

  • 10. ROBNORMANEXPLAINSHOWVBHMAKESCOMPLIANCE TO DOCUMENT Q VERY SIMPLE It’s the subject that the industry’s been talking about for some months and it’s finally here. Much has already been written, but to recap, from 1st October window and doors installed in new build properties in England and some of those in Wales must comply with the requirements of Building Regulations Approved Document Q. The aim of the document is to increase the level of security in NEW BUILD homes and in existing buildings that have been converted into housing. This is to be achieved by increasing the level of security in windows and entrance doors. Document Q does not affect replacement products. It is down to the people responsible for the building work, such as the designer, builder or installer, to ensure that the work complies. Of course, they will need documented proof from the fabricator to pass on to Building Control, and failure to comply may result in the building owner being served with an enforcement notice. Document Q is applicable to all new build/ conversion installations in England and those into excepted energy buildings in Wales, regardless of where the windows or doors are manufactured. Conversely, products manufactured in England and Wales do not have to comply with Document Q if they are being installed outside of those two countries. As when any new guideline or legislation is announced, there has been much gnashing of teeth and confusion within the industry about what Document Q means and what fabricators need to do to comply. VBH are producing a selection of Document Q Compliance Packs that will support our fabricating customers in achieving that compliance. There are a number of ways to achieve compliance and VBH can help in choosing the best route, but in short, the windows/doors must be consistently produced to a specification that has been tested to, and passed, the PAS24:2012 security standard or has achieved accredited product performance certification. Manufacturers producing bespoke timber windows and doors will have to have their own products tested or demonstrate compliance to Appendix B of Document Q, which lays down a specification for bespoke timber doorsets. OntopoftheexistingPAS24orproductperformance specs, Document Q also calls for a few additional features such as the fitting of door viewers on main entrance doors that do not feature clear glass or do not have a glazed panel adjacent to the door itself. There is also a requirement to fit a limiter or chain to such doors, unless there is good reason not to. The document advises that an example of this is where a warden may need emergency access |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv10 GLAZING Hardware
  • 11. to residents in sheltered housing. In this case an alternative means of caller identification such as electronic audio-visual door entry system should be fitted. There are also added stipulations about the maximum allowable letterplate aperture and a requirement to fit a device to hinder fishing through that aperture. It all sounds complicated but it needn’t be, as we at VBH have taken steps to make compliance to Document Q very easy for our customers. Our product portfolio of own brand greenteQ and major market partners such as Maco, Roto and Yale, among others, enables us to offer our customers a tailored Document Q solution for all their applications. A large part of my job is to work with PVCu and aluminium systems companies to make sure that their fabricator network has access to hardware when a new profile suite is launched, and to work together for the good of our mutual customers when new legislation is introduced. Document Q has been high on the agenda at meetings with many systems houses these past few months, as you can imagine. I mentioned the Compliance Pack a little earlier. This is something that we’ve put together for users of the profiles that we’ve been in dialogue with. In short, it’s all you need to ensure that your windows and doors comply. We would love to hear from you to discuss how we can help. Rob Norman is Systems Sales Manager at VBH (GB) Ltd and can be contacted on 07740 401352 or rob. norman@vbhgb.com. Hardware
  • 12. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv12 GLAZING Hardware Trojan’s Pegasus High Security Window Lock offers uncompromising security www.trojan-hardware.com T he Trojan Group is renowned for delivering innovative products that perform exceptionally well. This is perfectly demonstrated in their Pegasus High Security Window Lock which has taken the market by storm since its launch last year. The Pegasus High Security Window Lock has multi point locking and guaranteed centre and corner locking for additional security with every installation. It has an extended 20mm reverse locking action which ensures the lock provides enhanced engagement and security. What’s more, when windows are jemmy attacked, the 20mm locking actions intensify rather than disengaging as is the case on most window locks. The strength of the security credentials are demonstrated in the lock’s PAS 24 accreditation, when fitted as part of a window assembly, which ensures it meets the standards of Document Q. Pegasus has also achieved BBA accreditation as further testament to the product’s technical excellence, performance and overall quality. Trojan’s Tony Chadwick says, “The Pegasus is packed with features that are certain to appeal to security-conscious homeowners and the requirements for Document Q as of the 1st October. It can be seen as ‘more than just a lock’ and is therefore a valuable addition to salespeople’s armoury. We are not surprised that sales of this product continue to grow at an amazing pace.” The security features of the Pegasus sit alongside a wealth of other benefits that are certain to appeal to fabricators and installers. It is the original “one size lock fits all windows”, so a single lock is suitable for all sashes from 420mm to 1300mm, giving valuable economies of scale. It’s quick and easy to install too because the keeps are fitted identical in centre and corner positions for every application and gasket compression can be adjusted up to 0.75mm. Offset applications are also achievable from the standard product and the compact central gearbox, which is just 65mm long, means minimal routing is required. The lock is manufactured using high grade zinc alloy, grades 430 and 304 stainless steel and GF nylon and has been independently tested to EN1191 and PAS 24. Evidence of the quality of lock is demonstrated in its 10 year guarantee against mechanical failure. Tony concludes, “The Pegasus High Security Window Lock delivers in all areas: it has outstanding security credentials while also offering excellent cost savings.” And that’s why the lock has joined other products in Trojan’s portfolio as one that adds value where it matters.

T he Trojan Group has a policy of bringing competitive hardware products to the market, so it’s no surprise that the introduction of their new TS007 2* accredited door handle has received an unprecedented response from customers. Tony Chadwick, Group Managing Director of Trojan explains, “As a business we are constantly looking at ways to help our customers and with the new Document Q legislation this was another opportunity to support them. As a result, we have introduced a TS007 2* high security door handle, which allows fabricators to fit a lower cost 1* cylinder and still meet the compliance of Document Q but at a much more competitive price. The take up of this new product has been excellent.” The new 2* high security door handle also has all the guarantees of quality that you’d expect from a Trojan product: it comes with a 10 year mechanical guarantee and because it is manufactured from high quality stainless steel it has a 25 year anti- corrosion guarantee too. Available in a full choice of colours including Polished Gold (PVD), Brushed Gold (PVD), Polished Stainless, Brushed Stainless and White Powder coated over stainless colour options. Document Q, which came into effect on 1st October, 2015 requires all windows and doorsets to meet the requirements of PAS 24: 2014 or other similar standards (which are all listed in Document Q). Tony concludes, “While this sounds like a big change, for Trojan we were well ahead of the game. The majority of our products already conform to Document Q compliance and by adding additional products such as our new TS007 accredited 2* door handle, we are ensuring our customers have the latest accredited products but at a very competitive price.” In short, it’s the perfect hardware partner! |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv18 GLAZING Hardware Trojan’snew TS0072*high securitydoor handleoffers everythingyou’d expectfroma Trojanproduct

  • 24. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv24 GLAZING Fabricator & Installer W hen the brief for a new development is to blend in with a former listed breweryand lodging house, the result is inevitably going to be something a little above the ordinary and the Sillavan Way development in Salford, Greater Manchester, has lived up to those expectations. It has also fulfilled the local authority’s aspiration for a landmark feature at the Trinity Way location, which is the main route into the city centre. With nearly 600 casement windows and more than 100 pairs of French doors in the Spectus Elite 70 bevelled system, the second phase of the project was awarded to Worsley Glass by executive developer Renaker on the strength of the quality and service the Spectus fabricator had delivered on phase one. The development is made up of four blocks comprising 327 apartments, a central, courtyard garden and retail units. It sits among the three iconic listed buildings, which are now a mixture of commercial, residential and professional uses but remain a distinctive feature of the city’s industrial heritage, and all in the red brick which characterises much of historic Greater Manchester. To complement the brick of both the new and old buildings, RAL 7016 anthracite was chosen for the exterior of the frames, with white inside. With the tallest blockrisingto17storeys,weather tightness was integral to the specification, especially on the upper floors. Acoustic glass was also used on some elevations. The windows and doors achieve a U-value of 1.2. Anthony Kilbourn of Worsley Glass said: “The success of phase one was an invaluable foot in the door for Worsley. It proves how important each and every job is, andwhyit’scrucialthatwedeliver time after time. There’s no doubt the quality and performance of our product played a big part in us securing the second phase. Spectus supported us every step of the way, advising on technical details and supplying coloured profile on-time and in-full.” As further testament to the Work of Worsley Glass and the Spectus system, the fabricator was appointed supply chain partner for a subsequent Renaker development of almost 500 apartments. www.worsleyglass.co.uk www.spectus.co.uk SPECTUS & WORSLEY GLASS BLEND INTO A CITY’S INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

  • 26. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv26 GLAZING Fabricator & Installer BUILDAREPUTATIONFORTHEPERFECTFINISH I f there’s one thing that any consumer-facing company must value above all else, then it is surely reputation – just ask Volkswagen! Their recent admission of manipulating exhaust emissions will make it extremely difficult to persuade customers to trust them again for a very long time. You may not have a business the size of VW, but as a window installer, you will always be judged on the quality of your workmanship. A happy, satisfied customer is likely to recommend you to their friends and family, leading to more work, more recommendations and a successful business. And on the reverse side of the coin, just one below- par installation can damage the good standing that’s been hard to build and it can prove incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to resurrect that reputation. Research undertaken by the Consumer Forum shows that people are three times more likely to share a poor customer experience than a good one. There are two main factors when it comes to a professional finish; the first being the skill and care that is applied to each project, the other being the quality of the products that are used. Installers of the Liniar range of windows, doors and conservatories already work with the highest quality products on the market – but now a brand new range of Liniar Approved colour matched foam trims and installation products have been launched to enable them to provide a perfect finish every time. The foam trims are produced in-house by Liniar from 100% lead-free PVCu foam, and foiled using the same superior woodgrain effect coloured foils as the rest of the products in the Liniar range. TonyBasile,Liniar’s Business Development Director, explains further: “Liniar installation products have been carefully selected for window installers, builders and contractors to offer a superb, fully matching finish- and they perfectly complement the range of Liniar windows, doors, bi-folds, patios and conservatory roofs. Liniar trims are flat, rather than concave, to give a much more attractive finish. “The trims, architraves and angles are also covered with the same 10-year guarantee as Liniar’s windows, doors and roofs, offering consumers a single point of warranty for their installation. “The feedback so far has been that our list prices, especially for items such as silicone sealants, are extremely competitive – so there’s really no need for Liniar window fitters to go anywhere else. “The next time an installer collects windows, doors or conservatory products from their Liniar fabricator, they’ll also be able to purchase everything they need from the range of Liniar Approved installation supplies. “We’re even offering Liniar fabricators a fully- branded, fully stocked lockable display cupboard for their trade counters, making it simple for them to get started.” Everything in the Liniar Approved range has been carefully selected and given the Liniar stamp of approval to ensure a perfect finish – so make sure you protect your well-deserved reputation for quality by finishing your installations with Liniar products. That’s why a light-hearted ‘Gun Amnesty’ at FIT Show 2016 will urge visitors to lay down their silicone guns and walk away… with a roll of clean, efficient TruFit® sealing tape in exchange from Edgetech, a Quanex company. Tests show that using sealing tape cuts heat loss by almost a quarter, against windows sealed using a silicone gun. It’s also proven to be up to 20 percent faster to use - making window fitting quicker, cleaner and neater, as well as saving money. Live demonstrations at the show will allow installers to experience the benefits of working with TruFit. Pre-compressed expanding foam edge tape provides an effective thermal barrier for window and door installation. This ensures true energy rating performance and a long-life weather seal. Thermal imaging analysis has shown how much heat can be lost at the edge of windows installed using traditional methods. When the same windows were fitted using TruFit sealing tape, an average of 23 percent less heat was lost. Because it works by expanding to seal all spaces between the frame and wall effectively, the risk of gaps due to poor application is eliminated. Draughts caused by cold spots are minimised, one of the best ways of creating a feeling of comfort in the home. Edgetech’s Director of Sales and Marketing Alan Fielder says: “Our tongue-in-cheek ‘Gun Amnesty’ allows installers to replace their messy, inefficient silicone gun with a clean, effective alternative, a roll of TruFit … no questions asked!” Installers can drop their silicone guns in the ‘Gun Amnesty’ bin on Edgetech’s stand number 336 in Hall 3 at the FIT Show 2016, which takes place at the International Centre, Telford, from 12-14 April. www.edgetechig.co.uk
  • 30. Guardian Roof Launches New Seal of Professional Production Quality for Manufacturers G uardian Roof has launched a new industry- leading seal of production quality and excellence guarantee. From September, Guardian manufacturers will be awarded the status of ‘Professional Production Facility’which guarantees excellence in production of the Guardian Warm Roof System. Better still, it offers complete production peace of mind for Team Guardian installers-the UK’s largest network of solid roof system installers. For Guardian Joe Kearney said: “We believe this is the most rigorous seal of manufacturing quality our industry has ever seen. It covers every element of production, delivery and support to help manufacturers maintain the standards for which Guardian is renowned. Our new standard takes our entire supply chain to a new level and includes a comprehensive audit system to ensure that all manufactured roofs are consistent right across the country. “But it goes further than that. The pioneering guarantee of excellence means our Team Guardian installers know they can count on any Guardian manufacturer quality. Not only do we guarantee that the product will be exactly as requested and described to exact building standards; but we also pack, label and supply all components specifically for ease of each installation.” The seal of excellence also formalises the famous Guardian Roof pre-build: Before every Guardian roof leaves the manufacturing facility, it is built to completion prior to despatch. Then, every single component is carefully labelled and packed for ease of installation when on site. Guardian Warm Roofs leave each manufacturing facility ready for installation, including all fixings and insulations.Guardian even offers full technical support and on-site assistance with new installers first installation. Last month, Guardian Roof celebrated selling over 15,000 roofs throughout the UK In just 10 years. In September last year Guardian Roof launched a new membership drive targeting a total of 400 accredited installers by 2016. Joe Kearney added: “Our Team Guardian membership drive is going from strength to strength. And we expect more installers to join the team thanks to the peace of mind our new Professional Production Facility status and excellence guarantee will bring. “In just ten years, we have built partnerships with hundreds of installers and some of the UK’s finest fabricators. Their support for our unique business model and hard work is now paying off in massive success for the brand. “We remain hugely grateful to each and every one of our skilled fabricators and our incredible network of skilled Team Guardian Installers. • 32. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv32 GLAZING Fabricator & Installer T wo years ago, Jo and Andy Thompson were living in social housing at Unity Gardens, Long Sutton, Lincolnshire-one of the UK’s first zero-carbon housing developments. They had resigned themselves to being lifelong renters, having no spare cash for a deposit; buying or even building their own home was a pipe dream. “We would watch TV programmes like Grand Designs, but they were utterly depressing because everyone had such big budgets,” says Andy. Then one day, the dream of owning their own home became more of a reality. “Jo’s mother moved into a semi-detached house in South Lincolnshire and was sitting outside one day wondering how she would look after the huge garden as she got older.” In June 2012, Jo and Andy did some sums and took the plunge by offering to buy some of the garden to build their own house. Jo comments: “My mum was overjoyed when we offered to buy the land – it was her chance to help us and at the same time, our chance to help her too.” Eco friendly “When it came to looking at house designs, we were inspired by the development that we used to live in, which was eco-friendly with no utility bills - and nice and simple. We employed the help of local Architect Dr Jerry Harrall (www. drharrall.com) a multi award winning designer of eco- friendly developments.” Jerry, a Chartered Architect, developer and independent researcher, qualified in 1995 and has accumulated fourteen years of first-hand experience designing, building, living, working in and monitoring naturally heated, naturally ventilated buildings. He has now to his credit designed 14 buildings that hold UK’s highest Energy Performance Certificates, as well as the seven lowest air pressure tests on record. The Thompsons’ previous home, Unity Gardens, is an award-winning development created and designed by Jerry, comprising six carbon negative single-storey dwellings in Lincolnshire. The development was the first near- autonomous housing scheme of its kind and has achieved a Code for Sustainable Homes Rating of Level 4. “Once Jerry had designed our new home, which we’d named ‘FranklyBee’, he submitted the plans – keeping it simple to avoid any hold ups. We then sorted the finance, applying for a self-build mortgage,” continues Andy. Jerry reflects on the Planning process: “The first challenge came after submitting the plans to South Holland District Council. The planners required a consensus as to whether to support the application, due to the building being classed as ‘modern architecture.’ Luckily, however, the same local authority’s Building Control team had a completely opposite approach and championed the designs from the onset. “The issues arose as they were focusing on what wasn’t in the building as opposed to what was. The house has no foundations, being simply built on a garage floor slab – and has no cavity walls, no plasterboard and no mechanical ventilation.” Liniar helps generate energy for eco-house project
  • 33. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv33 GLAZING Fabricator & Installer The Build It took 12 months from submitting the plans to beginning the build. Andy continues: “In March 2014, we moved into a caravan on-site and building began. “Due to the differences in the way the building was designed, trades-people had to take a new approach to the way they worked. Bricklayers, for example, weren’t required to lay bricks or leave cavities in the wall. “Our main objective was to build an eco-friendly home with no utility bills – exactly as we had been living in previously.” Jerry explains: “The weakest area of a house is traditionally the windows, as this is where most of the heat is lost. Most standard house builders will usually get U-values of around 1.7W/m2K - but the aim for FranklyBee was to get below 1.0W/m2K.” Jo says: “We hadn’t heard of Liniar windows before, but our architect recommended them as he had used them in previous projects. We did look at timber as an option, but we had seen it used in other developments where it had warped and had problems with the seals. So, as we wanted a large opening, we didn’t want to risk it. “We wouldn’t touch aluminum with a bargepole! It was just too expensive and not at all energy efficient. So really, we were set on having PVCu from the beginning. We found a local Liniar installer, Bob Mills, who could help us achieve our objectives.” Bob ordered windows with Liniar EnergyPlus six-chamber profile, plastic composite spacer bar, triple glazing and low emissivity film on the inside and outside to achieve a U-value of 0.8W/m2K. By using this combination, the heat loss from the house was reduced by 50%. The windows were installed on a layer of external insulation as opposed to the usual cavity, to further increase thermal efficiency. Modern living “FranklyBee represents modern living,” claims Andy, “and we’re delighted that the building is ‘Energy Positive’ by 40% - meaning that it generates 40% more energy that it uses. Putting that into numbers, our house generates around 5,000 kWh of energy a year, but we only use around 3,000 kWh. “Overall, the build went smoothly from start to finish. It was constructed exactly as it was designed, and best of all, we received our first energy ‘bill’ the other day – as we’d hoped, it was actually a cheque!” To find out more about Liniar go to: www.liniar.co.uk.

  • 38. Top of the caps The final touch to installing a PVCu conservatory is to fit top caps to hide the framework and provide an attractive finish. However, a big problem for most conservatory roof manufacturers is in the preparation of their PVCu single-walled top caps. Not only do they provide poor thermal efficiency, but due to their flimsy construction they often bend and splay when cut - making it practically impossible to perform a neat and accurate mitre and leaving the fitter with ill-fitting parts to make the best of. One way around this is to opt for aluminium top caps as they are rigid and therefore easier to cut – however, they can bring their own problems - not only do they not have the thermal benefits of PVCu, they are more expensive. In addition, they are heavier to handle, scratch easily and are difficult to fit. Also, the gasket has to be added to aluminium top caps manually, costing valuable man hours during the production process. Best of both worlds Designed to clip on effortlessly, Liniar’s twin-walled top caps encapsulate the best of both worlds. They are strong and durable, making them easy to cut, and the design of the EnergyPlus roof top caps means a Liniar conservatory is one of the most energy efficient on the market. Because we are so proud of our product, and confident in its strength, we put it through a series of tests to see exactly how it would fare in comparison to a single-walled equivalent. The results were conclusive, although no surprise to us. As part of the tests, a sample of both profiles was squeezed, twisted, stood upon, sat on and even driven over by a car.The twin-walled top cap proved to be astoundingly strong while the single-walled samples left much to be desired – just take a look at the photos! Magnificent mitres Compound cuts to jack rafters are a joy with a consistent, professional-looking scribe every time.A secure, reliable one-position location waves goodbye to excessive and uneven leg-splay. Mitred corners fit seamlessly, giving the roof a beautiful finish. Available with an unparalleled range of foiled finishes, twin-walled top caps aren’t the only benefit to buying a Liniar conservatory roof. Liniar’s precision factory-fitted woodgrain foils give the authentic appearance of timber without the maintenance. And, unlike other conservatories, end caps and glazing retainers are also foiled, ensuring the whole installation matches for a stunning effect. Bespoke designs Each Liniar roof is designed on a bespoke basis to your exact specifications and delivered to site with all the parts you’ll need – and with colours available from stock, Liniar’s lead times are usually lower than other roof suppliers. While the landscape and the climate may be continents apart, the challenge was a great taster for the team, covering some 65 miles and scaling heights of 1640 feet. The ride was officially started by Former World Champion Yvonne McGregor MBE, Cycling Manager on the Border2Border Cycling Challenge, and B2B team members taking part included Matthew Glover, Darren Lloyd,Andrew Glover,Mike James,Alan Sadler and Nigel Barrett. The ‘West Yorkshire Windows’team line up was completed by, James Elston and Andy Ibberson. Gary Morton comments:“Taking place over 11 days next June, spanning 2,016 miles between Vancouver, Canada and Tijuana,Mexico, offering up 92,295 feet of climbing and temperatures in excess of 40 degrees, the GMF B2B ride is being described as the ‘Toughest Yet’ for good reason. Without the necessary advanced training there is no way even an experienced cyclist would survive the B2B challenge. That’s why the 18 strong riding team are already starting a regime of planned training of the 2,500 miles target prior to the ride, including 75,000 feet climbing and at least fifteen, 70 plus mile rides over the next 12 months. “Riders commented that this Dark Peak challenge really proved how essential this training is as many of the days on B2B are far tougher. It was the first of many such training weekends with more to follow including Wales, Mallorca & the Peak District.” Look out for links to meet the full team via social media in the coming weeks. • 48. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv48 GLAZING Doors VBH GOES JIGLESS WITH ROTO DESIGNO 2 Hardware specialist VBH has added NT Designo 2 to its range. Designo 2 is the latest concealed hinge ‘Tilt before Turn’ tilt and turn hardware system from the respected German manufacturer Roto-Frank, and replaces the NT R, or Royal, system. Most of VBH’s customers who have been using Royal have now upgraded to Designo 2 and VBH reports that the transition has been smooth. This has been helped by the fact that the main differ- ences between the two systems are in the top and bottom hinge components. All the main ‘locking’ components are unaffected by the change so dis- ruption to fabricators has been kept to an absolute minimum. Designo 2’s hinges carry a sash weight of 100Kg as standard, but this can be upgraded to 150Kg if the optional load transfer device is fitted. Another feature of the system is that the profile related hinges self locate into the frame corners without the need to pre-drill fixing holes or support pin holes with a drilling jig or template. Designo 2 has been present in its original turn first form in Germany for some years and has met with approval from German fabricators and installers. Now that it is available in the ‘Tilt before Turn’ for- mat peculiar to the UK and Irish markets, it arrives as a tried and tested product. VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says ‘Our Roto customers have been very happy to upgrade to Designo 2 as the changes to their stock holding is minimal and they can see some genuine advan- tages. The fitting procedure is largely unchanged with the main difference being a faster, jigless, fitting method for the hinges. The hinges them- selves are small but immensely strong. This is a plus point for specifiers and building designers as large and heavy windows can be built with Designo 2. This gives them more scope when specifying glazing sizes, and triple glazing in par- ticular.’ More on Roto Designo 2 and VBH’s other products can be requested via www.vbhgb.com or by calling direct on 01634 263300. www.vbhgb.com

  • 52. Part Q: Do all doors make the cut? Dear Editor, Amends to Approved Document Q are now in force and it has been interesting to see how the industry has responded in the run up to October 1st. This past week in particular has provided a flurry of activity from hardware manufacturers, testing and certification companies, industry bodies and of course, composite door suppliers. We have all seen Solidor’s video which demonstrates its door passing the more demanding PAS 24 cut tests, but what we have also seen is a lack of commotion concerning the role played by the door glass. That this seems to be flying under the radar is particularly surprising - you wouldn’t lock your car and leave the windows open, likewise it is common sense for what is potentially the most vulnerable part of the door to be protected. As demonstrated by Solidor’s powerful video*, an intruder could break into an unsecured slab in a minute and a half, so just imagine how quickly they could break through unsecured glass. The facts: The amended Document Q states that all doors and windows for use in new build projects must be “manufactured to a design that has been shown by test to meet the security requirements of British Standards publication PAS 24:2012.” Under PAS24:2012 “any glazing which, if broken would allow someone to insert their hand and release the locking device on the inside of the door should be a minimum of class P1A in accordance with BS EN 356:2000. Double- or triple-glazed units need to incorporate only one pane of class- P1A glass.” To achieve a P1A classification, this glass needs to be at least 6.8mm laminated, not toughened. Our Decorative Door Products (DDP) division has been offering 6.8mm as an option on laminates since August 2013, covering both our Signature imported units and those manufactured in-house at our Hawick facility. As an integral part of the supply chain, it’s important for us to understand the changing legislation to ensure we are ahead of the game in providing the correct specification of units to our customers.I wonder if every door glass provider can say the same. FIT’S A CERT FOR DOORCO IN 2016 O ne visitor in every five converted into a sale …ten new accounts within days – it’s little wonder that DOORCO was quick to book a return to the FIT Show in 2016. “With that kind of success from the first two shows, there was never any doubt we’ll back next year,” said MD Dan Sullivan. “We went to the first event to showcase our major new venture into prepped composite door slabs,as well as our new in-house painting facility, and by the end of the show 20% of all our visitors had signed up to the range. “At the second show, we launched three new door designs, as well as our new brand identity. We opened ten new customer accounts immediately after – every one of them from people we had met at the show.” He continued: “Both of these were important developments for DOORCO, especially the move into prepped slabs which was a very major diversification for us, and we’re pleased to say both FIT Shows delivered the results we needed. They played a real part in the success of these products as well as the company’s growth overall. “At FIT 2016, we will not only be featuring a number of product innovations but also new customer service initiatives and we are looking for the same kind of results the third time around.” www.door-co.com October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv | 54 Doors

E ndurance Doors from Rocal have just launched their new Classical Collection, as part of their ever expanding range of solid and secure composite doors, which now boasts 16 colours and woodgrains inside or out, along with 11 different frame colours. This exciting Classical Collection of door styles, which includes the new Wentwood and Walton designs, has been inspired by traditional timber door designs and those of the Victorian and Georgian eras. Rocal was one of the founding companies in the solid core composite door market back in 2002 and the re- launch of the Endurance brand at the back end of 2014 reflects the new face of the business, as it looks to cement its position as a major player in the composite door market. Given the nature of these new door designs, Endurance Doors expects that consumers will look to choose the Winkhaus AV2 Heritage automatic, multi-point locking system rather than a handle to the exterior and there’s also the opportunity to upgrade to the key less AV2-B battery operated and AV2-E electronic multi-point lock. Strong colours such as rich red and racing green are expected to be popular, along with Chartwell Green, Pearl Grey and Rosewood. In 2015 alone there have been 16 new door designs launched including these latest period inspired Wentwood and Walton doors, along with the introduction of Walnut and Pearl Grey as new finishes for both the door slab and the standard REHAU door frames. Both the REHAU TOTAL70S and TOTAL70C 5-chambered door frames are now available across the Endurance Solid and Secure composite door range. Stephen Nadin, managing director of Rocal Group commented: ‘Over the last 12 months we’ve generated considerable momentum in the business and the Classical Collection will help further fuel this success. We’ve got bold growth plans now in place and a strategy to make the Endurance brand totally synonymous with product quality, innovation and excellent customer service in solid and secure composite doors.’ For further information on the Endurance Solid and Secure composite door range for complete door sets or for slab only manufacturing, please log on to www.endurancedoors.co.uk, e-mail sales@endurancedoors.co.uk or call the sales office on 01652 659259. The composite door and PVC-U door panel manufacturer has added the Liniar white profile to the dedicated outer-frame options for its Phoenix County Collection composite doors. This new addition complements the existing choices of Duraflex outer- frames in Warm White or Brilliant White, plus the 70mm Eurocell composite door outer-frame system specifically designed to work with a 44mm width door leaf. Woodgrain foil finishes are also available for most of the three outer-frames currently being offered by Phoenix. For customers wanting to add a splash of colour surrounding their new entrance doors, Phoenix can alsoofferfoiledouter-framescoated in a wide range of RAL shades to suit particular requirements. High- quality finishes are created at Phoenix Doors’ in-house spraying facility, which opened in early 2015. “Adding Liniar to our range gives us a great offering to the marketplace and provides extra flexibility for customers who can supply our door with the same outer-frame profiles as their windows. This eliminates any colour-match issues, for example when butting up sidelights and top lights,” commented Haydon Statham, Phoenix Doors’ Sales Director. “Being able to colour-match with even more windows makes economic sense and keeps the job cost-effective. • 62. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv62 GLAZING Doors P hoenix Doors, part of MASCO UK Window Group, says demand for its double-rebated composite door range has risen in recent months due to increased awareness among fabricators and installers for a high-end product from a dependable manufacturer. “Since the successful launch of Meridian, our new high- performance 70mm double-rebated composite door, in the summer we have been amazed at the uptake from customers wanting a high quality product with reliable delivery and, crucially, from a sustainable supplier,” comments Haydon Statham, Phoenix Doors’ Sales Director. He points out that their newest, premium addition to an already comprehensive composite door range represents a ‘significant widening of choice in the competitive composite door market’. “It appears that double-rebated doors are the way forward; we’ve been surprised at how many people are seeking this twin rebate concept that helps to open up the ‘door to new opportunities’ alongside our traditional 44mm composite door offering,” continues Haydon. Phoenix, a long-established Cambridgeshire-based composite door and door panel manufacturer, can supply Meridian in ten days from receipt of order to delivery anywhere in the UK. Manufactured to achieve Secured by Design as standard, the innovative Meridian door with triple weatherseals and 50mm triple-glazing delivers outstanding weather, energy and acoustic performance. Haydon adds: “Ultimately,a range of factors are driving the popularity of this unique and high end product, which is not a ‘one-size fits all’ door. Just as importantly, window companies need to have confidence in a manufacturer that can deliver every time; we have the capacity to do this and welcome new enquiries.” For more information, please call Becky at Phoenix Doors on 01487 740469, email info@ phoenixdoorpanels.co.uk or visit the website at: www.phoenixdoorpanels.co.uk. George Clarke has agreed to continue his work with IG Doors to promote their Truedor brand for another year following the success of their initial partnership. The TV personality so well known to so many will continue his role as an ambassador for Truedor and will play an even bigger part in the marketing efforts in the coming 12 months. Sales and Marketing Manager for the Truedor brand Richard Kirman confirmed the news and announced that the company is “absolutely delighted that George has agreed to continue working with IG Doors”. “From our point of view the relationship with him has been an outstanding success; but we know he is very passionate about brand integrity, and so him agreeing to work with us again tells us that we have done things the right way and achieved everything we set out to do over the last 12 months”. “He is a great ambassador for us; he understands what a composite door does to a building, and the guidance and thinking he has given to us have been outstanding. His summary of the different building types in the UK and his understanding of the types of doors which best suit them has been a real asset for us and has become a great selling point”. “He has great credibility with the home owners – he is very much a trusted name, and our installers feel very comfortable selling a product endorsed by him. He is not a celebrity endorsement for the sake of it; he is a ‘celebrity’ who has great credibility for the type of product we sell and the nature of where those products are installed”. Commenting on his decision to sign up with Truedor for a further 12 months George commented “I am really pleased to continue my work with the team at Truedor. When I visited their factory last year I realised the precision, the care, and the skill that they put into every door, and that they understood what was important to me in terms of the right products being complementary to the right property type”. “My background is buildings, and their understanding of the subject was a real breath of fresh air–they really get the importance of offering the right products to homeowners of different property types”. “This year is going to be really exciting for us all; they have great new products coming out yet again and I am delighted that they are so keen to continue our relationship – it shows true commitment to what they believe in and I am delighted to be alongside them once again”. Getting FIT for the Show Truedor will once again be at the FIT Show (12th-14th April 2016 at Telford International Centre) and as well as showing their latest door styles and colours they will also be showing their tailored support packages for all types of installer groups. It is one of the many outstanding features of the Truedor offering that their support packages are purposely bespoke to the needs of the installer – whether working from a van or a showroom, buying from a trade counter or installing into new-build or social housing – all underpinned by an outstanding product range and great service.

  • 66. Revolutionary AutoLock Launched by John Fredericks F or John Fredericks, launching a dynamic, new security product on today’s market takes more than a simple evaluation of current industry products and then making improvements on what already exists. Revolutionising a sector takes time, patience and a commitment to innovation that will provide a unique solution, which combines superior quality and lasting guarantees. As such, the R&D department at John Fredericks has taken this responsibility very seriously with the launch of a new, fully patented product that will revolutionise door security across the UK and Europe. When looking at tomorrow’s secure door market the companyconsidered it vitallyimportant to consider today’s issues with an eye on future market direction and end user requirements. Consequently, the new Autolock was created which provides the ultimate in security and functionality. For the last 18 months, technicians and senior management at the company have been working closely with the MACO team in Austria and the UK, and subsequently have introduced the proven, patented door locking solution for domestic and commercial applications. This device is available exclusively from John Fredericks and can be adapted for a broad range of applications including domestic properties, schools, commercial premises and properties with high security specifications. Currently it is estimated that 70% of consumers do not use the multi-point locking facility now fitted to most pvc-u doors, leaving people vulnerable to break-insandthedoorsusceptibletomisalignment. With this in mind, the Research and Development team evaluated the needs of all types of consumers during the design and development stages of the new Autolock product. In particular, this new system now provides specific technical advantages for the elderly and vulnerable, which was an essential part of the product development according to Managing Director, Steve Darkins. The unique capabilities of the Autolock maximises security via IS. cams and hookbolt combinations that are PAS24 tested. On closing the door, all locking points are automatically triggered without any need to activate the lever handle, and a turn of the key deadlocks the door. This also prevents the door from bowing as the locking points are always engaged when the door is closed. Subsequently, the configuration of the device completely eliminates warping, twisting and air leaks thanks to meticulous Austrian design from the MACO engineers. The distinctive features of this proven device provide a unique ten point locking system that automatically secures the door via the MACO ‘Silent Latch’ function. This ensures easy to use doors with latch compression and a flexible adjustment on the lock side. The Autolock is available only from John Fredericks and will be introduced initially as a standard fitting on all new composite doors and other single doors in the company’s range from 1st December 2015, with the idea of developing this further and rolling it out into a double door solution early in 2016. Recognised as an industry leader in relation to thermally efficient, innovative, pvc-u windows and doors, the company also supplies purpose-driven locking devices and a wide range of exceptional solutions for the building sector. Kevin Whiting, Managing Director of MACO UK, long term partners with John Fredericks Plastics, a division of A&B Glass Group, commented: ‘’MACO understood the detailed findings by the research |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv66 GLAZING Doors
  • 67. carried out by John Fredericks Plastics in regards to specifically targeting the problem of consumers not properly locking their doors , whilst at the same time still enabling the elderly and less able to operate them easily. John Fredericks Plastics commissioned our Research and Development teams in the UK and Austria to fulfil this need, we in turn developed a smooth operating, highly secure automatic door lock with absolute minimal force required to lock it. Simply push the door closed and a turn of the key it’s locked.’’ When A&B Glass Group approached MACO some 18 months ago to develop the project MACO were driven to ensure that their in-depth knowledge of the industry was paramount to the door locks’final design and build, the design and engineering is a truly revolutionary solution not just for today but also the future of the door locking industry as a whole. The system is extremely versatile and can be configured for all styles of single doors including composite doors. Ensuring customers can offer innovative design options that will provide matchless security and exceptional quality has been a priority for management at both John Fredericks and MACO. Steve Darkins, Managing Director at John Fredericks comments, “The new Autolock has been meticulously designed alongside the MACO development team, with the specific purpose of bringing a lock to the market that excels in terms of performance and security standards. We are driven to satisfy the emerging lock needs of an ever changing market and believe that the Autolock will deliver the perfect combination of optimum security and easy use. The John Fredericks brand has an established pedigree for excellence, leading the market in terms of performance guarantees and security features and this new system is a testament to our progressive approach to innovation and customer support.” www.johnfredericks.co.uk
  • 68. |October 2015 | www.mytrade.tv68 GLAZING Windows SHEERFRAME & CMS TARGET FUEL POVERTY ERADICATION H igh performance PVCu windows designed and installed to the right standard, supplemented with draught proof doors and external wall insulation (EWI), represent the most powerful weapon that social landlords have in the fight against stubborn fuel poverty. That was the message from UK PVCu systems company Sheerframe, and window, door and curtain walling fabricator and installer CMS Window Systems,at the latest seminar in the CMS Technical Masterclass Programme. Held recently at the company’s state of the art educational facility, the Innovation Hub, the seminar was attended by more than 25 housing specifiers and managers from local authorities and housing associations across Scotland. According to David Strang, Sheerframe’s Key Accounts Director, who presented the seminar, the absence of a joined up strategy to meet the demand for new homes, coupled with the impracticality of controlling UK energy prices, means improving the building fabric of our social housing is the obvious way to help those most at risk from fuel poverty. “The Scottish Government pledged to eradicate fuel poverty by 2016, but with only a few months left before that deadline it seems we’re a long way from where we are supposed to be. So we must keep up the drive for better quality building fabric, particularly in social housing, to reduce the need for heating in the poorest households and allow tenants to save money. “Up to 67% of household heat loss is through the windows, doors and walls – so upgrading using today’s proven, thermally superior window and door technology is as high a priority as boiler and central heating replacement.” Sheerframe window systems are used by CMS to manufacture all its PVCu windows. The thermal performance of these windows is optimised thanks to the design of the multi-chambered Sheerframe 8000 profile which is reinforced using Thermlock FP.This is a structural PVC foam fixing reinforcement made from 100% lead, barium and cadmium free PVC, which eliminates the need for poorly insulating metal reinforcements–it also makes windows 15% lighter so less demanding for installers. David adds: “Installing triple glazed Zero Carbon windows and doors with 0.8 W/m2K U values are increasingly seen as effective solutions to reducing fuel poverty.” The Sheerframe seminar was the third in the Technical Masterclass Programme organised by CMS as part of its support for clients, designed to help them improve the quality and energy efficiency of their housing stock. Previous seminars have helped specifiers gain best practice insights into hardware and security, with expertise provided by Yale and Securistyle, and the latest advanced glazing options thanks to technical guidance from GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain. The next seminar will take place in November in conjunction with Rockwool, with technical insights into external wall insulation (EWI) on the agenda.
