Music Video Budgets
Michael Jackson is often famed for his Music Videos.
They are renowned for the performances within them
(“Thriller”), Narratives (“Do You Remember The Time”),
Celebrity Cameos (“Another Part of Me”, which features
Princess Diana and Elizabeth Taylor) and also their
length ( for example the video for “Bad” is 18 minutes
long). Given this, it is easy to see why he holds the record
for the most expensive Music Video to date, spending
money on directors, elaborate costume, special effects
and taking a great deal of time to film his lengthy videos.
Why did it cost $7, 000, 000?
Price to create a Computer-generated spaceship: $65,000
Cost of buying and breaking so many guitars: $53,000
Morphing artworks: $50,000
Michael's makeup: $3,000
Janet's makeup: $8,000 a day
Choreography: $40,000
Giant video screen: $80,000
Lighting: $175,000
Cost per day: $636,000 (about 11 days)
Total cost of 11 sets: $5,000,000
Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson- Scream 1995
is the Most Expensive Music Video at $7, 000, 000!
The video for rapper, Azealia Banks debut single, 212…
• cost $30 to make
• was shot in black-and-white in one location.
• features her dancing in front of a brick wall, her hair in pigtails.
• There are close-up shots of her rapping into the camera.
• Unexpectedly the Video went viral with over 75 million views- proving
that good Music Videos do not need huge budgets and if music is good
it will be shared despite Music Videos
• "I was surprised! I remember being really insecure
about it because I didn't have my hair done. I was
really broke, and I felt I looked broke in the video so
no one was going to like it.”- Daily Telegraph Interview
Example of a Low Budget Music Video
• There aren’t many/any indie Music Videos in Wikipedia’s list of the most expensive
Music Videos
• Indie Music Videos are in fact notoriously low budget (or at least they were when
they genre was first born), as they tend to focus on the quality of the artists
performance and music rather than anything else.
• Many Videos of this genre depict artists performing live or at gigs/on tour and so
require very low budgets to film.
• For Example: “I bet that you look good on the dancefloor”, The Arctic Monkey’s first
hit was a filmed live performance and audio recording, shot in a small studio using
television camera’s from the 1970’s. The song, like Banks’ 212 proved to be an
internet sensation, making the band famous and topping the charts as a number
one single.- Again this video proves that low budget indie music videos (like mine
will be) can be successful despite funding.
• However the original Music Video for the song that I want to use, ‘My Number’ by
Foals, which provides a panoramic perspective of the band performing to a live
audience in combination with a narrative, is likely to have been of a higher cost
than ‘I bet that you look good on the dance floor”. This may be because it uses
trained dancers, has a heavy focus on editing and is not merely a film of a pre-
existing live performance.
Indie Music Videos
My Music Video
• As a student, I hope to keep my Music Video at as lower
budget as possible.
• My research in to the budgets of several popular Music
Videos has shown me that I can do this, without
compromising on the entertainment my video might
provide.
• I do recognise however, that I might have to spend money
on travelling to certain locations, and buying food/drink for
myself and my actors and I am able to do this.
• In order to save money, I will use my own props, my actors
own clothing as costume and they have agreed to work for
free.
• By keeping my budget low, I am helping my Music video to
conform to the Indie Genre.
