At AirPOS we love new and cutting edge technology. We’re not afraid to try new things as we believe that through trying things our competitors won’t, we can make software that they can’t. We love NoSQL and CouchDB, we build in long-established web technologies such as HTML5, Javascript, CSS3, Ruby on Rails and use the awesome Awesomeium to deliver these web technologies to the desktop, tablets and the web.
Small retailers are at a technology disadvantage. Larger stores have invested heavily in technology to help control their operations and to get to know what their customers want. Small retail is at danger of becoming a showroom for e-commerce. Small retailers have not been able to invest in technology on a large scale, until now. Cloud computing and software as a service a wide selection of powerful software for relatively small investment on the retailers behalf, leveliing the playing field and helping them to compete. In challenging times this software may even be crucial for survival.
A few years ago ePOS software for processing sales in stores costs thousands of pounds. Mostly this was down to the fact that it operated on touch screens, and touch screens were damn expensive back then! Now touch screens are almost the norm and a new generation of software vendors are using the cloud to deliver software direct into retail stores. No engineers, no expensive maintenance contract. As the costs of hosting become almost too small to meter, or too small to matter an almost instant return on investment is possible.
The one part of this new revolution of software that was has been lagging behind is in-store payments. Old thinking, old technology and old processes are rapidly being replaced in modern retail software, but payment has been the difficult one. Small retailers do not want to work with red tape, expensive integrations and out-moded thinking. Modern retail solutions deserve modern payment solutions…
Digital payment in Europe needed a big player to enter the market, someone with a mature infrastructure who understood that the simplicity of the solution was key to it’s success in the modern era. Thankfully PayPal and PayPal Here are the answer to the problem. PayPal is unique in the market in terms of maturity and brand awareness, and as it has always been a web company understands what software vendors like us are trying to achieve. It’s the last essential link in the chain that makes complete ‘out of the box’ retail platforms a reality. Retail will not only be freed from expensive siloed solutions, but it will become mobile too meaning sales and payments can be performed anywhere, by anyone.
And that’s that. A long debate ended. The only question left is now that we have the mobile payments solution we’ve been looking for, what comes next?
Freeing the data from the point of sale and teaming it with the data collected through mobile payment will give us a dataset that has never been seen before. Thousands of small retailers entering the cloud era will also give them, and us, business intelligence, trends, insights, metrics and more that will cause a shift in how they operate and service their customers. Through smart usage of this data it is possible to have a relationship with customers like never before, and to service them better than before. Great loyalty solutions for example are a must. No more stamp cards and pen and paper surveys! Also old school POS hardware has to go. We need apps on smartphones and tablets to replace all that stuff. There’s around 9 million legacy ePOS setups in Europe alone. The opportunity to disrupt this market is huge. Get on it!
