Description
Softwareengineersand designersresearch, design, evaluate, integrateand maintain softwareapplications,
technical environments, operating systems, embedded software, information warehousesand
telecommunicationssoftware. They areemployed in information technology consulting firms,
information technology research and development firms, and information technology unitsthroughout the
privateand public sectors, or they may beself-employed.
Main Responsibilities
Collect and document user'srequirementsand develop logical and physical specifications.
Research, evaluateand synthesizetechnical information to design, develop and test computer-based
systems. Develop data, processand network modelsto optimizearchitectureand to evaluatethe
performanceand reliability of designs. Plan, design and co-ordinatethedevelopment, installation,
integration and operation of computer-based systems. Assess, test, troubleshoot, document, upgradeand
develop maintenanceproceduresfor operating systems, communicationsenvironmentsand applications
software. May lead and co-ordinateteamsof information systemsprofessionalsin thedevelopment of
softwareand integrated information systems, processcontrol softwareand other embedded software
control systems.

Employment Requirements
A bachelorsdegree, usually in computer science, computer systemsengineering, software
engineering or mathematics, or completion of acollegeprogram in computer scienceisusually required.
A mastersor doctoral degreein arelated disciplinemay berequired. Licensing by aprovincial or
territorial association of professional engineersisrequired to approveengineering drawingsand reports
and to practiceasaProfessional Engineer (P.Eng.). Engineersareeligiblefor registration following
graduation from an accredited educational program, threeor four yearsof supervised work experiencein
engineering and passing aprofessional practiceexamination. Experienceasacomputer programmer is
usually required.
