Andrew Goodwin identified six elements that are commonly featured in music videos. These include demonstrating genre characteristics, showing relationships between lyrics and visuals as well as music and visuals, including close-ups of artists as demanded by record labels, referencing looking through screens and mirrors, and treating the female body in a voyeuristic way. Goodwin addressed these six steps in his book to bring them to the audience's attention and assist music video directors in creating music videos.
