Students will learn about how humans impact coral reefs by using a virtual world called WhyReef to read about threats, create and test hypotheses in response to reef events, and analyze their results. They will then post their findings online and develop scientific inquiry skills while learning collaboration skills. The virtual reef environment provides an authentic learning experience that allows students to become self-directed learners. Access to Whyville will need to be arranged to allow students time in the computer lab during school.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 2. *Students will learn how ecosystems can be changed by humans and their actions. *Students will be introduced to the MUVE Whyville and WhyReef. *Students will read the six ways humans can impact coral reefs.
- 3. *Students will create and test hypothesis in response to reef-threatening events using the Reef Simulator in WhyReef- a virtual coral reef. *Students will analyze results and check their hypothesis. * Students will post their findings and what they learned in the forums page under the thread titled “Stadium Drives Coral Reef Investigation”
- 4. * Students will be developing knowledge of and the ability to use the tools, skills, and methods of scientific inquiry. * Students will be assessed through a variety of tools that are consistent, authentic, and fair. * Students will be able to apply what they have already learned and connect it to new learning outcomes.
- 6. * Students will learn collaboration skills as they discuss their hypothesizes and findings using an online journal. *Students are learning while solving authentic real-world problems and posting results for a global audience. *The WhyReef virtual world makes the content relevant to students and brings the coral reef into the classroom giving them an authentic learning experience. *Students become self-directed learners as they find their way around the virtual reef world.
- 7. * Students will need time set aside in the computer lab to use Whyville. *Students will need to be allowed to go on Whyville during school hours. Parent forms can be sent home to get permission. * Access to Whyville will need to be allowed by the administration.
