ith Christmas on all our
minds at the moment, the
MyTradeTV team will be
once again holding a Charity Day with a
difference for children who are unable to
celebrate with their families at home.
On 14th December 2015, Managing
Director, Lee Clarke and the team
visited Pinderfields children’s hospital
to sprinkle a little Christmas spirit over
those families who will be affected by
illness and hospitalisation over the
festive period.
The whole team and the majority of
MyTradeTV customers have pulled
together to provide a little something
special that will help to lift the spirits of
the children and their families.
Customers have responded extremely
positively to the MyTradeTV request
and have contributed generously to the
Christmas Charity fund. Consequently,
the team has purchased, wrapped and will
deliver individual Christmas presents to
Pinderfields children’s hospitals.
A new, purpose-built Children’s Ward at
Pinderfields Hospital in mid Yorkshire,
which caters for burns, inpatient surgery
and Children’s therapy, was visited by
the MyTradeTV team.
As a devoted family man, Lee was
inspired to develop a Charity Day with a
difference, where children could benefit
from the generosity of others.
Lee comments, “I made a pledge to do
this when I first set up the company.
The whole idea was extremely important
to all of us here at MyTradeTV as we all
have children or young family members
of varying ages. Also, at some time
or another, we all have to face some
serious medical issues. When those
affect our children it is horrendous and
a little support, however small, can mean
everything to parents, particularly at this
time of year.
As most of us look forward to sharing a
special time with family at Christmas,
the idea that we can physically bring a
little happiness and optimism to others
who will be less fortunate was very
important to all of us. We just want to
help and hopefully raise a few smiles.”
Once again a big thank you to all our
customers that helped deliver these
presents.

GUARDIAN ROOF UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE,
VIDEO AND MOBILE APP FOR 2016
G
uardian Roof has
unveiled three new
digital innovations for
2016 to transform the online
experience for customers and
Guardian Registered Installer
Scheme members.
Thehattrickofnewdigitalassets
feature a new mobile app; a new
website; and a digital animated
video that reveals the secret
installation process behind the
UK’s leading warm roof supplier
for the first time.
The website includes new
functionality and content
including the 3D-model
animated video that takes
the viewer on the complete
installation journey from the
removal and recycling of the
old conservatory roof; through
the patented precision fitting
process to the final fitting of the
LABC-approved Guardian Warm
Roof.
In addition, the Guardian Roof
mobile app is a new exclusive
benefit for Team Guardian
registered installers focusses
on slashing administration
workload and improving the
customer experience.
The app is also designed to
simplify processes for field
teams and roofing managers
wherever they might be.
It has built in functionality,
especially for reps that visit
establishedclientsonarecurring
basis, to perform customer
service and field management
functions. And it has all been
designed thanks to feedback
from Team Guardian members
of all sizes.
For Guardian Roof, Ross Darcy
said:
“Ever since we launched Team
Guardian we have listened
to our customers needs and
our members’ commercial
challenges - whatever they may
be. I think that the website and
video will offer a leap forward
in people’s understanding of
our Warm Roof technology. It’s
about complete transparency
for customers, and giving our
installers the tools they need to
answer any questions that arise.
“This app is another step
forward in demonstrating how
we can use the latest technology
to make life simpler for our
registered installers. Times
are changing. And I think that
some fabricators and installers
who fail to keep pace with new
technology risk getting left
behind. I remember the bad
old days when it was all faxes,
random emails and back-of-a-
fag-packet cost calculations.
You just can’t get away with that
any more.
“The app is our latest
improvement to bring
everything together. And We
expect our customers along the
whole of the product life cycle to
experience tangible benefits too.
And our new digital advances
for 2016 represent more
exciting improvements in the
Guardian Warm Roof customer
experience.”
Earlier this year Guardian Roof
unveiled new sales software for
members of its Team Guardian
Registered Installer Scheme
later this month.
The new software improved
Team Guardian installers’
efficiency and conversion rates;
plus help increase capacity for
Team Guardian fabricators.
Developed exclusively for
Guardian Roof by RoofWright,
the software can produce an
infinite number of designs using
over 200 unique templates and
five Metro tile designs.
The software also focuses on
customer experience and new
commercial benefits. It enables
11. Team Guardian installers’ associated retailers to
engage customers directly in the design process
using virtually-rendered real-time graphics.
And the software offers massive time savings;
allows for instant precise pricing of jobs; and,
features structural checks to guarantee the
integrity of each job. Further process time savings
are predicted to transform fabrication capacity.
Last year Guardian Roof launched a new Team
Guardian membership drive targeting a total of
200 accredited installers.
In less than four years, Team Guardian has already
established a network of 23 fabricators and over
150 team guardian installers throughout the UK.
A Guardian Warm Roof is best installed by a
registered Team Guardian installer. The scheme
is designed to allow home-owners verify Team
Guardian Registered Installers, and prevent
competitors falsely claiming to supply the
patented roof system.
In addition to the right to install Guardian Roof
and access the new software, Team Guardian
Registered Installers enjoy additional exclusive
benefits including full training; sales models;
official Team Guardian ID’s and lanyards;
promotion on the Guardian Warm Roof website;
and crucially, leads from a local fabricator.
More information about Team Guardian is
available by calling 0800 0665832 or visiting here.
The new Guardian Warm Roof app will be available
on IOS and Android.

12. HAFFNER RELEASES VIDEO DEMONSTRATING
CREDENTIALS OF TT405 COMPUTERISED SAW
H
affner Murat’s TT405 computerised saw has
revolutionised countless fabricators’ process-
es thanks to its long list of valuable features.
But Dave Thomas, Haffner Murat’s Managing Director,
says: “It can be difficult to understand just how much
the machine can bring to a business just by reading
product sheets or looking at photos. It’s only when you
see the machine working you can get the full picture.
It’s why we’ve commissioned a video so that people
can see for themselves.”
The video shows the TT405 in action, drawing viewer’s
attention to key features such as the capability to cut
two standard 70mm profiles in one operation, improv-
ing output and efficiency and the saw’s ability to pivot
inwards, enabling point-to-point cutting of the out-
side of the door and windows and increasing accuracy.
The TT405 computerised saw is suitable for both PVCu
and aluminium profiles. It has 450mm saw blades and
a 4.2 metre cut capacity, with additional cutting length
up to 7.2 metres available. It has pneumatic horizontal
and vertical clamps to securely fix the profile in posi-
tion and automatic guarding to protect the operator.
Cutting arrow heads make transoms easier, while the
PLC offers functions such as saw head pivoting, single
head operation, cleat cutting facility, small cut opera-
tion and an automatic transom stop facility. The small-
est cut using the automatic mode is as little as 165mm
at 90 degrees and 270mm at 45 degrees, with smaller
cuts available manually, making it tremendously ver-
satile and waste is kept to a minimum thanks to the
profile waste optimisation facility.
The TT405 has top quality pneumatics, bearings and
computer systems to ensure a long and trouble-free
life and further reassurance is available in Haffner
Murat’s two year no quibble parts and labour warranty,
which comes as standard.
The Haffner Murat team has always been passionate
about two things: how window fabrication machin-
ery can improve productivity and quality and reduce
overheads in a business. And making sure a business
invests in the right machinery to meets its needs. This
new video demonstrates both passions perfectly.
The TT405 computerised saw video is available to view
at www.haffnermurat.com and on YouTube.

EDGETECH WINS
CUSTOMER CARE
INITIATIVE AT G15S
W
inning the coveted G15 for Customer
Care Initiative has rounded off an
impressive 2015 awards haul for
Edgetech UK, a Quanex company. Four of the
Edgetech team collected the award from top
comedian Jason Manford at the prestigious
ceremony at the Hilton on Park Lane. Edgetech
won for its Dealership Plus comprehensive
support package.
“Customer Care Initiative is the best award we
could win because it recognises our commitment
to customers,” says Alan Fielder, Director of Sales
and Marketing at Edgetech. “We don’t act like
an average component supplier and the winning
entry for Dealership Plus is a great example of
that.
“The scheme is there to support customers,
wherever they are in the supply chain. The amount
of additional compliance and legislation has been
huge over the past few years. So what we’ve done is
create a system that keeps everything in one place
to make it as simple as possible for customers. It
gives them access to the experts they need, and it
will keep them up to date with any changes. We
are especially pleased how well it’s going down
with customers already.
“G15 organiser Tony Higgin told the 600-strong
audience at evening dinner that the competition
was highly contested this year, so it’s even more
of an achievement to win. It was a brilliant night,
Jason Manford was an excellent host and it’s
always fantastic to see so many of the great and
good supporting the successes of the industry.”
2015 has been an exceptional award-winning year
for Edgetech. As well as the G15 award, Edgetech
has won Manufacturing Innovation from Made
in the Midlands; Manufacturing from Coventry
Telegraph Business Awards; and a Best Business
Award.
Alan Fielder collected the G15 trophy. He was
joined on stage by Managing Director Andy
Jones, Marketing Manager Charlotte Davies and
Marketing Assistant Krishma Patel.

THE VEKA UK
GROUP WINS
BUSINESS
EFFICIENCY
AWARD
I
ndustry-leading PVC-U systems supplier, The
VEKA UK Group, has been presented with a
prestigious regional business award at the
EEF/Aldermore Future Manufacturing Awards.
The Burnley-based company won the Business
Efficiency Award, having been singled out as the
‘manufacturer that has most successfully brought
in new operating practices to boost productivity
and business performance’.
The VEKA UK Group was selected by a panel of
judges drawn from business leaders, industry
experts and academics and was up against stiff
competition from across the region.
With the regional title now under its belt, The
VEKA UK Group will go on to compete for the
national title at an awards gala dinner in London
in January.
Dave Jones, Managing Director of The VEKA UK
Group, said: “This award recognises our team’s
hard work and dedication, especially in relation to
our on-site mixing plant. This facility is the most
technically-advanced mixing plant in the UK
and it has been designed with future expansion
in mind. It has a potential capacity of 72,000
tonnes and means that we are able to offer a truly
scalable service. We can grow indefinitely as our
loyal customer base continues to expand, and
mixing our own raw materials on site means we
have even greater control over the quality of our
products.
“Our investment in the the mixing plant will
enable TheVEKA UK Group to become even bigger
and stronger over the coming years, and allows us
to offer even higher levels of service and stability
for our customers.
“We are delighted to have won the Business
Efficiency Award. Not only do these awards
showcase the valuable contribution made by
local manufacturers like ourselves, but it also
clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to
increasing efficiency in all areas of our business.
“It’s great news for us to share with all our staff,
customers and suppliers. We were very happy to
have got this far and now we’re looking forward
to the national finals in January to see how we
measure up against other leading manufacturers
from across the UK.”

THE GREAT
GATSBY
PROVIDES
THE SCENE
FOR THE FIT
SHOW GALA
DINNER
W
ith F Scott Fitzger-
ald’s literary mas-
terpiece The Great
Gatsby described as exploring
‘themes of decadence, ideal-
ism, resistance to change, social
upheaval, and excess…’ some
might believe the book could
provide the perfect theme for an
event staged for the British glass
and glazing industry. And that is
just what the organisers of The
FIT Show thought when they set
the scene for next year’s Gala
Dinner, which takes place on the
middle evening of the show at
the Telford venue.
The sold out, packed full-house
of 900 revelers will party to a
backdrop of the Roaring Twen-
ties and just as then partying
hard and dancing will be the key
pursuits of the evening. Unlike
the prohibition that party-goers
so skillfully worked their way
around at that time alcohol will
be readily available at the Gala
Dinner but a host of other cul-
tural cues will give the event a
high society, glamorous feel and
the ultimate in luxury will be
the theme throughout.
Guests will believe they have
travelled back in time says Nick-
ie West, Event Director for The
FIT Show: “The Great Gatsby is
the theme for the whole even-
ing, from when guests enter the
party until they leave. “It will
apply to everything although we
want everyone to be surprised
and wow’d so we are not going
to reveal too much beforehand.
Just come dressed for the even-
ing and ready for a great night
out!”
The Fabricator Installer Trade
(FIT) Show takes place at The

12th, 13th 14th April 2016. Al-
though the Gala Dinner is sold

FIT SHOW EXHIBITORS WILL NOW HAVE AN EXTRA INCENTIVE TO IMPRESS:
INTRODUCING THE FIT SHOW AWARDS 2016
M
ore than 170 companies will be
exhibiting at The FIT Show in April 2016
and it will be one of the most intensive
marketing activities most of them will undertake
in that year. So with that in mind the organisers of
The FIT Show believe it is only right to encourage
exhibitors of all sizes to set the bar even higher
and then to recognise and promote the very best
efforts made for their stands, and also for their
marketing and promotion campaigns in the run up
to The FIT Show.
Thus The FIT Show Awards have been created,
with six categories that will seek out the very best
efforts of exhibitors taking part in The FIT Show
and the months preceding the event. The honours
will be bestowed upon the winners at the Gala
Dinner, which takes place on the middle evening
(Wednesday) of the event.
The FIT Show Awards are open to all companies
exhibiting at The FIT Show 2016 no matter what
size stand. The idea is to encourage creativity,
innovation, professionalism and sheer hard work.
It isn’t about budget either – some of the best ideas
come from the heart and soul.
Winning one or more of The FIT Show Awards
will demonstrate in real terms the marketing
capabilities of that exhibitor; everyone loves a
winner and the accolades will be bestowed for
excelling at the highest profile and best-known
event in the window, door, conservatory and glass
industry!
How it works
There are six categories for exhibitors to enter

media as well as the designs and performance...

VISITOR REGISTRATION GOES LIVE ON FIT SHOW WEBSITE:
Skip The Queues By Registering Now!
A
dvanced visitor registration for The Fabricator
Installer Trade (FIT) Show, already confirmed
as the biggest trade event for the window, door,
conservatory and glass industries for at least a decade,
is now live on the FIT Show website.
Registering early brings benefits to visitors through
regular updates that allow advanced planning for the
event. Of these perhaps the most important will be the
ability to skip past the queues straight into the halls
with a simple swipe of a personalised badge. Only pre-
registered visitors will receive their entry badge in
advance.
A ‘Save the Date’ button automatically generates a
calendar entry in users’ diaries. A further convenience
will be the advanced information about exhibitors
and products that pre-registered visitors will receive
in addition to information such as details of the FIT
for Business seminar programme and Master Fitter
Challenge. As the event approaches helpful notes about
parking and access for example, will all serve to make a
visit to The FIT Show easier and more rewarding.
More than 170 exhibitors, the most yet at The FIT Show,
will occupy four halls at The International Centre,
Telford on the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2016. With a
gap of almost two years since the last event hundreds
of new products and services are being exhibited for the
first time with many being launched at The FIT Show. It
is known that the event will be used to launch a number
of brand new window systems, in addition to the largest
number of trade fabricators and machinery suppliers to
appear at any UK trade show for the industry for at least
ten years.
“This show really reflects the tremendous, positive
attitude that prevails in the market amongst
manufacturers currently,” explained Paul Godwin,
managing director of FIT Events, which organises The
FIT Show. “We understand that there will be a number
of brand new window systems launched in addition
to hundreds of other new products. Most of these will
be seen for the first time anywhere. In a market as
competitive as the UK home improvement sector, a day
or two at The FIT Show will bring visitors right up to
date with the latest products and services available to
sharpen their competitive edge.”
The Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show takes place
at The International Centre Telford on 12th, 13th 14th
April 2016. General information on The FIT Show can

I
n an unprecedented year of business awards
for extended living space experts, Prefix
Systems, the company has now added the
National Fenestration Awards for Conservatory
Roof Fabricator 2015 to their expanded portfolio of
trophies.
In what is an independent forum, the National

across all areas of the UK fenestration industry.
Founded in 2013, in response from social media
demand, the NFA’s aim to recognise the very best
people and companies by means of an open voting
system, requiring users to simply register and vote.
With 42% of the vote, it’s clear that many people
voted for Prefix Systems in recognition of them as
a diligent and professional business. This makes
it five awards in the year in total including and
unprecedented hat-trick in the Red Rose Awards
for Lancashire businesses and commerce and The
Newcomer Award in the first ever Hive Blackburn
and Darwen Business Awards
Chris Baron and Chris Cooke, co-directors of Prefix
Systems commented: ‘We’ve had an unprecedented
year in terms of both sales and for business awards
and achieving the NFA’s by means of an open vote is
humbling. We’re driven in the pursuit of customer
care and in the way in which we have developed
our own engineered solutions such as our revered

FRAMEXPRESS ADDS SECURITY &
STYLE IN CAERNARFON
P
roperty personalisation
has become big business
for frameXpress
customers as the discerning
eye of the consumer dictates
market direction. The sales
team believes that this is down
to more dynamic concepts and
thermal efficiency which are
now more readily available to
them.
Karen Gardner, Sales Manager
at frameXpress has seen many
market trends develop during
her 16 years working at the
company. Currently, she
believes there is huge potential
regarding products that offer the
highest thermal performance,
whilst colour foils are giving
consumers many more design
options, all of which is inspiring
them to invest.
On this particular renovation
project in the Caernarfon area
of Wales, frameXpress was
contracted to supply all windows
and doors with stipulations
given regarding security, energy
efficiency and overall aesthetics.
The homeowners opted for a
light oak foil finish in FS70 mm
system for all windows and
doors in order to complement
the existing look of the property.
A combination of casement
windows as well as top hung sash
windows were manufactured
to ensure a cottage appearance
was maintained. Additionally,
a composite door from the
frameXpress range was
manufactured in a light oak foil
finish to harmonize with the
other products installed.
Karen comments, “Quality,
choice, service and stability
are the foundations on which
frameXpress has been built and
this is demonstrated with sales
increasing and more dynamic
design becoming very popular.
The credibility and reputation
of the company is highlighted
on this project as bespoke
design was a crucial part of the
contract.”
FrameXpress is recognised as
a leading supplier of windows,
doors and conservatories with
pvc-u and aluminium options
available. Triple glazing, solar
controlled roof glass and a
broad range are leading to very
positive figures as 2015 draws to
a close.

40. From powder to profile
Eddy Webb,Works Manager at HL
Plastics, explains the process of
how powder is transformed into
profile…
Starting at the silos
“Unlike many of our competitors,
Liniar lead-free PVCu window
profile is fully manufactured in
Britain.The process of extrusion
begins with the delivery of resin to
our silos. We have eight in total, four
of which are for the delivery of the
raw ingredients that are used in the
mixing plant to produce our dry
blend.
“The resin passes through the
mixing plant and four other
materials are added. It’s then
transported into the four
‘production silos’ ready to be
transferred to the extrusion lines in
the factory.
Mixing it up
“Our mixing plant is one of the
biggest in Europe and has been
custom-built to cope with the
demands of production and we
only use the highest quality,
lead-free raw materials.
“Those ingredients are transferred
from the silos and smaller
additive stations to a holding
hopper where they are weighed
before being added to a heater
mixer.
“A temperature of 120°C is
applied to blend all of the
ingredients together and then
dropped into the cooler mixer
where the temperature will be
brought back down to 40°C before
being transferred into bags or a
silo.
Extrusion solutions
“Each of our silos has the facility to
connect to any of our 32
extrusion lines, enabling us to
accommodate for any possible
requirement and maximise
productivity.
“The powder is transported by
vacuum from one of the silos
outside into a hopper, which
controls the rate of flow to the feed
port of the extruder barrel.
The Liniar brand is synonymous with innovation and quality, with a range
of windows, doors and conservatories designed and manufactured by HL
Plastics at a state-of-the-art extrusion facility in the heart of the UK.
But what exactly is extrusion?
41. “The purpose of an extruder is to
melt, mix and pump the plastics
material to the die at a steady rate
and constant temperature using
a screw; very much like a kitchen
mincer with a screw inside a barrel
and a feed chamber, or hopper, on
top.
“The screw is rotated by a
motor and the plastics material
is heated as the screw conveys it
along the barrel to the die, which
determines the shape of the
product.The die, which can be
quite complex in design, is simply
a shaped opening through which
the plasticised material, or melt, is
pushed.
“When the screw is rotated the
material is carried along and
compressed.The friction created
generates heat which converts the
solids into a ‘plasticised’ or semi
molten state, mixing the
material in the process.
“The melt, or extrudate, is pumped
out of the die at 192°C and then
formed in a water-cooled
calibrator by vacuum, before
being cooled in water baths
containing tank plates.
Keeping cool
“It’s worth mentioning that when
the new HL Plastics factory
building was designed, one of the
key requirements was to keep the
water for the extrusion process
controlled in a facility where it
could be easily looked after. For
that reason our water pits are
located underneath the factory.
“We felt that this was vital for
operational reasons.There are no
pipes or utilities on show, making
for a safer and neater working
environment, and any required
service and maintenance can be
carried out without affecting
production. Being able to carry out
work underground means that the
installation of new machinery lines
is much simpler.
“We have three separate
water pits which provides added
resilance to production should
a problem occur.Also, because
these pits were built underneath
the factory, it stops pests being
able to contaminate the water and
prevents any freezing during the
winter months.
“Water purification and filtration
systems have been introduced to
assist with the process and the
water is dosed with chemicals
to keep it clean and prevent the
growth of any bacteria.
Fantastic gasket
“The co-extrusion process takes
place further down the line.This
is where Liniar’s patented flexible
‘bubble’ gasket is added to the
rigid profile using a separate
co-extruder.
“The gasket is bonded onto the
profile using pressure and heat, so
the seals don’t have to be added
at the fabrication stage. Once
adhered to the profile, it proceeds
through a cooling vacuum tank.
“The extrusion process is a
continuous one, so a constant
pulling of the profile is necessary
to maintain shape, accuracy and
dimensions. Once it passes through
the haul-off section, protective tape
is applied before the profile is cut to
length on a saw unit.
Quality assured
“We place the utmost value in the
excellence of our facilities and the
products we manufacture - our
factory has achieved BS EN ISO
9001:2008 accreditation to meet
British Standards for a quality
management system.
“The quality control department is
essential to inspect the condition of
the profiles that are produced;
Liniar profiles are examined 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
“Every hour an operator will
perform a dimensional, functional
and colour check on the profile,
while every four hours a shadow
graph is used.
“A section of profile is cut and
placed on a magnifying lens to
project the shape on to a diagram
so that dimension, shape and
parallelism can be assessed to be
certain of perfection.
Out of the factory
“Once the profile has been
produced, wrapped and packed,
it’s moved to a holding area where
it’s checked to ensure that the
quantities and component names
are correct.
“If the profiles are due to be foiled,
they are sent to our in-house foiling
plant, where Liniar’s high quality
coloured woodgrain foils are fitted
using the latest high-tech
machinery.
“If not, they are picked up and
taken over to the warehouse, then
checked again before being
added to stock. Our S.A.P. system
records each movement within the
operation, helping us to keep track
of all products.
Delivering the best
“Our warehouse contains stock of
all the different Liniar products.
Customer orders are picked here
and then packed into stillages to
be loaded onto one of our fleet of
lorries. Once ready, they’re
delivered to our nationwide
network of fabricator customers to
be transformed into beautiful
windows, doors and
conservatories.”

NETWORK VEKA INSTALLERS
ATTAIN BSI KITEMARK™
T
wo installer members of Network VEKA
are proud to have achieved the coveted BSI
Kitemark™ for window and door installation,
giving them an additional, powerful tool to illustrate
their high standards.
Cornwall’s Rodda and Hocking, and Bury St Edmunds-
based Frames Conservatories Direct are two of the
first companies to take advantage of Network VEKA’s
professional relationship with BSI.
Earlier this year, Network VEKA’s MD John Ogilvie
announced a pioneering partnership with BSI, the
business standards company, for window installers.
Network VEKA members that wish to further enhance
their offering to homeowners by achieving the BSI
Kitemark, can now do as there is little additional site
auditing time required for the BSI Kitemark, following
the normal Network VEKA assessment visit (thanks
to the many shared objectives in the organisations’
auditing processes).
John commented: “Many of the requirements of the
BSI Kitemark are closely aligned with Network VEKA’s
existing procedures. Therefore, only a few additional
elements need adding to our current auditing process
to consider companies for the BSI Kitemark too, giving
them the unique means to gain a nationally recognised
mark of quality in a comparatively timely and cost-
effective manner.”
An independent 2010 survey* showed that 72% of
consumers trust the BSI Kitemark and believe it shows
a reputable company.
Bob Kerr, Rodda and Hocking Owner, said this
‘recognisability’ played a big part in the company
choosing to apply for the Kitemark: “The BSI Kitemark
is an internationally recognised symbol that stands
for quality, safety and trust. For our company to be
accepted and recognised as giving world-class service
to our customers is very satisfying and makes everyone
at Rodda and Hocking very proud.
“We’re always looking for ways to demonstrate clearly
to customers that we uphold fantastic standards of
quality, service and installation. By displaying the BSI
Kitemark, a recognised symbol of trust alongside the
Network VEKA logo, customers can have even greater
confidence in their window and door installations.”
“We have also, this year, achieved the Which
organisation’s ‘Trusted Trader’ approval which just
adds to the confidence that we want to give to our
customers.”
Adrian Lewis, MD of Frames Conservatories Direct,
agrees.“The Kitemark has been around for so long that
people have become very familiar with it in all sorts of
different contexts and different industries - where it
always denotes quality and exceptional service.
“It’s a valuable tool in our sales arsenal as it offers yet
another way to prove our commitment to quality.
“When our customers invest in improving their homes
with replacement windows or doors, the BSI Kitemark
gives them independent assurance that they are
buying quality products which will be fitted to a high
standard.”

GGF TAKES POSITIVES FROM
CHANCELLOR’S SPENDING REVIEW
The Glass and Glazing Federation took some
positives from Chancellor George Osborne’s a
“mixed” Spending Review and Autumn Statement
announcement last week.
NigelRees,GGFGroupChiefExecutivecommented,
“Though it was pleasing to see the Chancellor
address the critical issues of new housing,
construction growth and apprenticeships, there
were some areas where he could have offered a bit
more encouragement for our industry. The energy
efficiency challenge in the UK’s housing stock still
needs addressing and we were hoping for some
alternative to the failed Green Deal scheme.”
Giles Willson, GGF Managing Director added,
“From the Chancellor’s statement, it appears that
improvingenergyefficiencyindomesticproperties
is low on the Government’s agenda, however It
was interesting to see that the Government are
to consult on the rate of VAT on energy saving
products with a view to aligning all such products
under EU legislation. We will continue to lobby
that energy efficient doors and windows should
be at the reduced 5% rate of VAT and hope that
they are included in any future changes.”
A summary of Spending Review announcements
that will impact on the construction industry are
listed below.
• A doubling in the housing budget from 2018/19
(to more than £20 billion of gross capital
investment over the next 5 years) to deliver
at least 400,000 affordable homes including
200,000 Starter Homes, 135,000 new Help to
Buy Shared Ownership homes and 10,000 Rent
to Buy homes
• The replacement of ECO from April 2017 with
“a new cheaper domestic energy efficiency
supplier obligation” which will run for 5 years.
The new scheme will upgrade the energy
efficiency of over 200,000 homes per year,
saving those homes up to £30 off their annual
energy bill, tackling the root cause of fuel
poverty and delivering on the government’s
commitment to help 1 million more homes
this Parliament.
• The government will provide £295 million
over 5 years to improve the energy efficiency
of schools, hospitals and other public sector
buildings
47. • Over £300 million of funding for up to 200
heat networks will generate enough heat to
support the equivalent of over 400,000 homes
and leverage up to £2 billion of private capital
investment
• A new London Help to Buy with a special 40%
equity loan
• The government is committed to releasing
surplus assets to drive economic growth and
release land for housing
• The extending of the doubling of small
business rate relief (SBRR) in England for 12
months to April 2017
• Bringing forward further reforms to the
planning system, including establishing a new
delivery test on local authorities, to ensure
delivery against the number of homes set out
in Local Plans.
• Amending planning policy to support small
sites,extendingthe£1billionBuilders’Finance
Fund to 2020-21, and halving the length of the
planning guarantee for minor developments
• The apprenticeship levy, which comes in from
April 2017 at the rate at 0.5% of an employer’s
paybill
• A new employer-led body to set apprenticeship
standards and ensure quality
• The government will consult on legislation for
Finance Bill 2016 to ensure the reduced rate of
VAT on energy saving materials is maintained
in line with EU law

to promote best installation practice. Glass unit toe
and heeling and WarmCore’s straightforward glazing
method using handy push-fit beads with integral
gaskets is also clearly demonstrated.
For industry professionals in a bit of a hurry, there
is an alternative “stop-motion” version of the video
on YouTube which presents the whole bi-door
replacement process in less than 40 seconds to an
up-tempo music soundtrack.
“We hope this friendly and accessible video will
help to inform installation professionals and also
build confidence with consumers,” comments
Synseal’s Head of Marketing, Mark Schlotel. “As the
WarmCore door is installed, homeowners will get
to see the funky orange thermal core which is the
signature motif of this innovative product, however
once the bi-fold door is fully installed the distinctly
different-looking orange core will have disappeared
completely from view. This no-nonsense video helps
to illustrate how this appealing and value-adding
product has been designed to be easy to fit, with a
minimum of fuss.”

51. DARTS CHAMPION ‘SEES THE POINT’
OF A MERIDIAN COMPOSITE DOOR
D
arts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has
‘seen the point’ of a top-quality entrance
door by choosing the high-performance
70mm double-rebated Meridian Composite Door
from Phoenix Doors, part of MASCO UK Window
Group.
Supplied in a black finish with chrome hardware,
the new door was installed at the 16-time World
Champion’s home in Stoke-on-Trent by locally-
based Supercraft Conservatories Windows as part
of a wider home improvement project.
Supercraft Managing Director Fab Mogadam said
that although his client’s existing front door was
only about five years old, he wanted to upgrade
it for the greater privacy, superior security and
thermal-efficiency provided by the Secured by
Design-accredited Meridian product.
Within a week of taking delivery, so pleased was
Phil that he has ordered a second Meridian to
replace his PVC back door.
Fab commented: “Since we started offering the
Meridian range, it has generated much interest.
People are very positive about its innovative
attributes, such as triple weatherseals and 50mm
triple-glazing.
“Phil is absolutely delighted with his smart new
door, he’s over the moon about it” continued Fab.
“His old door had too much glass for his liking, so
the four smaller panes in the new one are more
to his taste. Having seen the quality of his front
door, he’s ordered another Meridian as he can’t
live with his ‘basic’ PVC back door now!”
The two men have been friends for many years and
Fab has carried out work on Phil’s various homes
over the last 25 years, including most recently
new PVC-U windows and a large orangery.
Phoenix Doors Sales Director Haydon Statham
added: “As the newest, premium addition to our
range, the Meridian Door is attracting attention
for its ability to deliver outstanding weather,
energy and acoustic performance.
“We’reverypleasedthatPhilishappywithhisdoor
and look forward to supplying him with another
one. His decision to order a second Meridian very
much confirms we’re doing something right!”

WILSON WINDOWS SWAPS SUPPLIER OF 26
YEARS FOR THE BENEFITS OF THE VEKA UK GROUP
L
oughborough-based installer Wilson
Windows has recently switched supplier to
The VEKA UK Group after 26 years with its
previous systems company.
Dale Wilson, Director at the family-run firm
commented: “It’s the best decision we’ve ever
made!”
The company, which was established in 1984
by Dale’s father Michael, is now co-directed by
husband-and-wife team Dale and Karen Wilson,
with their son Callum having joined recently too.
“ItwasKarenthatsuggestedweextendouroffering
with a new window option”, Dale explains.“There
are numerous companies within our target area
that were stocking the same systems as us. We
wanted to differentiate ourselves and widen our
audience in the process.
“Over time, we’d become disillusioned with
our previous supplier. The support promised in
their promotional materials never seemed to
materialise; when systems changed, no training
was provided; and if issues arose as a result, they
did everything possible to distance themselves.
“I have a contact at Glazerite – who now fabricate
our windows – who invited us to view some VEKA
systems, and we’ve not looked back since! There’s
a better product range than with our previous
supplier, and that’s already been reflected in an
increased uptake since we made the move. At the
moment we’re booking in jobs for three month’s
time – a great start to our relationship with VEKA.
We couldn’t be happier!”
Besides its innovative and versatile product
range, The VEKA UK Group is also renowned for
its industry-leading packages of installer support,
boasting both the Approved Installer Scheme and
Network VEKA – the first UK organisation of its
kind.
“When Karen Lund travelled down to speak to
us about Network VEKA, I have to admit, I was
slightly dubious about how ‘real’ the benefits
69. could be. It was just before the annual Network
VEKA Awards, so Karen invited us along to meet
the member companies and hear what they had
to say.
“I’m so glad we signed up. Network VEKA delivers
where rival offerings from our previous supplier
fell flat. The marketing support is brilliant for
awareness – we’re even about to install some
of the Steve Davis liveries onto our vans, which
is a great conversation starter if nothing else!
Customers love the deposit protection,insurance-
backed guarantees and other incentives and, to be
honest, it just ‘feels’ better to sell as a Network
VEKA member. We know the standard of our
work is great and, with the Network behind us,
customers have that confidence too.
“We’ve been better rewarded in the short time
we’ve been with VEKA than in 26 years of loyalty
to our previous supplier. Where we previously
were made to feel ‘honoured’ to stock a supplier’s
products, we now feel valued and supported – I
only wish we’d made the move sooner.
“Last year was our 30th anniversary. This year
marks the start of a new era for Wilson Windows
with The VEKA UK Group alongside us. We’re
extending our showroom and hope to showcase
the changes at a Christmas open day. And, with
Network VEKA’s assurance that we will remain
their only accredited installer in our area, we look
forward to our increased work flow continuing!”

71. MAINTAIN TOP PERFORMING WINDOWS WITH RENOVATE
T
he chances are that windows fitted more
than three years ago won’t have the energy
performance they did when they were first
installed. But these aren’t windows that need
replacing and until now, there was nothing installation
companies could offer customers to help. Now
Edgetech UK, the leading voice for energy efficient
glazing, has launched Renovate by TruShield® to bring
old windows back to life.
Renovate is a glass cleaning system combined with a
protective layer of TruShield glass protection. It comes
in a handy pack that contains everything needed to
treat four standard domestic windows that includes
cloths and protective gloves. It’s a clever two-step
process. The specially developed pre-cleaner removes
dirt build-up before TruShield is applied to protect the
glass. The protective effect is activated immediately
with the surface becoming hydrophobic.
“The rationale behind Renovate is simple,” says
Charlotte Davies, Marketing Manager at Edgetech.
“With91percentofwindowsintheUKalreadyreplaced
we could see a need for protecting the performance of
those windows. Dirt on the glass can reduce the energy
efficiency of windows and Renovate is designed to
preserve the performance of the glazing.
“Wehaveputtogetheracompletepackageofmarketing
materials for installation companies to offer Renovate
to their window customers,” adds Charlotte. “With
DVDs, drop cards, mailers and homeowner leaflets
Edgetech has made it easy for customers to generate
leads with the launch of Renovate by TruShield.
“It gives installation companies a reason to go back to
their existing customers and offer them the very latest
technology in maintaining the energy performance
of their windows. And while Renovate is designed as
a retrofit product, there’s no reason why companies
can’t offer it at the time of new installations.”

73. THINKS
OUTSIDE THE
BOX SASH
W
hen Southern Housing Group needed a
unique fenestration solution, they turned to
a southern Halo fabricator: Masterframe.
Based in Essex, Masterframe specialises in PVC-U sash
windows and has a reputation for exceptional quality
and attention to detail. This led to the company being
contacted by Southern Housing Group, who wanted to
restore their property - the Amhurst Park Estate - and
recapture its original character.
Managing Director of Masterframe Windows Alan
Burgess explains: “our client, Southern Housing Group
wanted to restore their building to its former glory, and
improve the property for residents who could then, once
again, take pride in their home.
“The brief was somewhat of a challenge, but we knew we
were up to the task - thanks to our specialist skills and
the high quality of the Halo profile we use.
“The new windows needed to be energy efficient and
approved by planners, while also paying homage to the
character of the building by authentically replicating the
look of the original timber sash windows. The high spec,
Halo PVC-U systems that we use allow us to combine
the traditional aesthetics of a timber window with the
many benefits of this modern material. Unlike wood,
PVC-U won’t crack, well, rot or warp and will never
need repainting. It offers low maintenance and energy-
efficient performance.
“As a Halo customer, we are also able to benefit from
The VEKA UK Group’s Variations foil range which
means we can specify woodgrains that are virtually
indistinguishable from real timber.
“Although some sash window manufacturers make single
windows and then couple them together, Masterframe
has always offered the windows on one continuous cill.
“These coupled frames result in a mullion in excess
of 140mm wide (225mm if you include the sashes) but
the existing timber frames of this project had mullions
of around 100mm. This dimension would need to be
achieved if the new windows were to perfectly resemble
the old.
“In order to create a slimmer mullion section, we
approached a specialist supplier in Europe who was able
to create a prototype butt-jointed mullion which would
also provide enough adherence for the woodgrain foil.
The butt joint of this mullion, makes the overall finish
even more timber-like.
“We’re very proud of this innovative solution, which
worked out even better than we anticipated. It was ideal
for this project and we received some extremely positive
feedback from the client.
“We’ve found that the authentic look of this new
system, combined with our fantastic PVC-U sashes, has
advantages above and beyond this particular installation.
It’s perfect for historic homes and heritage properties,
where the original character needs to be maintained.
We’ve gone on to use this integral mullion for numerous
other customers who have been most complimentary
about the result. We’re very proud of the new design and
we’re looking forward to sharing this innovation with
more of our customers in the year ahead. We will be
showcasing it at The FIT Show, and it will be available to
VEKA customers, and Network VEKA members, thank to
our status as a Network VEKA affiliate partner.”

Q
uickslide has celebrated the start of 2016
in style by introducing a 70mm casement
window system and new colour options
as standard. This upgrade will ensure Quickslide’s
customers can continue to enjoy the latest products,
and will also provide a perfect match to the Yorkshire

Quickslide’s sales and marketing director, Tom
Swallow, said: “We pride ourselves not only on
our products but our quality of service, part of
which is listening to what our customers want. The
introduction of the 70mm system is a response to
feedback from our partners who told us that they
love our Vertical Slider, but wanted a better looking,
more suitable system for their casements.
“To coincide with the launch of the new system,
we’ve also introduced a range of new wood-grain
finishes as standard across both the casement and
Vertical Slider range,” continued Tom. “These will
include popular options such as Chartwell green
and anthracite grey, as well as a new version of our
current Quickslide cream, which is lighter and more
popular within the industry.”
With its own in-house state-of-the-art painting

enhances the appeal of Quickslide’s innovative
Vertical Slider and enables customers to choose
their VS or casement windows in any colour they
want.
Coming with a number of other impressive optional
features such as run-through or plant-on sash

its showroom and portfolio of premium products
by introducing Apeer’s range of pioneering Lumi
frameless windows and bi-folding patio and
residential doors.
Managing Director of Athena Windows, Colm
O’Neill, says he was extremely impressed with
the superior quality of Apeer’s composite, bi-fold
and French doors when he visited the company’s
stand at the SelfBuild & Improve Your Home Show
in Belfast last year. It was an introduction that
ultimately led to the discovery of Apeer’s cutting

hugely excited about offering to his discerning

new system.
Lumi is a new range of contemporary frameless

internal styling of more traditional products. The

The growth forecast for 2015

growing area in 2016 with a 7%
growth; however the speedy
25% growth of infrastructure
shown this year is predicted to
fall by 5% in 2016.
For the Glass and Glazing sector
there would seem to be a positive
outlook as private housing
output is predicted to grow by
5% during 2016, although falls
of 10% have been suggested for
the public housing sector during
the year.
Withagenerallypositiveforecast
this will no doubt reflect on our
national fascination regarding
house prices, which are a main
stimulant in relation to the
consumer economy within the
UK. Constantly we try to second
guess the movement of the
property market, with detailed
analyses from one lender, broker
or sales agent or another, being
put in front of us to scrutinize
faster than we can blink.
It would seem once again that
the London area is forging ahead
according to many mortgage
companies and estate agents,
with the suggestion that the
annual increase in house prices
in the Capital will grow by 10.6%.
According to Nationwide, the
view is a little muddier as the
regions beyond London and
the South East slowed in the
third quarter, with the Midlands
and northern areas performing
much slower.
It would seem that the Land
Registry would be in agreement
with this as figures demonstrate
that property market growth has
continued to cool with house
prices up 4.2 % compared to 12
months ago. However the East
of England continues to see the
biggest annual growth, with
prices up 8.4 per cent compared
to 2014.
Rightmove has suggested that

million by 2020 if costs continue to escalate at the
current rate.
Yet how realistic are these figures? As the Land
Registry uses a repeat sales formula the monthly
index does not include properties that have not
sold at least twice since 1995. Equally, sales figures
are not included relating to new build homes or
those that have been in long-term ownership. Due
to a lack of properties on the market, currently,
vendors are seizing this opportunity to hike prices
up, with average asking prices currently having
risen to the biggest on record since September
2002.
Another area that will undoubtedly have an effect
on the glazing sector will be energy efficiency and
the reduction of carbon footprints, once again,
becoming a major topic for debate.
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Amber
Rudd has stated that she intends to prioritise
fuel costs with a view to keeping bills down for
consumers and businesses alike. Her commitment
to reducing emissions has been declared that it
will be ‘in the most cost-effective way’
She continues on to state:
“Our support has driven down the cost of
renewable energy significantly. As costs continue
to fall it becomes easier for parts of the renewables
industry to survive without subsidies. We’re taking
action to protect consumers, whilst protecting
existing investment”.
The solar industry has suggested a feasible rescue
bid for British solar with the recommended £1
solar rescue plan for 2019 being put forward as an
alternative to the Government’s proposed cuts to
adeLimited
the Feed-in Tariff for the technology.
It is hoped by the Solar Trade Association that
this will salvage the solar industry to provide a
viable solution for the solar market and enable it
to continue developing. It certainly will become
an increasingly important topic for debate over
the coming years.
Finally as we head towards the beginning another
Christmas and New Year, it has been interesting
andinspiringtoseethechanges,developmentsand
growth across the glass sector. The culmination
of a good business year has been celebrated by
the great and the good of the industry and the
richly deserved crowning glories of Accolades
and Awards, via the G Awards and the National
Fenestration Awards. Many congratulations to
everyone involved.
As the business year comes to a close, the entire
MyTradeTV team would like to celebrate the spirit
of the season by wishing wish you a very Happy
Christmas and much continued success for 2016.

and when you visit one of the
stores it’s easy to see why. Quite
simply, the overall experience is
second to none.
Giving customers what they want
is something that’s central to
Managing Director Geoff Foster’s
vision for the company, which is
why the customer experience is so
important to him.“Our customers
are busy people and our aim is
to make their lives easier. To do
that, two things are vital: stock
availability and staff knowledge.”
When it comes to stock, National
Plastics is renowned for its range,
which includes fascia boards,
soffits,trims,internalandexternal
cladding, guttering, drainage
systems, carports and canopies,
windows, doors, conservatories,
EPDM rubber roofing and much
more. What’s perhaps less well
known is how much of that stock
is always available. “We aim to
keep 99% of our stocked items
readily available at any one
time,” says Geoff. “The last thing
a customer wants to hear when
he’s made a special trip to see us
is that an item won’t be in stock
until later on in the week.We keep
the number of times that happens
to an absolute minimum.”
What’s also noticeable about
a visit to National Plastics is
how ‘on the ball’ the staff are.
“Our staff are genuine product
experts,” says Geoff. “It means
our customers can trust them
to answer any questions, make
informed suggestions and offer
useful advice whenever it’s
needed. Whether it’s a regular
customer from a big company or
a one-off visit from a one man
band, our staff will always want to
help as much as they can.”
It is clear that National Plastics’
approach of making customers’
lives easier is proving very
successful. The company has
added £9 million to its turnover
in recent years and plans to take
its total number of stores to 50 by
the end of end of 2017.
