The teacher believes in a student-centered approach where students are equal partners in the learning process. Their role is to ensure students have the necessary resources to answer their own questions.
They mix up their teaching methods based on the material, using different approaches like discussions, images, or putting authors in conversation. While providing variety, they also believe in concise lessons that leave students with concrete understanding rather than overstimulation.
As an online instructor, they facilitate rather than provide information. They create discussion questions and provide support while encouraging collaboration. Detailed assignments and samples provide guidance for students. They carefully read discussions and provide meta-analysis to analyze the group's work.

Developing a Philosophy of Teaching and Learning
Teacher Interview: Heather Cyra
Heather Cyra has been a teacher at Guild Gray Elementary School for four years. Approximately 600 students attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Guild Gray. The school is located between an older, well-established neighborhood and low-rent apartment complexes. Student enrollment fluctuates at the school, and teachers may be asked to change grade levels when populations at specific grade levels decrease or increase. Ms. Cyra began teaching first grade but after one year she was moved to fifth grade. For as long as she remembers, she wanted to be a teacher. She knew that there would be challenges and rewards in teaching, but teachers make a difference in the world. She wanted to be creative and use the natural skills she possesses for helping people learn.
What do you see when you see excellence in teaching?
I see someone who is organized and has created an enjoyable, engaging environment—teachers who keep the students engaged in learning and also help everyone learn. I see excellence in teaching when I see teachers who have “fun” with their students; teachers who listen to their students and keep the students from being bored. Excellence in teaching is also surprising the students with unexpected activities, rewards, or information.
How do you know when your students are learning?
There are many ways to know that students are learning. You can often tell just by the looks on their faces that show whether they are confused or enlightened. You can tell by verbal cues from how the students respond to the questions you ask or how they contribute to class discussions. You can tell from a written assessment or merely a show of hands. If they are not responding the way I expect them to then I realize I have to reteach a concept or go back over something that may not have been explained in a way that they can understand. If you are tuned in to your students it is quite easy to tell when students have checked out by the way they look at you or don’t and by the responses they give you.
What brings you joy in teaching?
When I see how far the students I started out with grow in a year. By keeping track of their stages of development, I can see how much they have learned and how their attitudes and behavior have developed. When my students tell me at the end of the year that they don’t want to leave, I know that I have created a warm, nurturing environment. I feel like I am doing something right. It’s not entirely about what the tests say. As long as they’re learning, showing growth, and enjoying themselves in school and have enjoyed their fifth-grade experience I am happy and feel like I have done my job.
How did you develop a personal philosophy of teaching?
I constructed my philosophy one course at a time through integration of the most prominent and influential pieces of knowledge from each professor and textbook. During the course in special education my ...

1. MY TEACHING PHILSOSOPHY AT THE ICT UNIVERSITY
My philosophy of teaching is based on a belief that learning needs to be student centered and
that students need to be equal partners in the learning process. My role involves using my
expertise to put the necessary resources in the hands of the students or more likely to be sure
that my students are well equipped to find and evaluate the resources they need to answer
their questions.
As a teacher, I believe in mixing up my teaching based on the material, rather than trying to fit
the material into the same pedagogical box. Some classes are better taught focused on a
discussion of a single quotation. Others work best by putting five or six authors in conversation
with one another. Others thrive when an image, or a series of images, is the focal point of the
conversation. In each class, at the very least, I try to engage students in a variety of ways, with
visuals, sounds, and words. However, I also believe that less can be more. Each class I lead has a
particular goal, and each discussion is the result of careful preparation. I don’t want my students
to leave class with their heads spinning from overstimulation. I want them to engage the material
at hand, and to leave each class with some concrete understanding. So I also try to end each class
with three minutes of summation. Sometimes I recap for the students and leave them with three
thoughts of the day. Other times, I ask them to take a moment and write down three things they
learned and one question they have.
Now that the majority of my teaching is in an online forum, I let students know that my role
in the online classroom is to be a facilitator, not a provider of information. I create multiple
discussion questions to keep the online discussion exciting and stimulating and to address the
multiple backgrounds and interests of my adult learners. I provide a good deal of rigor in my
undergraduate classes, but am right there to support them as they seek their answers and to
encourage them to work together to get the most out of their learning. I always provide
detailed descriptions of writing assignments and I provide samples so that they are able to see
what a good finished product should look like. My students often wonder at first "where I am"
in that I am not actively "running" a discussion. Instead I am carefully reading, correcting
errors when I see them, and then working to analyze what the group has said from a meta- -
perspective. I share my analysis with the class as we end each module.
I chose an academic career because I want to develop new knowledge through research, as
well as contribute to my field and society by training top-rate students. There appears to be no
single perfect method for teaching, and an important aspect of teaching seems to be
identifying the approach, which works best for a given individual. While I believe my
teaching has been successful, I also recognize that I have much to learn from my colleagues
and students. I look forward to continuing teaching, research, and research training and
learning from my students and peers along the way.
