This document discusses Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos and how it relates to the artist Devlin. Some key points of Goodwin's theory are that visuals in music videos should relate to the lyrics, genres have common conventions, and men and women have distinct roles. The document then analyzes images from one of Devlin's music videos, finding that they adhere to aspects of Goodwin's theory through visuals that match lonely lyrics, close-ups of the artist, and portrayals of gender roles.
2. Andrew Goodwin’s Theory
Key features he believes distinguishes ‘music’;
• Relationships between visuals (music video’s) style e.g. differences in
video and music lyrics.
• Genre’s each have their own codes and conventions which are generally
followed.
• Different sex’s are clearly distinguished and have clear roles.
• Multiple close-ups of the artist.

How Andrew Goodwin’s Theory Relates to Devlin
I noticed that when researching the artist I believe has very similar codes and conventions to what I
would like my music video to end up like (Devlin) that several of Andrew Goodwin’s theories were
apparent throughout.
Picture 1 – At the start of the video Devlin is shown on his own with three block tower buildings behind
him which fits with Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the visuals relating to the music’s lyrics as he is on his
own looking like an outcast and the buildings behind represent a community.
Picture 2 – This image is one part of several shots which show Devlin close up, which yet again follow
one of Andrew Goodwin’s theories.
Picture 3 – This image is of a young woman with two children, which is a stereotype of
teenagers/youths. This particular part of the video fits with Andrew’s theory because he mentions that
sex’s are clearly distinguished between each other in music videos as having different roles and
purposes.
